DISPLAY - SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ROOM Ill vwi : H ■I : West Chester University West Chester, Pennsylvania 19383 Volume LXXXII hen we left home four years ago to pursue our college Wf careers, we chose a new direction — the avenue of higher education. Some came to West Chester Univer- sity to get away from parents, to make new friends, to party, and to find themselves. But, what we have found in the last four years is that higher education is not limited to the classroom. All of the students here at West Chester are constantly learning. Every day we are faced with new problems and for- thcoming challenges stemming from the littlest of emergen- cies — like what avenue to pursue for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night festivities, to uncompatible roommates, to the twenty-five page typed term paper due in the morning. The journey of higher education has forced us to come to terms with our limitations as individuals — where we must draw the line with ourselves, friends, roommates, partying, and class work. So, after our final year as undergraduates, we are ready — ready to put into effect what we have learned inside and out- side of the classroom, willing to deal with problems, hassles, deadlines, and conflicts that we are about to face for the rest of our lives. The forthcoming pages of The Serpentine are aimed to looking at the life we have led in the last four years; the paths we have chosen to walk, run, and sometimes even stumble down, all in the pursuit of the avenue of higher education. Forever in our Hearts unK r J- : ' .d w Winter snow makes for pretty pictures around cam- pus. It also gave students three extra vacation days during the spring semester. With its eight floors and huge front yard, many consider Goshen the social center of West Chester. In the summer Goshen houses freshman orientation sessions. Although at that time the rooms appear empty and ugly, by September a new bunch of students add flavor to bare walls and desolate hallways. T.rX( KILLINGER Killinger Hall, a three-story dormitory is located on Rosedale Ave., where the college football field once stood. Previously known as the all male dormitory, Killinger is now the home of honor students and abides by a 24-hour quiet code. This is the only dor- mitory where one can accomplish the lost art of studying. McCarthy McCarthy, located across Church Street from Goshen Hall, consists of three floors. The first houses national and international exchange students. The second floor claims the regular crowd, and the third echos mainly of graduate students and student teachers. The 258-person population of McCarthy Hall is a small one by West Chester standards, but actually it is just one big, friendly family. f i COLLESC .1 :i III LI 121 ' lb! This dormitory resembles its sister dorm, Wayne Hall, in appearance and desperate need of interior redecoration. Many students dread Sanderson ' s unkempt looks, but behind broken down bathrooms, one can see the closeness of its residents which keeps this dorm brimming with activity and warmth. 1 iiiif U ' l _ ih !F ■M ■H r SCHMIDT Schmidt Hall, regarded as the only single sex dormitory on campus, stands between Wayne and Sanderson Halls. The newest dormitory has been an all female hall since its opening in 1971. In the summer, Schmidt serves as a home for the Philadelphia Eagles while they practice at South Campus. The tidiest of all the dormitories on campus, this hall engulfs its inhabitants with warm brick walls, spacious rooms, and clean lavatories. Although Ramsey mirrors Goshen and Tyson Halls, this dormitory has its own unique statute; its interior walls boast artwork of many previous boarders. TYSON Tyson Hall, the sister dormitory to Ramsey and Goshen halls is an eight-story co-ed dorm. Named for the 1922-1962 assistant English professor who was a pioneer in speech therapy, the building claims twelve Residence Hall Advisors, several Desk Assistants, a Resident Coordinator, and a Graduate Assistant. WAYNE Built in 1969, Wayne Hall was once an all-male dormitory. Now co-ed, Wayne represents a dorm that time has forgotten, famed for its petrified elevators and state-of-the-art indoor plumbing, when in operation. Located on the second and third floors of Wayne ' s nine stories are the offices which transferred from Recitation Hall, like the Criminal Justice,Nursing and Speech Communication Departments. It gives the student more freedom and a chance to make it on their own before going out into the real world. It also provides the atmosphere for a little looser life without your parents having to find out! All in all it sure beats living under a watchful eye! M. Named after the late George PhiHps, this huge structure contains offices as well as an auditorium and ballroom which come to life with dances, con- certs, and shows. This same auditorium holds special events such as December graduation and this year ' s Convocation ceremonies. Through its archway voices echo of both past and present. Some special facilities include the Planetarium and Observatory as well as laboratories and lecture halls. This building is also used as a meeting place for many clubs and organizations such as the Alchemist and Biology Clubs. ANDERSON HALL Many people believe Anderson Hall represents the most beautiful structure on campus. Originally known as a building for education majors only, it has in recent years expanded its curriculum to accom- modate not