Standing: Nelson Tonet, Louis Castello, Robert Graham, and Board Secretary William Roger. Missing from the picture are Max Siegel, so- licitor, and Robert Hazlett, Board president. Our Administration Behind every school there is a group of people who are responsible for keeping things running smoothly and efficiently. At West Deer this group is our administration and Board of Education. This year, Dr. Edgar J. Holtz, the new superintendent of schools, in- itiated many new concepts in curriculum of the school. Again, the guiding hands of Mr. Petrina and Mrs. Schuster, along with Mr. Marsili and .Mr. Angeloni of the Guidance De- partment were the effectual force leading us through another successful year at West Deer. Although the students at our school are con- tinually leaving to go out into the world or to seek higher forms of education, we are proud to say that these, our leaders, are an integral part of West Deer High. . ... . F --I , y , ,,,, ,,,, V ' James S. Marsili SENIOR HIGH GUIDANCE COUNSELOR Daniel A. Angeloni JUNIOR HIGH GUIDANCE COUNSELOR Faculty - - The Foundation of Our School The faculty of any school should be con- sidered as the cultivators of student knowl- edge. Potentiality is next to nothing if it isn't developed. The faculty of West Deer is made up of a select group of competent people who are experienced in the various fields which they represent. It is they who bring out the best of every student by teaching what is past, but with a mind to the future. The understanding teachers at West Deer provide the incentive needed by the students to work to their fullest capaci- ties. Often times, a student would fall behind if it wasn't for the encouragement of his fine instructor. Through the example which the faculty has set, the students leaving the sheltered guidance of West Deer are better pre- pared to face the trials which best them with a sound and open mind. Class Queen, Cathy Paszek, and King, Tom DeMartini, reigned over the pro- ceedings on Awards Day. The court included, left to Our Fearless Leaders, the Senior Class Officers were responsible right' Sharon Mothewson' Joe Kozom' Hope Cunningham' for much of the success of the Class of '67. They were, seated, treasurer, Sherry Zock and secretary, Karen Beckett. Standing, are Tom DeMartini, president, and Larry Huppenthal, vice-president. Class Colors Class Flower Class Motto Light Green and Dark Green Yellow Rose Faith is the Force of Life Class Song The official Class Song of the Class of '67 was to the tune of Laura's Theme from Dr. Zhivago. Lyrics were written by Donna Tedesco. Somewhere again, We had our play, There will be songs to sing, That made the rafters ring, And this refrain, Then to the Prom, We'll be remembering. We came to dance and sing. We'll hear the cheers, Will you, West Deer We gave at football games, Think of us now and then? All through the years, Godspeed to you We'll not forget the names. Till we return again. Someday, we'll meet again, we know, Someday, wherever we all may go. 26 Seniors l, the President of the Class of 1966, present this key to you, the President of the Class of 1967 . . . Thus, as always, the Junior Class, on Awards Day, became the Senior Class of 1967, beginning their last year of high school. For every Senior, the year was packed with memories of sports events, choosing queens, burning the midnight oil typing term papers, and making timeless friendships. Along with football season came the annual Homecoming game, with this year's queen, Marlene Georgic and her two Senior attendants. The Senior Class picnic changed an old tradition this year, being held in the fall at North Park's Rose Barn. Time spent by eating, playing volley ball, dancing, and just plain having fun rushed by. ln the Senior play, Junior Miss, directed by Mrs. Zilla, Marjorie Evanega enacted the lead part of Judy Graves. Judy, a teenager, is constantly add- ing one and one to get three. She draws the con- clusions that her Uncle Willis CDen Burchelll has a prison record, and that her father CTom DeMartinil is ready to run away with his secretary Uan Wil- kinsoni. Did you ever stroll through Central Park in the West Deer Gym? This was the decor for the Senior Dinner Dance. After a delicious chicken dinner, with all the trimmings, the Seniors assembled in the park for entertainment provided by several of West Deer's June Taylor Dancers and later by the swinging music of John Plesha's Orchestra. The Senior Queen, Cathy Paszek and her court, chosen by their Senior classmates, reigned on Awards Day. And again the Senior key was handed down with these words, l, the President of the Class of 1967, present this key to you, the President of the Class of 1968 . . . Let's take it on Broadway! After the successful play, Junior Miss, the cast presented Mrs. Zilla, the di- rector, with a token of their appreciation. SC Has Active Year Clean-ups, dances, and service projects made an active year for the Student Council. One of their biggest activities was the annual Tiny Tim Dance at -Christmas, held to collect food for needy families in West Deer Township. At the end of football season, the council sponsored a bonfire-pep rally with the cheer- leaders, majorettes, and band