DR. EARL SYKES, president Enjoying a delicious Slater meal. Dr. Sykes participates in one of the more pleasant aspects of his responsibilities as college president. r Dr. and Mrs. Sykes take a great interest in the cultural programs pre- sented at West Chester. Here they are attending an I.G.A. assembly. Having been a member of West Chester ' s administrative staff for about twenty years, Dr. Earl F. Sykes, after a year as Acting President, was appointed President of West Chester State College on August 9, 1962. Dr. Sykes was giaduated from Montana State University, where he obtained a B.A. in Social Studies and an M.A. in Educational Administration. Dr. S ' kes then proceeded to earn liis Doctorate in Educa- tional Administration of both public schools and colleges at Columbia University Teachers ' College. Because of the positions Dr. Sykes has held at West Chester prior to his appointment as President, such as Acting Dean of Men, Di- rector of Placement, Supervisor of Student Teaching, and Dean of Academic Affairs, he is most capable of understand- ing problems at any level. In his official capacity as Chief Administrator of the college. Dr. Sykes ' s duties are many and varied. In addition to his responsibilities in direct- ing all administrati e affairs, he is often called upon to officiate at various collegiate activities and thus plays an active role in student affairs. Dr. Sykes ' s untiring efforts to improve all aspects of college life render him a man most worthy of his high position at West Chester State.

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Left: Mr. Emil H. Messiko- mer, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and below, his as- sistant, Mr. Robert R. Shine- house. These two capable men have charge of all students ' many academic prob- lems, which include such mat- ters as scheduling, credits, available courses, and grades. Left: Mrs. Helen E. Shippee, Registrar. This efficient lady is responsible for maintaining all college transcripts and sending out all references. Her capability is most evident and is a necessity to her position. Right: Dr. Kenneth C. Slagle, Dean of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Slagle is in charge of the Liberal Arts program at West Chester, which has been expanding quite rapidly in recent years. Students who are in this curriculum may major in the Humanities or the Sciences or mathematics. Right: Mr. Robert Reese, Director of Athletics. Su- pervising the entire ath- letic program at West Chester, Mr. Reese ' s many duties include pro- viding equipment for the teams, arranging trans- portational facilities, thus aiding avid spectators. Left: Dr. Tally, Acting Director of Stu- dent Teaching. Dr. Tally is in charge of placing senior education majors in student teaching positions and of ad- vising student teaching supervi.sors. Be- cause student teaching is vital to edu- cation, his position is most essential. Right: Dr. William Houpt, Director of Public Relations. Dr. Houpt is responsible for maintaining West Chester ' s reputation as a highly ranked Pennsylvania State College. Among his contributions to the college was the invaluable as- sistance he gave to the Junior Show. Far left: Dr. li. Paul Ross, Director of Admissions and left, his assistant, Mr. R. Godfrey Studenmund. Determining which persons are acceptable as future West Chester students is the job of these two discrimi- nating individuals. Their job of selection and placement is difficult. 22