only future teachers, but also Mathematicians, Computer Scientists, Psychologists, and future business leaders. SWOPEHALL T ' jlft. Wm Strolling by Swope Hall one can hear the melodious sounds of the very talented West Chester musical com- munity. Built in 1960, Swope is named after past West Chester presi- dent, Charles Swope. The two level building also includes an auditorium where performances by faculty and students are held numerous times each week. OLDLIBML RT The Old Library was the original university Hbrary until 1966. Now its marble pillars and walls of literature have been converted to accommodate the many offices and classrooms located within. As the home of Anthropology and Sociology offices, the Old Library is located on the cor- ner of Church and Rosedale Avenues. Despite this building ' s archaic structure, its up-to-date facilities give rise to new ideas, theories and problems which probe the minds of students and teachers. 52 JONES The new and improved Ruby Jones Hall houses the Geography and Plan- ning, Political Science, and Criminal Justice departments. Until 1968, Ruby Jones was used as the demonstration school where local children would attend classes taught by West Chester student teachers. This past year WCU ' s community has been Ruby Jones being reconstructed and renewed while classes and offices moved to the second floor of Wayne Hall. Almost 88 years old, Ruby Jones lies in the heart of the campus where students can enjoy its home-like appearance. 53 E. O. BULL CENTER The Elizabeth 0. Bull Center, former- ly LRC, serves as the financial fortress of our fine institution. Ideally located a few miles from campus on the outskirts of the university, the Bull Center houses not only the academic offices such as registrar, Student Accounts and Finan- cial Aid, but also includes cultural aspects such as theater and entertain- ment classrooms. RECITATION HALL The 1986-87 academic year marks the third consecutive year that the Recitation Hall has been closed for renova- tion. Hopefully, with work finished on Ruby Jones, more emphasis can be placed on the reopening of classrooms in that serpentine stone building which stands close to Ander- son Hall. B 1 f-.. STKES UNION BUILDING The Sykes Union Building, dedicated to Dr. Earl F. Sykes on October 4, 1975, serves as a multi-purpose facility for facul- ty and students. Sykes houses important student organizations and services such as S.S.I. Bookstore, The Quad Newspaper, WCUR Radio, The Serpentine Yearbook and The Program Board. The duplicating center, information desk, check cashing services, ticket sales and deli are also under the same roof. With its lounges, meeting room facilities, and recreation activities such as Cheers, Sykes serves as the active center for the campus community. LAWRENCE CENTER More widely known as the cafeteria, Lawrence Center also houses the Post Office and Counseling Center, located on the second floor of the building. Although questionable edibles are produced from the mysterious kitchen, the cafeteria will be most noted for its long lunch lines and smiling staff. FRANCIS HARVEY GREEN LIBRAR Y IW !l I ? f in i:ii] )iiii . -■' . .T i II I ! ■. , . Perhaps the most frequently visited building on campus, the Francis Harvey Green Library stands six stories tall and contains many books, journals, magazines and documents. The library provides a peaceful study area with its sound proof study lounges, as well as offering a wealth of historic and modern infor- mation for interested readers. 59 MITCHELL HALL Mitchell Hall, better known as the fine arts building, houses WCU ' s artistically talented students. Its classrooms and galleries hold memories of the distinguished sculpters, painters and art historians that WCU has groomed in both the past and present. MAIJ HALL iwi www New Main Hall stands today where Old Main, a female dormitory from 1871-1971 once stood. Nestled between the Green Library and Philip ' s Memorial, this building pro- vides a comfortable setting for the studies of English, Foreign Language, Philosophy, Speech Communica- tion Theater and History. Main ' s auditorium is a familiar scene for summer orientation and University 101 which is a required course for all freshmen and transfer students. In one event held this year, Sigma Pi Fraternity not only aided victims of Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) but also launched what the brothers and sisters hope will become an annual tradition — The Lend-A-Hand Jam. Held in the ballroom of majestic Philips Memorial Building, the event entertained an ex- cited crowd for about five hours featuring three local bands and a disc jockey and all the hotdogs and soda you could eat at a minimal cost. All proceeds from ticket sales went to the M.S. Foundation while students rocked the night away lending a hand to those less fortunate who most often find it difficult to jam. Students grooved to the jams while some members of Sigma Pi, Don Foster, Judy Bowen, Ed Foster, Aaron Ad- dis, Gene Jones, and Pat O ' Malley collected the proceeds for M.S. Even the drummer shows his enthusiasm for the event. The music helped these two students lend a hand and have fun too. AIR BAND COMPETITION 1987 marked the third annual Airband Competition held at WCU. This yeai the audience was entertained by The Four Tops, The Temptations, Van Haler Grease, Prince and The Revolution, Simply Red, David Lee Roth, The Stones among other stars. Students participating