It is a blend of the old and the new. Some buildings have been named after past contributors to the school, others have been named for traditions dating back to the days of dress codes, curfews, and single-sex dorms. This campus has grown from a few buildings scattered on farmland into a thriving college community con- sisting of 14 lecture halls on 385 acres of land. 95 acres make up North Campus and 290 make up South. One can only wonder how all of this will change in another 172 years. i -WW - - d . --- ! ' V 1 W rm 1 £ ' - r ' ji 1 : jfii - .rafi  ( •, -. i£ fe? ' .J . rr j ' P i :5(V ■ r . T!Ntew. i JIIB Life at West Chester used to mean living in a college dorm, being in those dorms by 10:00 pm and not being allowed to mingle with the opposite sex. Times change and rules change. Today students live in many different places, with many different lifestyles. Some of us live in dorms, some off-campus, and others choose to stay home and commute. Some of the places we live in are small and neat, others are large and messy; some of us live a quite life, others noisy and crowded. No matter ho we live or where, we are all members of the com- munity of West Chester and will be part of it forever. Good memories never fade. And aren ' t you glad we can mingle today? PARENT ' S DAY Parent ' s Day gave moms and dads the chance to see the campus and meet the ad- ministration first hand. The day began at Sykes where different groups and depart- ments had displays. The rainy day and a loss to Millersville in football were disap- pointments, but spirits were picked up by a student talent show and a special dinner for parents and students. The highlight of the day was being served coffee by Presi- dent Dr. Ken Perrin as the guests waited for dinner. CONVOCATION CEREMONIES Proclamation ceremonies were held In the Quad where the carillon and Dr. Kenneth Perrln, first President of West Chester University Ave. were accepted by the University. University professors adorn academia robes during tion ceremonies. Dr. Perrln leads convocation ceremonies. Convocation ceremonies were held in October to celebrate the change from WC State College to West Chester University. High- lights of the celebration Included the dedication of the monument on the corner of High and Rosedale avenues, the burial of the student time capsule to be opened In 25 years, and the dedication of the car- illon located in Anderson Hall which rings every hour. University officials cut and serve a 10-foot-long University cake. 1 r r 6 fi 1 1 III iJi ' ■ ' 1  . • ■ ■ii ' ■ , ' ,, ir ii c B D ™ it ii!3 D- i WAYNE Wayne Hall is a nine floor co-ed dorm. Its south side faces Rose- dale Ave. while the north side residents enjoy the view of the intramural field and the three north-side dorms. SCHMIDT Schmidt is the newest dorm at West Chester. It is the only all female dorm on campus. wM t l 5 7 i 1 5! ' SANDERSON V Sanderson, once an all female dorm changed to co-ed in 1988 with two all male floors. It is well known for having the worst ele- vators service on campus. GOSHEN Goshen is the first of the triple towers on the north side of cam- pus. The main advantage of this dorm is its extensive front yard used as baseball, football, ultimate frisbee field, beaeh and snowball fight battle field. « )l H RAMSEY Ramsey is a co-ed dorm, one of the three located on Sharpless Street. f P ' : McCarthy McCarthy, one of the quietest dorms on Sharpless Street, be- gan in 1983 to house student teachers, honor students, and the national student exchange program. -J1I 1 TYSON HALL CHEERS II Cheers II, created by Mike Green of the counseling center, put together by Mell Josephs, with entertain- ment from the Program Board, became the first non- alcoholic club in the area. Each Thursday night a part of Sykes becomes Xanadu. n 9 - OFF CAMPUS Frustrated with the limitations of dorm life, fed-up with squeal- ing freshmen and sick from caf food, or maybe the desire for in- dependence , many students choose to live off-campus . The neighborhoods near the Univer- sity are the homes for hundreds of college students. Houses have taken on names, Yoder House, Football House, Huey House, and many have been designated as party houses . Surrounding apartment complexes have been virtually taken over by students — Franklin Court and the off- campus party center, Ramsgate. Living off campus a student can gain independence and skills — cooking, cleaning. No more col- lect calls home, the phone is in your name now. . . independence! 