DISPLAY - SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ROOM WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY SERPENTINE 1985 This book is dedicated to IVIell Josephs, Director of Sykes Student Union. Not because she was there when we needed her: but, because she is there when anyone needs her. AND, to all those who still tilt at windmills, be- cause they might be giants. West Chester University (215) 436-2471 Dear 1985 Graduate: I am delighted to extend my personal congratulations on your graduation from West Chester University. Your achievement is one which required commitment, energy, and discipline. You are certainly entitled to take pride in what you have accomplished. I am confident you will continue to build upon the base you have established. While you are no longer a student at West Chester University, you will always be an integral part of the University community. We shall strive to keep you abreast of news from the campus and your classmates via Ramparts , the quarterly alumni newsletter. Also, I encourage you to return regularly to the University for Homecoming, Alumni Day, and other events. The welfare of the students who follow you and the continued strength of your Alma Mater depend to a large extent on the continuing interest of previous graduates. I urge you to participate actively in the West Chester University Alumni Association. Again, heartiest congratulations! I wish you the very best in all of your future endeavors. Sincerely, C- . Albert Camus 16 -J ■' 1 1 - n ll i p i 1 ' ps f Till m El .V4l Once an all-male dormitory, Wayne Hall was built in 1969. It is a dorm that time has forgotten — it is famous for its petrified elevators. Wayne features state-of-the-art indoor plumbing, when in operation. There are nine floors, and on the second floor there are Criminal Justice and Government Planning offices. Wayne is a co-ed dormitory that offers extra-curricular activities such as aerobics. Located on Rosedale Avenue, it stands between Killinger and Schmidt and near Sykes Union Building and the Admissions Office. As in every dorm, the residents are provided with recreational facilities in the recreation room, and a study room in the back lobby. 20 21 KILLINGER HALL The only 24-hour quiet dormitory on West Chester University ' s sprawling and picturesque campus is l nown as Killinger, the honors students ' ' den of iniquity. The honors students reside on the third floor of Killinger, and each floor has a male and female wing. Any of the dorm ' s shortcomings are compensated for by the lobby ' s exquisite decore — with couches and chairs that Ethan Allen would commend. Named in 1968 for Glenn W. Killinger, a renowned West Chester State College football and baseball coach, Killinger boasts a football-field-like basement that is used for meetings, dances, and aerobics. With only three floors, Killinger is the lowest dorm on campus. Ethnocentric residents, however, will echo the Russian saying that they oversee the world from the highest bell tower. 22 McCarthy hall I •  •• .r i y . { B If the family situation is your type of living, McCarthy dorm is the place for you. McCarthy consists of three floors — the first floor houses national and international exchange students. The second floor claims the regular crowd, and the third echoes mainly of graduate students and student teachers. McCarthy is a 24-hour quiet dorm, so if you just listen, the first floor is a great place to learn about many different cultures and customs. The second floor, which is largely inhabited by West Chester University ' s characteristic music majors, allows you to follow native customs; most who live there do so in typical West Chester student style. And by climbing just one more flight of stairs, you may be confronted by the older and wiser who are very helpful when you have questions on a particular subject. The 258-person population of McCarthy is a small one by West Chester dormitory standards, but actually it is just one big, friendly family. 24 25 RAMSEY HALL In contrast to dorms which some residents would label gray-aired, the Ramsey lobby desk sports a large, colorful banner naming Mike Renzi RA of the month for December (out of a possible ten RAs and eight DAs). Sprinkled around the lobby are signs declaring pizza sales, dorm-sponsored presentations (including November ' s ' Off-Campus Life and Time Management ), dorm council meetings, a Jail-In, and a certificate naming Ray Rocchio ' s first floor as the winner of the Family Feud Game, October 16, 1984. Ramsey has also sponsored Christmas caroling, a program on self-defense, a program by the registrar, and VCR nights. In time, an infirmary may be set up in the basement. Who knows what more there is to come? H i i 1 .1 ' A W 1 Mr ' 26 Ill m isi isi isi si 27 SANDERSON HALL On the south side of the campus you will find Sanderson Hall, located on South New Street. This prestigious facility features nine floors — three are all female and six are co-ed. Sanderson Hall was named for Christian Carmack Sanderson, and was built in 1970. Various activities are offered throughout the year at Sanderson: the annual Christmas Semi-Formal, the Spring Semi-Formal, pizza sales, aerobics, and dances. One of Sander- son ' s primary attractions is that it located nearest to Lawrence Center, otherwise known as the dining hall. The elevators in Sanderson are known to malfunction frequently and those who are weight-conscious resort to stair-climbing. Facts of life that prevail at Sanderson include loud music and the lack of quiet hours during finals week. For those who take a bus to South Campus, it is convenient for Sanderson students to wait on the corner of Rosedale Avenue and South New Street. Sanderson