' mmm T a miga 'rowusiug mera ser c CHOOL 7aR The school year T956-57W a year of memories, fashions, fads, and progress. This was the year of Elvis Presley, rock and roll, calypso, and romantic ballads. New fashions invaded West Deer. We wore Ivy Leagues, bucks and sad- dles, Bermudas, and car coats. Congestion reigned in our halls because of girls wearing billowing hoops and can cans. Our hair was fashioned in chignons, pony tails, crewcuts, and balboas. The era of girls in jeans and boys in D.A.'s was over, replaced by an era of neatness and snappy dressers. We sighed over Pat Boone, Julie London, Sal Minio, Natalie Wood, Tab Hunter, Kim Novak, Rock Hudson and Anita Ekberg. Still unforgotten was James Dean. Our favorite songs were Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, True Love, Banana Boat Song, and Young Love . In school we were first to have a P. A. system, demerit system, Student Congress, and a Homecoming. The hot spot of the world was centered in the Middle East, meanwhile Hun- garians were fleeing to the borders to escape Communist agression. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon were elected to a second term in the White House. The biggest and best news science offered was the discovery of the polio vaccine by Pittsburgh scientist, Jonas Salk. A year to be remembered'-l956-57. James Dean Elvis Presley 7 7UU'3 I 14 Ween MRS. Producing this pictorial history of the year at West Deer meant working until midnight many nights, working over weekends, working during holidays w vvork, vvork that never seemed to end. Indeed, long hours, patience, and, above all, dependability became the re- quirements of students working on the Coalagra. However, the goal was finally reach- ed. The deadline was met! You are now looking at the results. We hope you particularly enjoy the many points which especially distin- guish the T957 Coalagra f- the cover, the pictures - largest and most numerous ever reproduced in any West Deer year- book, the special effect ads, the extra- large pages, and the many other ex- clusive features. A Great Friend This page, in honor of a devot- ed citizen and friend of the students, sponsored as a per- manent memorial in Mr. Saba- tini's honor by his fellow mem- bers ofthe West Deer Lions Club. H ffzwgmzawue... It was with tear-filled eyes one memorable fall day this past year that hun- dreds of West Deer students joined many more community citizens in bidding farewell to a great friend-Mr. Albert Sabatini. Indeed, West Deer High School has never had a more loyal friend and sup- porter than Patrolman Sabatini. One of his prime goals was the safe-guarding and guidance of West Deer students. One of the finest tributes paid to the honor of Mr. Sabatini appeared as an editorial in The Valley Daily News. Probably, it best describes the feelings of all Mr. Sabatini's friends. Excerpts from the editorialare as follows: Al, as everyone knew him, was known to thousands. His friends were almost numberless. For he was a man in which the spirit of gentleness and kind- ness predominated. Even in the performance of his sometimes stern duties as policeman he exhibited these qualities. His devotion to West Deer had some of the spirit of patriotism in it. To him it was a great deal more than a mere political division. It was a part of him. And he did his part to help it grow and to make it a better place in which to live. He was a leader in civic life. He took a leading part in all community activities. He was never too busy to lend a hand. Mr. Sabatini leaves behind something far more tangible than a memory. lt is a spirit, the spirit of civic pride and community loyalty. His neighbors and friends will never cease to talk of the service he rendered and of his kindly deeds. For, you see, Mr. Sabatini was a man who completely lost himself in the vast areas of service to others. There is none to take his place. ALBERT FORTY LEWETAG . . . West Deer's Finest This memorial page to West Deer High School's greatest alumnus is sponsored by his fel- low members of the West Deer High School Alumni Assn. 4oa1af all flfeaefa Be 4 Mention the number 40 at West Deer High School and any person will tell you it stands for a person - a person immortal as far as all at West Deer are concerned. Forty was the nickname of West Deer's greatest athlete, Albert Lewetag. lt was with stunning effect that all at West Deer High and in the community learned of his tragic death early in September of 1956. ln kaleidoscopic fashion it brought to mind the days when Forty had led a young West Deer High School to some of its greatest victories on the athletic fields. lt's Forty who is credited with scoring the first touchdown in West Deer history in 1945. ln that same year he is credited with scoring the first touch- down and extra point which resulted in the school's first football victory when West Deer was two years old. His success with the school's first baseball team was just as phenomenal. He helped lead it to a runner-up WPIAL championship in 1944. He won a third letter as a star play-maker'-on the school's first basketball team, as well as play- ing on the varsity volley ball team West Deer fielded in 1945-46. ln addition to his athletic prowess, Forty's friends remember him as a gentleman within the classroom. Everybodywas Forty's friend. He was active in many West Deer High School clubs and organizations. He is remembered as being the first person to appear on the West Deer gym stage, the same stage used today. Lewetag had a leading part in an operetta with an lndian theme. Too, he was included as a charter member and organizer of such organiza- tions as The Antler, Hall Patrol, Varsity Club, and Chorus. When World War ll broke out, Forty was among the first to go to the aid of his country. Before graduating, he served with the U. S. Army. In 1948 he returned to do post graduate study at his alma mater. He received his treasured West Deer diploma in June of that year. Yes, although Forty is gone, his memory will remain as long as there is a West Deer High School. His name and all it stands for will remain a goal for all West Deer students and graduates to follow, a goal of the finest West Deer can produce. kxggw .cts Mr. Malcolm second from left, and friends admire one of the many trophies Won by his baseball teams. This page, honoring the memory of an outstanding West Deer citizen and servant of God, spon- sored by Mr. Malcolm's fellow members of American L e g i o n Post 593. Je .faued Wann? People February will be a date long remembered by the students of West Deer High and the community of West Deer Township. It was on this day that our Maker called into His kingdom one of His most faithful servants, Robert C. Mal- colm. There are many things for which West Deer High School will remember Mr. Malcolm-his love of young people, his help with the oratorical contests, his character building baseball team on which we played-iust to mention a few. Probably the editor of the Valley Daily News best presented the feelings of all in the following excerpts of his memorial editorial: ln a real sense Bob Malcolm gave his life to others. He served through the church, the American Legion and other organizations with which he was af- filiated. But, most of all, he gave himself. He was deeply interested in baseball. He loved the West Deer Legion team. He gloried in its triumphs. But his deep- est interest was not in the team as a team, or in its victories. It was in the boys who composed the team. Only they know how deep was his sense of devotion to them, how he sought to teach them the rules of the great game of life, how he made it possible for many of them to attend college and gain other advant- ages. He loved boys and young men. He was concerned about them, their health, their success in life, but most of all in their moral and religious training. He wanted them to become men of rugged character who dare to have con- victions and who dare to live for them and by them. Bob Malcolm was a truly great man, great in his ideals, great in his con- cern for others, great in his devotion to worthy causes and great because, when the chips were down, he was ready to stand and be counted. His passing leaves a niche in the life of the community that no one can fill just as he filled it. Indeed, it may never be filled again. We were fortunate to have had him so long. With the passing of the years his stature will increase as we come better to understand the worth of his leadership. We are poorer, much poorer, because he has gone. His memory, locked deep in our hearts, will abide longer than any statue that could be erected to perpetuate his name. Hail and farewell, friend of the years. May God's perpetual light shine upon a gentle soul. Along with the huge task of compiling and editing a yearbook comes the equally vital iob of raising adequate finances.