in the competition must lip sync to a; | artist ' s song and every instrument must be hand made. Judges based their decilj sions on physical appearance, lip syncing, choreography, and audience response This year ' s winner was Prince and The Revolution, 2nd place was Grease, whil David Lee Roth placed third. The Show Must Go €n • • • And It Dees r : West Chester University theatregoers have been graced in the past with excellent entertain- ment and this year was no exception. Once again the University Theatre Department presented three remarkable productions — Marat Sade, The Birthday Party, and Hayfever all to the delight of the audience. WCU is one of the only universities in the area that uses only undergraduates in their productions, which ac- centuates the quality of students pursuing an ac- ting career at WCU. And, the box office sales prove it. Almost every show is sold out and waiting lists quickly develop for those who were unfortunate in obtaining a ticket. Behind the scenes is yet another excellent part of WCU Theatre. Under the direction of Wayne Merritt, students work endless hours building a set design that must be no less than perfect, and that it is when the curtain goes up. The actors and actresses at WCU find themselves adorned with detailed costumes and impeccable make-up which their fellow students bestow upon them, thanks to the direction of Yoko Hashimoto-Sinclair. Finally, the directors. Jay Berkowitz, Saundra Hall, Bob Bytnar, and Jane Saddoris all have one thing in common — their dedication to pa- tiently work with the students to produce their creations, no matter how many hours it takes and how much needs to be sacrificed, because they know that the show must go on. Judy Bowen ' J-.cacdfe5 ' Ki«fl« s.- ' - .. . t 86 The persecution and assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of the asylum ofCharenton under the direction of Marquis de Sade With over 30 cast members, Marat Sade opened on Thursday, November 6, 1986 literally behind bars. The stage design pro- vided an excellent setting for the play ' s philosophical message — Marquis de Sade ' s individualism versus the socialism of Jean Paul Marat in Paris 1808. Directed by Bob Bytnar, Marat Sade was chosen for the benefit of the educational experience of the cast, but it also educated the audience on the social and political climates of the time as well as providing an intense and moving drama. ? cfUAd ' Pantcf 89 THEATRE OF THE ABSURD INVADES WCU McCann and Goldberg from the organization per- sistently torture Stanley until his eventual brain- washing climaxes the play. February 19, 1987 set the stage for Harold Pinter ' s first full-length play where the audience got a taste of what Theatre of the Absurd truly means. Pinter ' s play has been called many things — an allegory of conformity, of death, of birth, or of both death and birth, but when the lights went down on opening night, the actors meticulously brought his comedy of menance to life. Directed by Saundra M. Hall, The Birthday Party captured a sense of the Unknown, subtly dropping hints that life is a mixture of comedy and absurdity, not always to be taken at face value. The symptoms: soreness of facial muscles due to constant smiling and sever stomach cramps caused by excessive laughing. The cure: repeated viewing of the University Theatre ' s presentation of Hay Fever until one is immune. Indeed, the final production of the year was a sure cure for end-of-the- semester blues — the only crying going on was from laughing a bit too hard at The Bliss Family and the four overnight guests. Directed by Jay Berkowitz, Hay Fever was a hit from opening to closing night, and the audience didn ' t sneeze once. •M The Cast Sorel Bliss Mary K. More people participate in club activities than anything on campus. N When in the course of yearbook events, it is necessary to meet deadlines, sort through endless photos, and conquer problems, it seems the editor ' s job is never done. But, finally I can enthusiastically say after three years as Editor- in-chief that my job is finished thanks to the ef- fort of five extremely dedicated students who understand the true meaning of perseverance. I can finally walk away knowing the yearbook is in good hands — something that in the past I could never do, although there were times I wanted to pack it all in. I want to extend a personal thanks to Emmy Phillips for your willingness to become a leader and for capturing the belief that ' s needed to be the future editor — to Mickey Kowitz for never complaining when I asked for one more event coverage and for your great photography skills and humorous candor — to Matt Reiprich for sticking with me on the staff for two years and for being a good friend. — to Cindy X. and Ra- que! for taking on Student Life and doing a great job with it — and to Dr. Robert H. Weiss for always believing in me when I told you it would be done. Thank you all for a great final year because through you I have restored my belief that there are dedicated students who sincerely want to pro duce a yearbook for the seniors and not just for the sake of putting it on a resume. Dr. Weiss — Advisor sorts through endless paper work 3K ( ioi ' i I wish all of you the best of luck for the ' 88 Serpentine and always remember that the yearbook is for students who have realized their dreams and made many sacrifices to obtain them, and it is your job to capture these achievements in one final publication.
