Vou order. Vou ujoit and uuoit and uuQit. Finally it arrives; the dinner you ' d rather eat than the one served tonight at the cof . Vou open the boi ond there it is; a circle of baked dough uuith tomato sauce and cheese and various other toppings (if you ' re in the mood) uuai- tlng for you to sink your teeth into. Vou inhale the uuhole thing, feel ulti- mately satisfied, and forever fat. Vou have just experienced TH€ PlZZfl SVNDROM€. €very student at least once in their college daze has experienced this syndrome. €ven if you hote pizzo or never tried it before college, the groddy food at the caf forces you to join your fel- louu upperclassmen in experiencing the delicious deli- cacy of the perfect pizza. Granted, pizza is no substitute for mom ' s home cooking, but it does outshine the cafeteria food most of the time. Rnd, if you think about it, a person ' s life is similar to o pizza pie. 6ach of us is mode up of slices of unique qualities. Did you ever notice that no toio pizzas ore ever the some? And, that each slice of a pizza has a different amount of sauce, cheese, and topping? UUe, OS students, are no differ- ent. Rll of us belong to various groups, hove our ouun opinions, and approach life in mony luoys. €very aspect of our life serves to moke up our uuhole person, and luithout one port, oie ujould not be complete, just OS a pizza is not a ujhole pie if a slice is missing. Fill of us do share something in common though. UUe belong to LUest Chester University of Pennsylvania. Our life here is mode up of slices ' ' each uuith unique characteristics. The intent of the ' 86 Serpentine is to point out some of these slices that fill up our lives. Rnd, let ' s face it, most of the time those slices ore pretty good. by Judy M. It is diffi- cult to pinpoint the exact location of these students, whose living arrangements range anywhere from room- ing houses to farm houses, but they tend to cluster in certain well known places. Ramsgate Apartments, South Walnut Street, Franklin Court and Wiltow Court are some of the places made up exclusively of a conglomeration of college students. Those who prefer off-campus living learn very quickly that wherever there exists a condition that creates a demand for living space, rent soars to a level just below what cannot be afforded. And isn ' t it pecu- liar that those landlords, whose presence around the first of the month is almost smothering, are so hard to contact in mid-month when, for instance, your water heater stops heating water? C ' est la vie! But, off-campus life surely beats the hustle and bustle and hassel of the infamous dormitory. 29 WALNUT ST. Walnut Street is the place to be if action is your middle name — that ' s what most upperclassmen experience here. Students enjoy the privacy of apartments situated in real houses on Walnut St. from the 600 block all the way down to the 200 block. Who can forget the Friday Afternoon Club (FAC) at 615 and Piggin ' at 210, not to mention 4 1 9 s gigantic get-to-gethers. And, the delicious food at Little Man ' s Deli. The scenic beauty of Walnut St. is only surpas- sed by the quality of upperclassmen who choose to make it their home away from home for two years. 11 4 imlk 1 1 ? L t 1 i .. -Hvp , J ' ' ' 30 The most infamous apartment complex off-campus in West Chester is RAMSGATE. There is always something going on here, whether it be friends chatting outside their doors, games of frisbee or football in the courtyard, or an all day night outside party where students can get together with neighbors and friends. The apart- ments may be a little cramped, but who cares? With neighbors all around, who has time to sit in the Ramsgate apartment all day? RAMSGATE 31 32 33 FRANKLIN COURT 34 35 36 -J - . ' .. European military and political machinations finally resulted in the assign- ment of the proprietorship of this area to En- gland, so when William Penn petitioned Charles II, in 1680, for a grant of land as pay- ment for a debt that the king owed his father ' s estate, Penn received rights to the tract he called Pennsylvania. When he came here to lay out the city of Philadelphia, he used Upland as his base since it offered an already settled community (the Swedes had stayed) , but he changed the name to Chester. He made Chester the county seat for all the land that he marked out — to extend even west of the Brandywine — and called it Delaware. It was the first county in our state. West Chester, aside from its background as a seat of justice, developed into a market center for the buying of farming needs and the selling of produce, for Chester County was a rich farming and dairying land. Its rural development paralleled that of farming communities all over our country during the nineteeth century. Today, very few farms remain. Much of the land has turned into housing developments, and Greater West Chester, the town and the surrounding townships, has become one large suburban mass to which people of all races move, in order to be near the industrial metropolises of Philadelphia and Wilmington. Citizens