BURNS As we leave West Deer High School this year, we, the Seniors will take with us countless treasured memories. Among these memories will be those of the friends we have made. When we think of these friends, our minds go toward a person who has been a patient, understanding, and true friend during our whole four years of high school life. Holding before us his high Christian standards he has quietly and unassumingly led us successfully down the road of our high school career. Not only guiding and supervising us as a principal, he has become our personal friend and has affectionately watched over us and aided us in every way possible. Douhtless in years to come as we think of West Deer High School, just so will we think of Mr. Burns who has tirelessly striven for the past eight years to make our high school a more pleasant and wonderful place, Therefore we, the graduating class of 1952, of West Deer High School, to express our deep appreciation to our friend, take humble pride in dedicating this yearhoolc to William E. Burns. ' Lives af great men all 1'e1l1i11d 118, We cfm make our lives .mI2Iime, Am! clujzarlirzg leave bchiml us, Fvotjlrivzlx on the sands of timef' 3 dr PAGE FROM A COWBOY'S JOURNAL While visiting in the East, I spent a week at West Deer High School. Strangely enough everything I saw there I compared to my ranch home in the West. A11 activ- ities, sports, and even the studies were comparable to something from the wide open spacesf' I suppose the part of the school life which began this comparison in my mincl was the sports. I founcl that the Class of 1952 was notecl for its fine football, basketball, and baseball players. Also along with goocl sportsmanship they learned high riclin' and square shootin'. The Senior Class reminclecl me of the pioneers of the olcl West, for they, like pioneers, will soon be leaving the place they know so well, to travel on to bigger and harcler things. I think their stay at West Deer High School, which I will nickname Bar W.D.H.S. Ranch, has well equipped them for the task. I am keeping the following pictures and Writeups about Bar W.D.H.S. Ranch so that I will never forget my wonderful visit. This, I believe, is all I need For my philosophy and creed. THE GOOD OLD DAYS CLASS HISTORY In 1948 we, the Seniors of today, became freshmen of West Deer High School. Can you ever forget how excited and proud you were to become a part of this won- derful school? Our first few weeks as freshmen were quite confusing. It seemed we would never be able to get to classes on time or to find the right room, but finally we conquered this obstacle and got right into the swing of things. With lvlrs. Ekas as class sponsor, the first big undertaking as freshmen was an assembly. Songs, dances and other forms of entertainment were furnished by members of our class thus making this affair a great success. This was followed by other activities, highlighted by the Freshmen Party. In 1949, we returned as wise sophomores. We were minus a few of the original group, but proudly we took the place that awaited us. During that year many from our class became band members, majorettes, flagtwirlers or cheerleaders. We were allowed to join clubs and became a part of all the functions of the school. Miss Kaufman, Sophomore sponsor, rounded up her group to plan for a senior treat, the annual S 86 S Party. From this time on we became an appreciated class. September, 1950-what a momentous time that was, for then we became upper- classmen of West Deer. During this year things really began to happen. Under the guidance of Mrs. Schuster, we choose our class motto, flower, and colors. Arsenic and Old Lace, our junior class play, was a huge success due to the efforts of Mr. Fortun and Mr. Powers. The greatest accomplishment of our junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom. Decorations were centered around the Cinderella theme. This was a romantic ending to an outstanding and successful year. Cver one hundred members of our class entered West Deer in September, 1951 as seniors. This was our biggest year, for we had more activities than ever before. We ordered and exchanged namecards, had our pictures taken, received our year- books, and participated in many club activities. Our senior play, We Shook the Family Treei' was acclaimed by many as one of the best ever produced in West Deer. We are grateful to these outstanding thespians and their capable leader, Miss Jarerna. The boys and girls worked together to make the Senior Bazaar a great suc- cess. March was the month when our annual luncheon was held, and the day we learned more about many of the occupations in our community. In April we jour- neyed to Pittsburgh to visit the Court I-louse, the H. Heinz Company, and other points of interest. Now the month of May sees us sending out our invitations for graduation. The day we had awaited so long has arrived. We feel just a little sad, but yet proud because now we are alumni of West Deer High. Be S trong!
