'f. zfz- 5:2 :5:5:3Q:1 . :7 ' w e For the students and teachers of West Covina High School, this year has been one of building and dreaming. While our future home was being constructed, our classes, teams, clubs and other student organizations were being created and developed. West Covina's Spartans worked hard and well, giving creditable performances in all endeavors despite the many limitations imposed upon them. To symbolize the spirit and good humor that was characteristic ot our student body, we created LYKE and LYDIE who represent the Spartan and Spar- tanette of West Covina's Sparta . There is still much building to do and we hope our dreams of today will be tomorrovv's realities. se ,gif-1 Q' ' -P' '93 33 1 v , 3 9 9 91 Q u '. Q Q S N55 gee 65:21, m?r? a ' - 552:44 :N Q . . . This question is typical of the hundreds of questions asked each day of the first principal of West Covina High school-Mr. Maurice L. Wooden. The students are always answered in a friendly manner, and usually have a discussion on last weeks game, the new school, or some other Student Body function. Because of his great interest in the students' and school, Mr. Wooden is well liked and appreciated by the entire student body and facultv. Our friendly and personable principal was born and raised on a farm in Indiana. He went to Martinsville High School, and at- tended twelve or fifteen different colleges, receiving his master's degree from the University of Indiana, and his bachelor's de- gree from Franklin College in Fresno. While in high school and college, he lettered in basketball, football, and track. After college, Mr. Wooden spent fifteen years as a coach, then he moved to West Covina where he served as District Super- visor for seven years. He was then selected as the principal for West Covina's first High School. Mr. Wooden has five composite maiors, which are English, Social Science, Health and Physical Education, Education and Psy- chology, and Biological Science. To have such an educational record is most unusual and outstanding. We, the yearbook staff of West Covina High School, respectfully dedicate our first annual to the noblest Spartan of them all,' Mr. Maurice L. Started off the season in good fashion winning their first five games out of seven. After Christmas vacation the team led by Bill Bryant, Bruce Osgood, Ron Butcher, Grant Die- bold, and George Duffin, continued to turn in winning performances with wins over Warren, Covina JV's, Po- mona Catholic, and Webb among others. Bruce Osgood broke his shoulder in the middle of the season which hurt the team the rest of the season as Osgood was the second leading scorer at the time.