368 SEPTA f mi Commuters are a special breed of people. Among other things they must be patient: when following someone going 25mph when they are 5 miles from campus a minute before class; they must be dev ous: knowing where the last open legal parking place is and how to get to it first. They are also toler- ant: traveling to and from bus and train stations through rain and snow — over those rickety brick sidewalks, just to make class on time ... a special WC student. -i..JJ ' J.ii|l illplliliiwyJ| Jll 4 SYKES STUDENT UNION This building serves manj ' functions for West Chester stu- dents. It is a place for commuters to study and rest. It also supplies many forms of entertainment with a TV room, game room, and the new video den. Students may also relax with a meal from the dell, or with munchies from the Sweet Shop. The second floor of Sykes is the location for the of- fices of the student affairs divi- sion of the college. The newest addition to Sykes Student Union is Cheers II, the non-alcoholic bar. And, of course, all students are familiar with the IGA book store. This facility not only pro- vides students with text books, but also with personal supplies, food, clothes, cards and gifts. An- other common memory of Sykes will probably be the line of Fri- day afternoon to cash checks for the weekend. Above Old Library there is a say- A true University is a collec- tion of books . If this is true, and it must be, then all accumulative knowledge which is needed to help us through our college career is lo- cated in the Francis Harvey Green Library Other than the large selec- tion of books, the library also stocks a large government docu- ment section, as well as available audio visual equipment, and a spe- cial collections room which relates the history of the college and the achievements of its members. 52 Green Library LAWRENCE Known fondly to WC students as the Caf , Lawrence center Is famous for its questionable edibles, pleas- ant atmosphere and friendly service. More realistically it is known as the dinner-hour place for socializing and scoping. The Post Ofnce on the 2nd floor of Lawrence offers services to all of WC campus. «l« 1 :W EHINGER GYM Ehinger gym, another of WC ' s aging buildings, underwent re- pair throughout the ear. Before South campus was constructed Ehinger was used for sport ac- tivities and g ' m classes. Until its closing for repair it continued to be in constant use for many intra- mural sport events. HOLLINGER FIELD HOUSE HoUinger Field House is the large athletic facilitj ' located on north campus. It includes a weight room, boxing ring, courts and an indoor track and pool. West Chester ' s basketball and track teams have succeeded in many victories in this building. The Old Library was the new library of West Chester until 1966. Its marble pillars and walls of literature have been con- verted to accomodate the many offices and classrooms located within. Along with the duplicat- ing center and EMS, the Sociolo- gy Anthropology departments are located here. It is another of the buildings on the Register of Historic Places. OLD LIBRARY SCHMUCKER Schmucker Science Center houses all of the s ciences of VC, along with their many museums and special equipment. The fa- miliar BIO loo and memorizing atomic tables. Geology and exam- ining rocks, and the observatorj ' for Astronomy are all located in these buildings. PHILIPS On March 11, the day George Philips died in 1920, the building is known to smell of roses, even 57 years later. This gothic struc- ture holds many offices, such as the President, Provost, and busi- ness offices. Located also in this building is Philips Library; with Its domed, sculptured ceiling, book-lined walls, and red velvet decor, it is a familiar meeting place for honor society ceremo- nies, seminars, conferences and faculty activities. Philips audito- rium is used for the Friday Night Movie, theatre and dance produc- tions, concerts, lectures and spe- cial events such as December graduation and this year ' s Convo- cation ceremonies. ' m NEW MAIN HALL New Main Hall stands today where Old Main, a female dorma- tory from 1871 to 1971 once stood. Within its walls are the Foreign Language, Philosophy, English, Speech Communication Theatre and History departments. New Main auditorium is used weekly for the Free Wednesday Night Movie and daily for classes, spe- cial lectures and seminars. LRC The Learning Resource Center, on the corner of Rosedale and High Streets, houses a variety of different services offered to West Chester students. It is frequented by students using the computers, by students and visitors to see performances in the Turk ' s Head Theatre, and by the hundreds of students each semester to see the registrar and accounts payable offices. The lines for drop add are known to run the length of the building, both inside an d out. And, of course, anxious seniors flow, fingers crossed, to the graduation office. RESITATION The first of the buildings to un- dergo renovations, Hesitation was closed for the majority of the ' 84 school year. The serpentine stone structure, which houses