It was the year that Pioneer 10 passed by Jupiter and out into the endless reaches of space carrying Earth's message to whatever may be out there. Perhaps the 2074 yearbook will include We- Go's first class with a galaxy exchange. This year we had foreign exchange studentsg Richie from Greece, Veronique from France, and Pato from Chile. 1974 also brought an end to the Arab Oil embargo and once again students could return to their gas guzzling cars. Along with the changing Administration in the National Government, 1974 brought a new administration to the High School. Dr. Kamm, the new principal, did much for student-administration relations by going into the halls and classes and being accessi- ble to all on request. They were eventually abolished by Dr. Kamm and the school board to the general approval of the student body. For the first time in many years, a new class, Con- sumer Education, was added to the graduation requirements. New sports were added, too. Soccer and Gymnastics. But more than anything else, 1974 was the year of the Wildcat. For the first time in history, West Chicago's football team went all the way downstate and brought back the State 3A Football Championship after an undefeated season. 1974 was a year of precedent being set and will be remembered for many years to come. 4 '52 M EMM' Q Q v 6 2 K X f S 3 K 5 s v 1 X wk. The week started out with the crown- ing of King, Virgil Tuck, and Queen, Debbie Burkhart, and her court, Cindy Cleaver, Gayle Christopher, Pam Braun, Cindy Davisg theires- corts, Bob Dively, Scott Hall, Henry Antes, and Mike Novosad. The Sycamore Band added to the festivities by participating, for the first time, in our parade. Perhaps it was the cold weather that made the traditional bonfire even more ap- preciated. The week ended with our Wildcat football team beating the Sycamore Spartans 47-0. SFF' eww? wif 2 13 9117! itil H! mM '-fi. 5 N S i isi Nga' ' r . . .. The Wildcats were also the first Class 3A State Champs in the state of lllinois. The Wildcats were coached this year by Defensive coach, Ron Hanseng Defensive line coach, Jeff Ainsworth, Offensive line coach, Bob Owens: and Offensive backfield coach, Paul Unruh. The season was highlighted, not only by the Annual Awards Ban- quet, but also by being chosen WLS Team of the Week, appearing on the Ray Rayner Show, at the victory assembly after the State Championship Game, where our coach, Mr. Paul Unruh, was voted LSC coach of the year. The 1974 Wildcats were a very closely knit team. Sports pages proclaimed that they lived, loved, and won together. The players loved football and each other. They played with enjoyment and enthusiasm that is seldom displayed at any level of competition. The 1974 Wildcats were GREAT!!!! The coaches and the en- tire school were very proud of the fine progress the 1974 Wildkits made. Everyone feels certain the Kits, when they move on to varsity next year, will help carry on the championship tradition of the school. The Freshman Team completed a 7-2 season. Their offense was effective as they out scored their opponent by scoring 337 pts. The defense also had a great season as they held their opponent to only 68 pts. The Freshman B Team were conference champs. Both coaches feel the freshman had an excellent season and could be the class to watch in the future. Latin students presented modern words rooted in Latin, German students presented Spanish explorers, and French students pointed out the influence of the French in the names of cities in Illinois. Following the skits, Louis Jolliet, in person of Mr. Reid Lewis, French teacher at Elgin Larkin High School, came alive to emphasize our heritage from the French in the development of Illinois, telling the story of the reenactment of the Jolliet- Marquette expedition 300 years ago. Following the presentation, everyone was invited down to the cafeteria for refreshments and festivities, which also represented the four different cultures. These cultures were Latin, German, Spanish, and French. rw 5 l, 2 fa., -2 - 1 LWOW AN .41 qlnii Hwfwmnw nw :V Z 7, 'Emir Y j1i,Zg25?3i I Mm f 4 Q, ' 'Ag , -, 2 by if W. 1 ' W H .fi 1 xr il , 1 WQGITS 'ff 1' it gs... The team made their way to the Little Seven Championship Meet which was held here at We-Go. Taking the meet with 1101!2 points, West Chicago literally ran away with the meet as the next teams were Oswego and Morris with total of 51 points each. After taking second place at Districts, We-Go sent six grapplers fZane Bussler, Tom Reed, Don Deutsch, Larry Fry, Scott Hall, and Henry Antesl to sectionals. From sectionals we had Zane Bussler, a sophomore, take first, and Tom Reed and Scott Hall both taking third place finishes. Then, Zane proceeded downstate for a sixth place in the State comp- etition. Congratulations on a fine showing. GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE TO ALL WE- GO's GRAPPLERS. Sophomores also made a fine showing