students always make their environ- ment a fun place in which to live. 28 A -a ji 1 r ' 29 SCHMIDT HALL 30 Schmidt is sandwiched between Wayne and Sanderson Halls, allowing its residents to claim that it com- prises all the good stuff between the bread. A tribute to outstanding music teacher and administrator Gertrude K. Schmidt, aerobic classes and organizational dances fittingly furnish the building with energetic sounds. Schmidt is the only all-female dorm on campus, and the residents of its eight floors may claim this as one of its strongest points. Those who live there are proud of the newest dorm on campus; it is noted for the immaculate maintenance of floors and elevators. Contemporary s tudents enjoy the study-inducing serenity of the eighth floor, and many females move there from other dormitories. Students since 1971, however, have enjoyed Schmidt ' s expansive view of the activities of North Campus. 31 TYSON HALL Located northwest of Lawrence Dining Hall is the S. Elizabeth Tyson Residence Hall, or Tyson, for short. The dorm, named for the 1922-1962 assistant English professor who was a pioneer in speech therapy, is a seven-floored building which claims twelve Residence Hall Advisors, seven Desk Assistants, a Resident Coordinator, and a Graduate Assis- tant. 32 33 GOSHEN HALL A geographically well-placed dormitory, Goshen features many of the advantages of on-campus life. Run by a competent resident staff, Goshen is the place to live. Considered by many as the social center of West Chester, Goshen is the place to go to know what is going on around West Chester! And its co-ed status certainly does little to inhibit social activities. The eight-floored hall is equipped with study areas, recreation facilities, and even food and beverage machines. When the weather permits, students can be seen playing outdoor games, studying, or just lying in the sun on Goshen ' s huge front yard. Goshen is just minutes from anywhere on campus, but really, where else would you want to go? 34 DORM LIFE R. A. ' s . . . Trying to sleep at 3 a.m., trying to stay awake and study at 3 am ... water fights . . . going to the cafe . . . going home on weekends . . . realizing that you know the other 72 people that live on your floor . . . knowing that your roomate has a 7:00 class, on Friday, when you don ' t have one till 2:00 . . . Forgetting your key . . . trying to get your mailbox open . . . cold showers all the time . . . yelling flush . . . trying to find change . . . hall parties . . . phone calls when you ' re sleeping . . . waiting to use the phone . . . getting ready to move off campus . . . But, boy, didn ' t we have fun. 35 OFF-CAMPUS When you hear the words campus life, what do you think of? If you are like many people, you will think of things such as the dorms, the cafeteria, or the noise. But to many college students thes e things are not a part of college life. These students are participants in the game of off-campus life. Students who live off campus usually do so by choice and, for this reason, find off-campus life great. One off-campus student feels that living off campus is more like a home away from home ' than the dorms. Many students choose to move off campus to have more freedom and to escape some of the restrictions of home or dorm life. Also, being in your own home gives you a chance to experience the responsibilities of the real world. There are, however, a few disadvantages to moving off campus. One of the biggest drawbacks is finances. One student said: ' It ' s great, but expensive. Entertainment expenses get cut when the financial situation gets tight, but if you start looking for a home soon enough you can probably find one to fit your budget. And with this new-found freedom comes responsibilities such as paying bills, paying rent, and buying and making your own meals. Though off-campus students have access to all of the campus facilities, they are not always as informed or up-to-date on special bulletins and events as on-campus students are. One thing that should be kept in mind is . . . yes . . . roommates. A good or bad roommate may make or break off-campus life for you. Take some advice, make sure that you know your roommate, and make sure that you can live with him or her. Moving off campus is not an easy task. But if you feel that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you are willing to put a little effort into finding a nice, affordable house or apartment, then you may find yourself in a home away from home. 36 37 38 COMMUTERS 39 ■Pr . Sykes on October 4, 1975, serves as a multi-purpose facility to faculty and students. Sykes houses important student organizations and services such as the I.G.A., the bookstore, the campus new spaper, WCUR radio, and MJ ' s Campus Deli. The duplication center, information desk, check cashing services, ticket sales, and Program Board Office are all under one roof. With its lounges, meeting room facilities, and recreation activities such as Cheers II, Sykes College Union Building serves as the meeting place for the campus community. 