participating. Though the weather was cold, everyone had a great time. Late in March, the council held AFS Day. Foreign Exchange students from New Zealand, Germany, England and the Philippines visited West Deer and spoke of opportunities in the American Field Service. of dating customs in her country. s SC member tries out pogo stick donated at the Tiny Tim Dance. AFS Day - At the special program, moderated by Marita Marsili the Filipino representative tells FBLA Molds the Business Women of Tomorrow The FBLA put in quite a busy year this year. After the informal initiation of new members, the club began a program of interesting activities. They spon- sored an activities dance, and went on field trips to the Bell Telephone Co. and Robert Morris Business School. At the end of the year, the FBLA organized a program in which the girls divided into groups and spoke to the eighth graders of West Deer. Their pur- pose was to give eighth grade students an introduction to the commercial course offered at West Deer so that they may plan their schedules for the coming year. The members of FBLA had a great deal of fun and yet were being molded into the businesswomen of tomorrow. '67 Busy for Future Homemakers As every year, i967 was a busy one for the Future Homemakers of Amer- ica, The year began at Christmas with the formal initiation of new members and Christmas party. At Valentine- time, the FHA made Sweethearts of all the old folks at the Dorseyville Home for the Aged by baking cookies and entertaining them. An orientation of the eighth graders to the Home Ec- onomics Departments, and a Mother- Daughter Banquet and Awards Cere- mony finished the year. Due to well- chosen officers and helpful sponsors, it was a busy year for FHA! Helen Catanese receives membership pin at FHA initiation. Missing from the picture is Ellen Dahlstedt, secretary. Clubs Active FNA The Future Nurses of America of West Deer High School was one of the most active clubs this year. After the customary formal initiation of new members, the FNA planned two field trips to give members an idea of both forms of nurse's education: Hospital and Collegiate. The girls went to Montefiore Hospital, and then Duquesne University. Service projects, also, were big on the activities list. FNA members entertained, first, the Old Folks at Valley View Nursing Home, and the retarded children at St. Anthony's Home for Exceptional Children. Finally, the club spon- sored a bake sale in order to raise money for a scholarship fund. The money was given to the most outstanding member and was judged on the basis of an essay. This year's winner was Karen Beckett. INITIATION: Cyndi Callen receives her pin from Donna Szymanski, as secretary Ellen Dahlstedt looks on. FTA Gets New Sponsor Thanks to the FTA's new sponsor, Miss Benecki, the club managed to get in the swing of things despite their late start. Formal initiation was not until April, with Dr. Edgar J. Holtz as guest speaker. How- ever, FTA members soon prepared their first activity- the recognition of Nation- al Teaching Month. First members deco- rated the bulletin boards with information about the teaching profession, then stu- dents were given the opportunity to try out their teaching abilities in the class- room on student teaching day. The year was completed with a trip to Edinboro State Teachers College. New FTA members recite pledge at initiation. Members listen closely as Dr. Edgar J. Well, if you did speak French, you could have joined Le Cercle Francais of West Deer. The French Club, as it is commonly known, was revived this year after ten years of non-existence. The purpose of the club is to improve the spoken French of members and learn more about France. Throughout the year, members could be seen drawing maps of France, making a French Flag, performing a skit, having parties, saying I love you, listening to records, and singing, all in French! The members learned to speak more fluently and en- joyed themselves doing it-which all adds up to a promising first year for the French Club. 1 , Art Club Michelangelo, Raphael, and Rembrandt may someday be replaced by the members of the West Deer Art Club. fWould you believe they might have a showing at the same place?7 Nevertheless, Art Club members have been busy this year with all sorts of projects, most of which were shown in an exhibition in connection with the West Deer Band. Senior of- ficers of the club were John Riley, President, and Aleksandra Pirozek, Vice-President, Faculty Advisor was Mr. John Pastorek. ln addition to their partici- pation in the exhibit, the club visited an art exhibit at Kaufman's Department store and Carnegie Mu- seum. Clubs Key Club Continues The Key Club of West Deer High is a school service group affiliated with the Kiwanis Club and Key Club International. After high school grad- uation, members may join the Circle K in college, and upon college grad- uation are eligible for membership in the Kiwanis Club. New Pep in Pep Club Rudy, Rudy, he's our man! Let's give Rudy a great big hand! All year long the Pep Club could be found at football and bas- ketball games livening up cheers and root- ers. By selling beanies, banners, and pins, the Pep Club raised funds to provide free