the nursing and tutorial depart- ments, is one of West Chester ' s buildings on the National Regis- ter of Historic Places. ANDERSON Anderson Hall may be an old structure itself, but its halls are filled with new technology. From the ground to the top floors com- puters arc located throughout. The classes are filled with eager Business, Mathematlc, Educa- tion, Economic and Psychology students striving for their com- petitive degrees. Until 1968 Ruby Jones was used as the demonstration school where local children would attend classes taught by WC student teachers. Today the 85 year old building is the loca- tion for the Geography and Plan- ning, Political Science, and Criminal Justice departments. RUBY JONES SPECIAL EDUCATION The Special Education building is a small structure tucked be- tween Ehinger and Schmucker. In this building WC ' s Special Education students, still a popu- lar major, have their classes and activities. SWOPE The halls of this academic building are filled with the sounds of busy classwork — not the 3R ' s, but with music. Swope Hall, named after past WC presi- dent Charles Swope, was built in 1960. The two level building is the home of WC ' s famed Music department. It also includes an auditorium where performances by faculty and students are held numerous times every week. This year Swope was also the stage for a number of outside greats, such as Buddy Rich and violinist Frances Fortier. MITCHELL One of the newest academic buildings, this hall houses the art department. Its walls and gal- leries are adorned with art work of known artists and the work of West Chester students. ' ' J SOUTH W South Campus provides facili- ties for the needs of many stu- dents. Other than the huge Health and Physical Education Center which houses, among oth- er things, swimming pools, weight rooms, gyms, and class- rooms; there is also Parrel Stadi- um where many fans have cheered on various sports teams to victory. South campus also has many tennis courts, baseball fields and soccer fields, and a large natural wildlife preserve. HEALTH ANDT PHYSICAL J L Because the drinking age in PA is 21 many of us were legalh ' limited to our choice of social hot-spots lu? nior or senior vear. Ah but then . . . The Rat was usually first choice — walking distance and a good croA ■ : Rat featured Mondav night football specials (even off-season), a relaxing atmosphere Tuesday and Wednesua nights for an after-night class-cocktail, and the traditional WC weekend bash beginning Thursday night. We ' ll remember the Rat too for their pizza and other snacks, senior parties, and opening at 7am on graduation morning to help us celebrate. We of course share many memories, specials and celebrations with the other establishments shown on these pages-, dance parties at the Caberet, big-screen sports at the Courtyard, and ain prices at Jakes. W e all share memories and within the walls of these places will remain a part of the of ' 84. SPRING WEEKEND Once again the Program Board and IGA provided us with a fun- filled Spring Weekend. Activi- ties included Casino Xight in Sykes. bringing Atlantic City a little closer to home, competi- tion between dorms in Almost Anything Goes Games, and the outdoor picnic and concert. For the second year in a row the weekend started out with some excitement, last year a fire in Lawrence, this year in KilHnger. Despite the bad start Spring Weekend was again great fun!! Many faculty members, along with administra- tion wore academic robes as the procession filled the auditorium. During the ceremony degrees were presented and conferred, Marine and ROTC trainees were commis- sioned. Speeches were made by James Brett Taylor on behalf of the Baccalaureate candidates and by IGA President James Catanese. The kej ' note speaker for the 1984 Graduation Ceremonies was Shirley Chisholm. It illustrates only part of 1983-84, but we attempted and we hope that it is a fair represen- tation of everyone ' s memories. No one person is responsible for any part of this book. The work was completed through the coopera- tion of many people and could not have been completed without them — unfortunately, these people often go unnoticed. I would like to take this opportuni- ty to notice and to thank them. Thank you, to all who worked on the staff during the year, and to Dr. Robert Weiss, for your commitment to the book. To clubs, teams and organizations, for the cooperation given throughout the year, especially to the Program Board and to the Quad. Thank you, Mr. Nevin Mor- ris for your assistance with the sports section. And to my toler- ant friends and family for listen- ing and for caring. Most of all, thank you to the many people at Nichols Assoc. Inc. — George and Dian, for hav- ing the confidence In me that I did not. Thanks to all, to West Chester
