MR. BERKENHEGER After twenty-four years of teaching at one high school, what teacher has been dedicated enough to stick it through - Mr. Bill Berkenheger, that's who. He began teaching at the old Covina High School in 1954 and became part of the original staff who laid the foundation of our great Land of Sparta. This active Spartan enioys boating with his wife of twenty-nine years and their three children, Bill, Jr. 22 p Jill, 20, and Bob 11 When he is not puttering around in his garden or working on his cars at his Covina home, you may find him all dressed up in a funny striped suit, gesturing wildly. In other words, he, along with Mr. Woo, referees many ofthe local sporting events. Although Mr..Berkenheger is well re- membered as a P.E. teacher and coach, having led the WCHS Varsity Baseball team to a league championship, most students recognize him as the guy in the car with the sign on the side that means -- Driver, Move Over or Pedestrian, Beware. Yes, he is one of the .Driver Education teachers who puts his life on the line each day as he strives to make our streets a little safer. For his long,years of service to WCHS we proudly dedicate the 1980 LYCURGEAN to Mr. Bill Berkenheger. MR. WOO Many WCHS students have benefited from the guidance and dedication of our outstanding head of the Business Edu- cation Department, Mr. Charles Woo. He attended high school ln Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Business. His first teaching assignment began here on the Spartan campus, and here is where Mr. Woo hopes to remain until retirement. Many young people of the San Gabriel Valley have greatly profited from the care, concern, and many hours of hard work that Mr. Woo has devoted to the Chinese Cultural Association. He teaches Chinese-descended children the art of making and carrying the Chinese dragon for parades. His group has performed in the Eastwest Shrine game half-time show, the opening ceremony of the Dod- gers 1978 season, and the New Years' Chinese festival in Chinatown, San Fran- cisco. When he isn't leading dragons or IIS- tening to fans cheer or boo his official decision, Mr. Woo may be found enjoying a quiet evening at home listen- ing to the music of the 40's and 50's. For his many hours of devoted service to the students of WCHS and his con- tribution to our community, we proudly dedicate the 1980 LYCURGEAN to Mr. Charles Woo.