45 Whether for study, research, or relaxation, FGH is familiar to every West Chester University student. Due to the addition of the six-floored complex in 1976, the building is now able to hold fifty thousand books and approximately 2500 journals. Each floor contains large study tables, and the first and second floors offer comfortable chairs for reading and relaxing. A frequently-visited area, the Francis Harvey Green Library is indispensable to any student ' s college experience. FRANCIS HARVEY GREEN LIBRARY 48 49 RECITATION For all of you who ever wondered where the name of this book comes from, no it has nothing to do with Roger ' s pet, it comes from the funny looking green stone which Recitation is made from. It ' s Serpentine stone and one can only find it in Chester Country. So believe it or not. Recitation was closed again last year and it is beginning to look like students will never know what it looks like on the inside. It looks great, believe it or not. :f ] ' iV i II i ' lii III II II II 11 p . Ill mwr !!!! - I r., , ' SPECIAL EDUCATION The Special Education building might be the smallest building on the campus: but, the students which go into it stand as tall as anyone. For there is truly something divine about their chosen profession, which is to help all those not only to grow and learn but also to love. Do you love? ,.±. 50 RUBY JONES Once upon a time Ruby Jones was the demonstra- tion school and students teachers from WCU didn ' t have that far to walk. Then this 86 year old building housed the Geography and Planning, Political Science, and Criminal Justice depart- ments. Now it ' s closed and those classes are being taught in Wayne which used to be a dorm. Hey! it still is. Don ' t ask, it ' s West Chester. ANDERSON HALL Anderson is that nice old neat building that houses all those wonderful computers. You know those funny things which one day will replace all of us in the job market. And, Anderson is also home to the Psychology Dept., where students learn that the only thing that counts is what on the inside. The human heart, which a computer will never figure out, and who would want it to. Unplug those things and think and feel, it ' s what makes us human. 51 MAIN HALL Who says that liberal arts majors aren ' t as well-equipped to deal with the practical world? When was the last time that you walked into Main Hall and knew which way to turn? Remember — it was a minute to your twelve o ' clock class, and you were running from floor to floor in academic frenzy. What if I miss my class, you panicked. Then, you thought, I won ' t be able to cut on Friday. Flinging open the doors on each floor, you were confronted with identical double elevators that stared threateningly. The bright yellow room to the right beckoned, Here, over here! I ' m English 121. The bright yellow room to the left also insisted, NO, No, over here. I ' m, English 121! You tried to ask directions from the others who seemed late, but all you could find were language, literature, speech communications, and philosophy majors and none of them made any sense. The Honors Program Office on the first floor confused you even more. At least the building is easy to find. Located on High Street next to Philips Auditorium, the former girl ' s dormitory has become the New Old Main, a building of study. 52 MITCHELL HALL Mitchell Hall, one of the most recent North Campus additions, is recognized more by the title Fine arts Bundling . It acts as both workshop and showplace for student sculptors, painters, and art historians, housing daily classes, art worl shops, and exhibitions of student talent. Located on Church Street between McCarthy Hall, where many foreign exchange students reside, and Swope Hall, the music building, Mitchell Hall is in the center of West Chester University ' s cultural district. 53 SOUTH CAMPUS WARM-UP The three-quarter mile, hilly South New Street stretch between the North and South campuses must have been planned - it poses a greater challenge to those who regularly run to South Campus athletic facilities. For students who are hurried or have been blessed with an incongruous South Campus English class, buses run for them every ten minutes. Little do they know that once inside the facility, exercise is imminent. Finding a class in the huge, nationally- known Health and Education Center may itself demand mental and physical endurance. But to truly feel the atmosphere of South Campus, it is necessary to experience it all — the classrooms, the practice fields, the tennis courts, and the John A. Farrell Stadium. That means covering about 291 acres. Now that ' s a warm- up! SOUTH CAMPUS 54 ' - ♦ • . The Alumni House can also be rente d by private groups and other organizations for meetings or parties. It is located behind Sykes College Union Building. LAWRENCE HALL Lawrence Hall, is really not a hall at all. It is the place where we eat, and then wish we didn ' t. It ' s the place we get and send our mail. And, is the home of the Women ' s Center and the Counsel- ing Center. 56 57 SWOPE HALL SWOPE HALL Those who can create something out of nothing stand next to the angels. And, so Swope Hall is a heaven that seems somehow misplaced. Every and all kinds of music can be heard coming from this flat building located on Univer- sity Avenue. Strangely, not one musical note ever sounds bad. Not enough of us have spent the time in the halls of Swope because Fame had nothing on those music majors of West Chester Univer- sity. Swope Hall is truly the sweetest sounding building on campus. ir ' Ci t I k ' H . H HH I i V - . - i l ' ' H H . IK:! To go to class, you must pass through its huge, plantation-like columns and up the stairs to the second floor, but to find the offices, and film and record library of Chester County, you must pass through the back doors and up more stairs to reach the first floor. And finally, if one wants to locate the Duplicating Center (mostly used by the administration) its through the front again and down the stairs. Nonetheless, The Old Library is the home of Anthropology and Sociology — the complex study of human beings in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Maybe it is for this reason that the most complex building houses one of the most complex area of studies, the human being. OLD LIBRARY r r ■■' Hs -■' ■1 ;t hiij I -■■i Li a1 ' N y u J 1 1 PHILIPS MEMORIAL BUILDING is the