by taking first in Little Seven Conference competition. As Heidi Miller told us inthe Prologue, . . . when Right was Right, Wrong was Wrong, and you could really tell the difference. The story concerned Troop 14 of the United States Forest Rangers in the Rocky Mountains and their quest for that notorious band of Indians, the Kadotas. Their exploits, especially with the young ladies of Eastchester Finishing School, were hilarious. The ln- dians, who numbered only three, added to the complexity of the plot. Naturally, in an operetta of that day and age, love played an important part, so our leads had plenty to do in that Department, they were Captain Jim and Little Mary, Corporal Billy and Nancy Twinkle, General tor Uncle??j Oscar and Madame Ernestine. And Right triumphed in the end, even to the rehabilitation of the renegade Yellow Feather in our Flag-waving finish. Oops! I almost forgot the star who stole the show - Looie the Duck! The Ch0iI S, year started slow but became very active during November and con- tinued until Baccalaureate on June 9. The girls' Choir sang at both the Veterans Day Assembly and the Christmas Vesper Program. As usual, the Freshman Chorus sang at three concerts and spent the year learning and reviewing music fundamentals. The Concert Choir sang for a near capacity crowd during the Christmas Vespers on December 15. They also sang for all the General Mills employees for the ninth con- secutive year. On February 22, the Concert Choir was invited to participate in the 11th annual Choral-Clinic Festival on the campus of Illinois State University in Nor- mal, Illinois. All the choirs and eighth-grade chorus combined for a choral night which was presented on May 19. Both the choir and the Madrigals Singers provided music for the community during the school year. The year ended for the Concert Choir on Baccalaureate night, June 9. lt was a busy but most fulfilling year. 56 1- wg 1 wfzkvf' z ff ?.em,,Ug l 4 '-,, 2 ' ww .Q Ja n X' ,ks 4 If 1 - , 5'f,,- CEL' K ' , , 5l fj--V Q ji-f'f'5 f11 5M5?Z2' fq,--V f ,wr ,QQ v -Cui al ' mmm.. . ig , , f ww A 'N ,wi Q, Qi! We grew to 30 string players, aided by 33 experienced wind and percussion from Band, to a total of 63 members. Early in the school year, we helped to present the annual Veterans Day Assembly. We especially ap- preciate the extra efforts of our Wind and Percussion sections, who were in the height of the football playoff season at the time. Then in December we participated in the annual Christmas Contest. We considered our Winter Concert in February a high point because of the difficulty of music we per- formed, and also the quality of our performance. Then State Music Contest took our attention, with the string choir once again receiving a superior rating. The School Musical, Little Mary Sunshine , was more fun than ever this year. We played on a joint con- cert with the Elementary and Junior High Orchestras in May, to show how much growth was possible in eight years of Public school music. Our Final Spring Concert on May 27 was a time of reflection on a most satisfying year. We honored the nine Seniors who were playing their last school concert with the Orchestra. Our last public perfor- mance was at Honors Night on June 9, when we played the Processional and Recessional Marches for the Senior Class. J THE 1974-75 SCHOOL YEAR OPENED WITH A BANG FOR THE MARCHING BAND, as the football season was extended an extra month. Band members were proud of their part in school spirit, and traveled to Geneseo, Glenbard North, and Normal. Our concert season went very well. Fresh off the football field, we played a series of Christmas assembly concerts in local elemen- tary schools. In February we presented the Winter Band Concert, then State Music Contest for Solos and Ensembles kept us busy until March 8. In April we presented a joint con- cert with the Beginners, Intermediate, and Junior High Bands from West Chicago. Our audience found out how much a student can grow, musically, during eight years' study in Public School Bands. All of a sudden, here it was, time for our Final Spring Concert, when we honor our Senior Band members. When we saw the Senior Awards, with all those activities during four years written out on them, we realized just how much the Band and its members have done, in and for our school. OO an 3 if J! Not only did they win a dual meet, they also won a triangular meet over Morris and St. Francis. The team was led by five top quality seniors: Jerry Stockton, Randy Hill, John Crittenden, Roarke Anderson, and Mike Novosad. The Wildcats finished the season strongly taking a fourth place out of eleven teams at the Crystal Lake Invitational and placing fourth in the Little Seven Conference Meet. West Chicago set a new 880 relay conference record. It broke our school record set in 1936. Also at the conference meet, the 440 relay team placed first and Roarke Anderson won the 220 yard dash.