bus transportation to the away games for its mem- bers. Another fund was raised to buy a ma- roon blazer with the Pep Club insignia for their Fearless Leader, Mr. Powers. No one will ever forget the rousing, fantastic posters and signs which decorated the cafeteria. With- out the Pep Club and Cheerleaders behind our teams, West Deer would have been a pretty dull place. Their first project was to sell ball point pens with the basketball schedules printed on them. The profits were given to the Varsity Parents for letter jackets. Their second project was the formation of an Usher's Club for the basketball games. All in all, the club did a great deal to help keep Varsity sports a part of West Deer. You could always see a Junior on the telephone making last-minute arrangements for many of their year-round activities, as Joyce Charney does here. The Juniors - Sell-out bake sales, fun-filled skating par- ties, blushing brides, gowns galore at the salad smorgasbord, the successful Junior play, and a massive pop bottle drive, these are just a few things that the Juniors engaged in. Mrs. Joan Voskamp, faculty advisor, Mr. Stanley Pittman Sr., post-prom president, and the Junior Class parents had the gigantic task of organizing and raising money for the Jun- ior-Senior Prom. The Class of 1968 chose the modern and newly constructed Holiday lnn in New Ken- sington for the Prom site. The traditional post-prom party was held in the school gym with the Prom-goers entering the Enchanted Forest. Within the Junior Class there were many students who received scholastic as well as athletic awards. One of the biggest achieve- ments of the year was our Junior boys earn- ing athletic recognition to receive their jack- ets a year earlier. Judy Lytle and Gloria Angeloni were named chiefs-of-staff for the 67-68 edition of the Antler. Pauline Rokoski will be leading the cheers, while Debbie Szwarc and Eddie Lewe- tag will be at the head of our Marching Braves. For the Juniors, it was a year of hard work and varied activities, but, as everyone knows, it was well worth it as Juniors and Seniors alike enjoyed the 1967 Prom. The Juniors will always remember the work and fun they had while practicing for the play, Our Town , by Thorton Wilder. 2 bg y ' 7 . ., ., ,XVV 6,.,.,s..,,.,,..m-,. , , H.-is f Y Lxf . fix A t , '. ag 10- MW: Af -fmimzv ,pw .14 y awn? The Chorus West D'eer's 66-67 chorus, under the direction of Mr. Thomas A. Squiller, proved its musical ability to the school's student body once again. Mr. Squiller began the school year by accepting eleven boys into the group, giving West Deer, for the first time in years, a three-part chorus -soprano, alto, and baritone. It was at the Christmas program that the student audience was able to see a new side of the chorus - the acting side. This program included skits by members of the group, showing that the West Deer choral group is one of many and varied talents. This year the chorus had two programs other than tl Do You Hear What I Hear?--Three shepherds join the chorus in singing one of the best-loved '67 Style annual school functions. An exchange concert was arranged with Trafford-Penn Joint High School. Their chorus performed at an afternoon assembly for West Deer, and soon after the West Deer chorus traveled there for a program. The major chorus event was their spring concert, Singin' in the Spring. This was an evening pro- gram, held in the gymnasium, with the proceeds used to have the chorus blazers cleaned. Without this lively and busy chorus, the student body would have no contact with good music as they have now at all their programs. ff Climb Ev'ry Mountain-This was the advice given to the Class of '67 by the chorus as they sang this song at commencement exercises. New routines and numbers were learned, yet there was time for swimming, canoeing, tennis, badminton, dancing, and just plain goofing off ! The band played at all school programs. The two major events, though, were the Winter Concert and Spring Arts Festival, the latter held in conjunction with the Art Department, displaying exhibitions of student talent after the band concert under the direction of Mrs. AI Mauroni. Many honors were bestowed upon individual band members this year, as pictured on the preceding pages. ln addition: Sundee Kelly - Carnegie Honors Band, Bill Salomon - State Region IV and District Honors Band, Bill Conway and Russ Mundy - Junior High Honors Band. lt was not only a very active year for the band, but also one full of fun and satisfaction. .44 ,M , . .. . All the home games had to be played on opponent's fields, because W.D.'s field was being resodded thus, only a minority of Braves' fans could attend. The team's inability to become untracked resulted in an unim- pressive year in the record book, but not for pro- viding thrills. At the start of the season, spirit and confidence overflowed, but with every injury and defeat, it slowly declined. Both the defense and offense were handi- capped with injuries, thus causing players to play double positions. Though the offense wasn't great, it was better than the average offense. The team's best games were with Knoch, Penn Joint, and Hamp- TOI1. The only W.D. win came against the tough Knoch