from far and wide no longer understand when they discover that this or that new housing development lies on some of the original Land Grants of William Penn. Most of the old Quaker names listed in the telephone directory seem lost among the multitudes of the new ones that have been added. William Penn would have undoubtedly understood this change and approved; he was that kind of man. 58 59 HISTORIC 8 JOSHUA GBBGNS. HOUSE ' -AVArLABLE FOR + RETAIL ' OFFICES INFORMATION + 436- R c-? WCUR like most campus organiza- tions is run totally by the students of West Chester University. Volunteers manage and operate all aspects of the station from obtaining advertise- ments, producing commercials, to ac- tually broadcasting. Currently the staff of WCUR is awaiting approval from The Federal Communications Commission in Washington for the construction of West Chester ' s first FM radio station. If all goes as expect- ed, WCUR will broadcast from 91.7 FM at 250 watts stereo. During the 1985-1986 school year, WCUR made much progress. Internally staff mem- bers worked on defining an estab- lished training program. It is hoped that this program will some day be ac- credited here at West Chester Univer- sity. In the community, WCUR ' s name was made visible through a number of newspaper articles inform- ing readers of WCUR ' s plans for FM status ... on campus, students and faculty participated in t-shirt, soda and pizza give aways. As a member of the staff of WCUR, it is necessary to join one of several committees. As a committee member, students find themselves designing promotional posters, producing sta- tion promotions, and writing news. The majority of WCUR staff mem- bers are speech communications ma- jors focusing on a career in broadcast- ing or the music industry. However students from all fields of study are encouraged to join. 108 ORGANIZATIONS ORGANI 109 ALPHA CHI RHO Officers of West Chester Uni- versity chapter, Spring, 1986. All of these fraternity members promote commu- nity service and since 1977, have been conducting a million-dollar fundrais- ing drive to benefit the National Ur- ban League, the NAACP. and the United Negro College Fund. Addi- tionally, the fraternity aids Black business development, works on youth development projects, and sponsors scholarship programs. The Zeta Psi chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded at West Chester on December 19, 1969, by six individuals and faculty advi- sors. Dr. P. Haggard and Joseph Bell. These gentlemen have initiated over 60 men since the chapter ' s founding. There are presently 6 active brothers on campus who stress that they are not only a service to the community and campus, but they are a service to themselves in that they stress aca- demics. They stand on a legacy of leadership: they stress values and ex- celling goals to form leaders to be pre- sented to society upon graduation. As for local community service, the brothers of the Zeta Psi chapter, along with 4 other fraternities, are sponsoring a basketball team of area high school boys coordinated by the Salvation Army. They also take part in service to the Day Care Center on campus, and the Special Olympics. Some of the proud leaders that have been breeded by the fraternity are Dr. Martin Luther King, Civil Rights Leader; Thurgood Marshall, Supreme Court Justice; and Jesse Ow- ens, 1963 Olympic Gold Medalist. EKS GREEKS GREEKS G 117 INTER-GREEK COUNCIL The Inter-Greek Council is the governing body of all fraternities and sororities on West Chester University ' s campus. Our main function is to establish and en- force policies concerning Inter- Greek Relations. As of Spring 1986, there are cur- rently eighteen organizations un- der the control of the Inter-Greek Council. These organizations are responsible for sending two repre- sentatives to Inter-Greek Council weekly meetings held every Thursday afternoon in Sykes Stu- dent Union Building. The meet- ings are run by the Executive Council which consists of the President, Vice-President, Trea- surer, Secretary of Correspon- dence and Records, a Service Coordinator, and an Activities Coordinator. Any member of the Inter-Greek Council can hold an Executive Council Position. The Inter-Greek Council also has a representative vote in the Intra- Collegiate Governmental Associa- tion. Every fall the Inter -Greek Council puts great time and effort into the Universities Homecom- ing festivities. This year ' s Home- coming was considered to be one of the best in a long while, and the Inter-Greek Council is proud that our Homecoming King and Queen candidates took first place. Al- most every fraternity and sorori- ty enters a float in the Homecom- ing Parade, which proves to be great fun and promotes healthy competition for all. In the Spring semester, all the fraternities and sororities put a lot of time and effort into our fa- vorite time of year, Greek Week. Greek Week is an entire week of competition between the fraterni- ties and sororities. A week full of activities is culminated by an awards banquet, the Greek