From where it was... to where it ' s af i h( c hoys here arc pretty good fellas. We ' ve had a few had ones over the years hut not too many. The words and face of Mrs. Roland McClintock who with her husband has been run- ning a men ' s off campus home for almost as long as she can remember. i 958— Slater is here! The new mas- cot is Prince Ramses I. When not at the games, he is kept on a farm near Dovvningtown with his 26 wives. No wonder he always looks so tired. On the funny side, West Chester was removed from the AAUP censured list after nineteen years, an all-time record. 1960-in April, State Troopers rushed to the site of Old Main to quell a potentially dangerous panty raid. 7963— Dr. Earl Sykes was inaugu- rated President of the college. The Quad carried an editorial concerning the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Lyndon B. Johnson became President. 7964— Lyndon B. Johnson became Chairman of the Board of the Southeast Asia Escalator Company. Dr. Sykes literally destroyed the State ' s practice of favoring private cblleges over the State-owned schools. His research finally caused Governor Scranton to admit that the State colleges have been neglected. Help was on the way. Also in 1964, the infamous Cap Crew blos- somed into the most beloved and adored group since the Mongol Horde. 7965-WCSC broadcasts from cam- pus. A movement begins to reexamine student rights. The Masked Phantom circles one of the girls ' dormitories in his birthday suit. The game ' s object was for the girls to guess who it was. U.S. troops invaded the Domin- ican Republic. 7966— Five new buildings were ded- icated: Lawrence, Schmuck- er, the Library, Tyson and C oshen. Students demanded rights as the cut system and the dress code thing popped up. Christian Sanderson ' s will stated that the Andrew Wy- eth portrait of Mr. Sanderson would be given to the college if the front of Old Main wasn ' t torn down. Anybody seen that picture? 7967— Greeks and Freaks emerged on campus. We began to look like something other than a high school with ash trays. 7969— The controversy over the se- lection of a new President woke everyone up at West Chester. Men ' s Resident Gov- ernment attacked the Admin- istration, and the IRISH wanted the Alma Mater changed to When Irish Eyes are Smiling. i970-The Board-Rossey-IGA- D ' Antonio-Owens contro- versy . . . As Dr. Sturzebecker aptly states— The West Chester Normal School Centennial story started with a can- non, and appropriately, on the threshold of a .second hundred vears, a new cannon comes on the Remember the Main! it

As some of you may know, this is West Chester ' s Cen- tennial year One hundred years of exis tence. Anything that hangs around that long surehj must have a lengthy, if not interesting, heritage To capsulize such a history is harder than capsulizing six hundred tiny time pills If you want to play M est Chester trivia, buy Dr. Sturze- heckers hook. It ' s quite good, humorous, interesting, and tediously detailed But the 1972 Serpentine cannot go into such a treatment of every year. All we can do is cover 1972 and show you a few old pictures that say, This is West Chester when it tvas six years old. But because you are so nice, and because our business manager says we can afford it, and because my Editor-in-Chief made me do it, the 1972 Serpentine proudly presents Highlights of our Heritage. This supplement records events of major significance in the growth of this university. I mean, college So, unless you kept a diary, this will help you remember when . . . 187I TH:E CrNTiiNNlAL y£All I97I