team. Both the defense and offense had their great- est day, as the Braves whipped the Knights l9-6. The highlights of the game were touchdowns of 46 and 4l yards by Ozzie Kenyon, one of 36 yards by Tom Mellon, and 3 pass interceptions by Stan Pittman with long runs following. Hard tackling and great running, a net of l86 yards filled Braves' fans with great pride. Ozzie Kenyon was chosen as the team's most valuable player by his compiling the greatest amount of yardage. Honors came to Dennis Kashlak, as he was named to the second string WPIAL Football All-Star Team. Upcoming teams should be one of the school's finest, since many Sophomores played first string on this year's team. Their experience will replace the inexperience of this year's team, providing the neces- sary qualities needed for a winning season. Coach Whartenby is terminating his football reign as the Braves' Coach after seven years of ded- icated work. Coach Bolton, formerly of Edfra, will head the squad for the 67-68 football season. Off and running goes one of West Deer's eleven, on his way to gain important yardage. Braves' power is demonstrated by Ozzie Kenyon as he goes through Richland's tough front line. All through the season the team faced over-sized opponents but showed magnificent ability and forti- tude. The Braves, backed by its loyal fans, constantly threw roadblocks to the leading contenders. The greatest moment was Verona's defeat, one of the toughest and most exciting league contests. The score changed hands many times. ln the last seconds of the game, the score was tied, forcing overtime play. Suddenly, with their usual burst of speed, the Braves quickly scored to forge ahead, never to be stopped again as the Braves defeated Verona 70-66. Leading the team in scoring was team captain, Dean Girdwood with 374 points. Other Seniors were Ozzie Kenyon, 144 points, Joe Kozora, lOl points, and Jim Wright, 35 points. Contributing greatly to the team's success were Juniors, Joe Catanese, John Sobran, and Pinky Victain, who was also the leading rebounder. Sophomore Pat Kelly, in this year's start- ing lineup, demonstrated great ability. These boys show great promise for a fine team next year. The team was handicapped this year by the loss of Senior Gary Zock, who was last year's second high- est scorer. Gary suffered a leg injury, forcing him to miss the entire season. Under the leadership of Coach DiMarco and as- sistant Coach Scimio, we look for West Deer to have a leading contender in the very near future. Even though the team didn't experience a winning season, they played excellent ball and gave the school good reason to be proud. We Tie the Score. Bravettes Revived This was a year of new experiences for the members of the Bravettes Girls' Bas- ketball Team. The sport was reactivated after four years of inactivity without a sponsor, when Miss Kelly took on the re- sponsibility. lt was a difficult year for the girls, for they entered into league play with no pre- vious experience. The entire season was one of learning by doing. The team was handicapped by their late start and by not having a place to- practice or play home games, for the gymnasium was occupied by the Braves' Varsity basketball. Many of the Bravettes' home games and prac- tices took place in the Richland Youth Foundation Gym. The team this year consisted of juniors and seniors, with some sophomores. The remainder of the sophomores, along with freshmen made up the junior varsity team. The Varsity had a record of O and 6, while the J.V. record was l and 5. With the loss of the following Seniors: Adriann Hazlett, Mary Geib, Joanne Dropp, Elaine Trocki, Cheryl Leggens, Carol Zalus, and manager Cathy Gaurich through graduation, the job will be left to underclass regulars, juniors: Diane Drum, Nancy Gilson, Elaine Catherwood, and Carolyn Miller, and sophomore Anna Marie Gaurich. V Here the Bravettes' Nancy Gilson makes a move against an opponent. It's a score for sure as seen in the faces of Cookie Paszek and Adriann Hazlett. l Coach Kelly, Lorraine Dombroski, Cookie Paszek, and Beth Gordon show the spirit of the Bravettes basketball team. The newly formed golf team at West Deer, under the coaching of Mr. DeFazio, gave a fine showing of competition in their first year. Front to back, left to right: Coach Joe DeFazio, Edi Charlton, Jim Bibza, Dave Griffiths, Rich Grove, Ed Rush, Bill Baxter, Mark Geib, Jim Graham, Dick Burns, Phil Furer. Golf, Track Initiated lnexperience played a major role in the one win and i9 defeats of the West Deer golf team. Although they were beaten many times, the team played hard and posed a threat to many of their opponents. Mr. DeFazio did a fine job as coach during the first year for this new West Deer sport. The team had a fine corps of boys this year, all eligible to return next year. The team played in a tough section, including such teams as Knoch, Free- port, Ford City, and Butler. One of the toughest oppo- nents was Jim Simons of Knoch, a state champion, who usually made the difference between winning and losing. Our lone win this year was Ford City's 8-7 defeat. The match went down to the final hole, as Ed Charl- ton won by a single stroke. By the close scores of many matches, it