grand old man on campus. Through its mystical arches, you can find the President ' s office and various other administra- tive offices. It also houses a library, the scene of frequent gatherings. The auditorium and ballroom come to life with dances, concerts, and shov s ranging from 50 ' s music, to The Hooters, to W.C.U. ' s annual convocation. Every student at least once during their years at West Chester, has whispered into one side of an arch and had their fellow student hear their words on the opposite. It is rumored that every year on the anniversary of George Philips ' death, Philips Memorial Building ex- tends its magical towers and arches to remember him with the faint scent of roses rising gently through the air of the building, like the smell of scented soap on the hands of a grand old man. P H I L I P S 61 SCHMUCKER SCIENCE CENTER SCHMUCKER SCI- ENCE CENTER is the place to be if you are a Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Astron- omy, Geography, or Pre- med major. Other fellow students have cluttered the halls in pursuit of passing three of these science courses for a general educa- tion requirement. Schmucker has two phases I and II where the future scientists and doctors can be found experimenting with chemicals, masses, densities, and examining human and animal parts, rocks and the earth ' s sur- face. And finally, the planetarium and observatory are visited daily by students reaching for the stars for their college degrees. 62 LEARNING RESEARCH CENTER THE LEARNING RE- SEARCH CENTER is notori- ous for its long lines leading to Student Accounts, the Regis- tar ' s Office, and frequently to the Financial Aid Office every semester. The Computing Center, The Turk ' s Head Play- house, and other offices are located in this building at the corner of Rosedale and High Sts. Behind LRC, one can see the swing flags of W.C.U. Marching Band during the fall, and intramural sports in the spring. The parking lot is also a place of much activity as commuters hunt ravishly for a par- king spot. ir 1 63 64 j T SiSfe 66 . ZWEIGLE, LYNN DEE West Chester, PA. 290 291 292 SENIORUS COLLEGUS EXODUS Seniors graduate with the regularity of lemmings each year. Like the millions of rodents that predictably participate in the mysterious mass exodus that takes them across thousands of miles, seniors must reach the cliff and keep on going . . . The students tunnel through years of books, scamper across miles of rough college terrain, mold themselves into a resume, and fling themselves onto the pile. The senior year then, inseparable from the com- mencement ceremonies, is routine to all but those involved. Students have already bought the newest edition of Dressed for Success and have wholehear- tedly invested in its remedies. But there is the side effect: The senior may experience both confusion and a strange sense of relief, combined with an acute sense of the immediateness of the present and the reality of the future. One study, which strove to define the expectations of college consumers, interviewed graduates seven years out of college. It found that most anticipated the development of my abilities to think and express myself in return for their efforts. But just at a time when the prospective graduate feels that the apex of self- expression should be most evident, someone asks, What are you going to do after graduation? Your heart races. You have been reading graffiti on the desk, hoping for an answer to life in the nooks and crannies. What am I going to do after graduation? You think to yourself, You mean there ' s something after gradua- tion? The thought is a new one and is much more unnerving than the previous expectation of total nothing- ness. I ' m not ready for a career, you try, I ' d like to travel, try a few different jobs, see the world ... You trail off, a picture of thousands of lemmings with passports invades your mind. Unconvinced. You receive the stare of one eyeing a seasoned bum that missed the boat to happiness and success. Well, I have a few things in mind — , you add, politics interest me and I have a background in retail merchandising. You demonstrate your knowledge of the active and passive voices. Still nothing. I am going to be a person, you blurt boldly, and then you chastise yourself for saying such a stupid thing. Your companion is suddenly greatly impressed, and you are becoming increasingly confused. But in an environment in which college-resistant friends are looking at their first houses and buying second cars, and in which we are told that diplomas are obsolete, that there will certainly be nothing available in our fields or any fields, it is not surprising that we expect something more for our money. There may be other places to learn how to learn, to study, and to live, but there are few other places for this studying together which has formed these particular past four years. It is an irreplacable place, one in which we have chosen friends on the basis of things other than their grades, their futures, or their vocations. In his 1837 address to the Cambridge University graduating class, Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested just this wholistic view of people — people looking to their sources instead of becoming their professions. Seniors may remember college as the chance to find and become their bests, and to know that our experience at West Chester University has taken us much past the color of our graduation gowns. by Laurie McKee afse: 4 .-t«s%- ■-iCf ' lFa., t ' ' I • 293 294 1 1 1 ' ' 295 297 298 299 IHpi i 1 ■% o 300 301 ONE LAST LOOK 302 AT WEST CHESTER 303 TO THOSE WHO HAVE WALKED THROUGH THIS ARCH, MAY HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS FOLLOW YOU ALWAYS.