Olym- pics, and the highlight of the week, our Greek Picnic. Besides all the fun and games, the Greek system as a whole, puts countless hours into many com- munity service projects. Every Fraternity and Sorority is dedi- cated to these projects and the In- ter-Greek Council is proud of all our accomplishments for the Greek System, the University and the community. ' Si ' - Wi BLAST FROM THE PAST BLOOMSBURG ONCE AGAIN FOILS WEST CHESTER ' S HOPES FOR PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE TITLE Bloomsburg once again ended West Chester ' s quest for a Pennsylvania Conference title and also ended the Rams ' sea- son as the Huskies defeated the Golden Rams 8-6 at Redmond Stadium, November 16th. It was the second year in a row for Bloomsburg to win the PSAC-East title game, ending the Rams ' season at 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference both years. Last year the Rams lost 34-31. At Bloomsburg, in a game played in icy, cold rain and mud, second year head coach Danny Hale ' s Golden Rams found it diffi- cult to hold onto the ball at crucial points. West Chester University ' s football team ended the season with the same record as last year: 7-1 overall, 5-1 in the Pennsylvania Conference. In a difficult assessment of the season, Coach Hale told the Daily Local News ' Cal Beam, We had a good, year. It ' s hard now, after the game, pondering the way we lost. If I had been offered the chance to be 7-3 at the beginning of the season I would have signed on the dotted line. At the beginning of the season, Coach Hale saw weaknesses in several areas, espe- cially the offensive backfield. The team had lost one of the college ' s best-ever running backs in Mike Irving and had also lost three- year veteran quarterback, Mike Horrocks. The only returning back was Mike Burnetta (sr., Cheltenham) . Veteran offensive tackle Gary Schippang (sr., Bethlethem) , 1985 team cap- tain, led the offensive line. An AU-American, pro-prospect. Schippang was honored by the Manwell Club during the year and had been visited by more than 30 pro scouts during the season. The linebacking corps, led by All-PSAC John Mininno (jr.. Laurel Springs, NJ) , WCU ' s leading tackier for three years, were solid, perhaps the best in years. Mininno was named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week three times. It was the defense that accounted for the Rams holding a solid lUP to only a 7-4 loss, and Delaware to a 37-22 loss. And al- though they beat Glassboro 30-17 and East Stroudsburg 1816, it was the defense that played the major role in the wins. It was not until Homecoming when the Rams beat Cheyney 13-0 that the offense be- gan to show signs of maturity. In that game. Coach Hale started for the first time tailback Jason Sims (so., Iselin, NJ) who rushed for 139 yards against one of the best defenses in the conference. Sims would average more than 100 yards per game until the end of the season. Also showing strong improvement were freshman quarterback Al Niemela (New Providence, NJ) and tailback Mike Burnetta (jr., Cheltenham) . as well as wide receiver Jim Sheehan (so., Philadelphia) and split end Bill Hess (fr., Allentown) . For the 37-17 win over Mansfield, Niemela was named PSAC-East Player of the Week as the Rams gained 432 yards. They then beat Millersville 21-17 and got set to play Bloomsburg for the PSAC-East title. Meanwhile, the Rams did what few ex- pected, beat Division I-AA Lehigh 20-17 on Parents ' Day. It was the highlight of the sea- son. When the season ended, the Rams showed up well in post-season honors. Al Niemela was named Eastern College Athlet- ic Conference Rookie-of-the-Year. Offensive lineman Gary Schippang was named an As- sociated Press AU-American Honorable Men- tion and was also named to the ECAC and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference first teams. It was Schippang ' s second year to be named an AU-American. Linebacker John Mininno also was named to both the ECAC and PSAC first teams. Also named to the PSAC first team were defensive tackle Bill Hendricks, defensive end Joe Ellis, and freshman punter Charlton Hollenbach. Named to the PSAC second team were offensive guard Jeff Locke, wide receiver Bill Hess, quarterback Al Niemela. running back Jason Sims and place-kicker Gerald Des- mond. 134 135 1985 FOOTBALL RESULTS wcu OPP 3 Indiana (P.A.) 7 30 Glassboro 17 16 Kutztown 8 22 Delaware 37 18 E. The group never expected to get as far into the competition as they did, not to mention win- ning it, because most of them entered it just for fun. The choreography was created by Lori Gla- dulich and Cindy Smith. The majority of the group members were residents of the fourth floor of Goshen Hall and they all agreed that could have never won the competition without the sup- port of the rest of their floor. The Wet Ones consisted of Lori Gladu- lich, Cindy Smith, Renee Stenson, Michelle Gero, Elisa Gill, Kym Grosso, Ellen Hannery, Sue Everett, Peggy Hatt, Pat Tryson, Walt Bloom, Tony Deremer, Scott Taylor, Mike Ta- keh, and Ralph Tamm.