is evident that next year's team, under the knowledge and teaching of Mr. DeFazio should have a winning season. Another new sport initiated at West Deer this year is track. The team had only one match due to a late start. It was a year of firsts . . . the first for the team, and also for Coach Bolton, who will be next year's football coach, as well as track. This year was employed as a prep year. The boys prepared to compete next year as a solid team and to be ready for the upcoming football season. ln its single meet this year, the team scored only one point, but they showed promise. There should be a good team for the first full season. Coach Bolton hands out a few tips on the proper way to get away to a fast break. Best Ever West Deer had many of the qualities for a win- ning season this year, a good coaching staff, good players, teamwork, determination, and hustle-in fact, everything except luck. Quoting coaches Mickey Vitkay and Richard Sekanick, We had the best pitching, the best fielding, and the best throwing. This opinion was shared by the team and student body. The West Deer nine wasn't able to coordinate hitting and throwing well enough to fool opposing teams, although they racked up a .500 record, with six wins and six losses. The team had record-breaking pitching and catch- ing staffs this season, a source of pride for all. The pitchers, headed by Jim Wright and Joe Cantonese, set a new strike-out record this season. The catchers tallied a total of sixteen put-outs during the twelve game season. There were six Seniors on the team this season, the loss of which will create a problem for the team. They are pitcher Jim Wright, catcher Dave Power, shortstop Ozzie Kenyon, first baseman Dean Gird- wood, third baseman Don Mathews, and right-fielder Den Burchell. Left to capably fill in their places are such players as the three sophomores on the team, Bob Farrasso, Mike Nesbitt, and Greg Yaworski. They have been most cooperative in making this ' ' e. publication possib To Whom It May Concern CW. D. students, alumni, faculty, administration, and whoever else happens to be reading thislr Thank you. If it wasn't for your exis- tence, we wouldn't have this book, and if it wasn't for your support, we couIdn't have it. The COALAGRA is supposed to be your book, and we've tried to make it that, to capture a little bit of you, W.D. H.S., on these flat pages. There is cov- erage of your activities, your emotions, and your being. Our aim is to bring back the best memories of a great and wonderful year. We've done our best and hope we've succeeded. Again, thank you. The COALAGRA Staff Mr. Mann, You've been the greatest sponsor anyone could ask for. Your help, encouragement and guidance kept us going when we had had it. When we were down, you were always around. Only we know how much you've done and gone through for us, after school meetings, Saturday workdays, trips to Colao's 8C Huttinger's, putting miles on your car leven dent- ing a fenderl, missing your college classes, getting it from those who felt that your decisions weren't right lwe were always behind youi, trips for pop lFrescal, time spent making important telephone calls, hours of early morning work, hours of late night work, hours and hours and hours of work, and mostly just putting up with us. During these IO months we've come to consider you a friend rather than a teacher. We hope you feel the same way. What can we say but-thank you-you're the greatest. The '67 Coalagra Staff Personals As we've said, this is a student book, but we'd like this little piece for us the staff. We've had some great times, huh, kids? Room I6 has been like a second home, tour only one during the summerll lt's been hard, but we can't forget the many experiences we've shared and the close friendships that have de- veloped. We'll keep the memories of all our crazy fun: the writing on the wall tanonymous letters on the boardl, attacking anyone with new pictures, leaving big black blanks instead of pictures, listening to a blasting radio l Windy , Can't Take My Eyes Off You lg the room-sized wastebasketg living on Fresca, Coke, and Vidic's pies, and the bulletin board cap- tions. Memories, too, of our goofy arguments : over pictures, over no pictures, over people being in the room , over people not being in the room, over let- tering copy, and laying out pages, and line shots, and type faces, and emptying wastebaskets, and stealing fans, and everything, and anything, and nothing. We've gone through kind ofa lot together, haven't we, gang? But it's been great . . . And now, my own special note to my staff and Mr. Mann. l've been a nasty, cranky, cantankerous, daughter-of-a-gun, I know, and I can't understand how you put up with it, but I love you all for it. I can't ever for- get all the help you've given me, I appre- ciate it more than you'll ever know. My extra special thanks to all you kids on the summer staff lyou know who you arel-- you're really the greatest bunch around. I don't know how to show you how much I mean it. All I can say, is, Thank you, DianelChiefl . A . 76-77 Activities i..... Administration . . Advertisements .... Antler .....,.. Art Club ..t. Band .... Baseball . . Basketball . . , Boosters . .
