It is not a face of memory, nor an inclusive eye into the past. Neither does it exist for itself, nor by virtue of the events pictured and described here. It exists solely because there were people in 1962 who had interests: the arts, drama, athletics, scholarship. The book is not a tribute to these people: interested persons are a monument to themselves. Rather this is an account, a journal of many of the events, including the names and faces of participants. It was the purpose of the staff to catch the immediacy — the spontaneity — of the activity. • ? OVE .-• Nd e Rc S S E s , f 2 CO LU I In the wee hours of the morning a clacking typewriter is heard echoing from unlikely places. After learning that procrastination does not pay, this industrious freshman has sought refuge to complete an over-due assignment. mm f .a cl ww em ..... . 18 n me traditional tug of war during Frosh Regs, the upper classmen feel the impact and might of the incoming freshmen. The contagious spirit of these freshmen is exceeded only by the physical strength of the veterans. Freshman class officers: President Ron Strawley, Treasurer Carol Speck, Vice- President Karen Sallinger, and Secretary Susan Crumbley have aided the class of ' 65 in its early years, establishing it as a contributing segment of the student body. Characterized by youthful faces filled with anticipation and excite- ment, a body of Freshmen some 406 members strong descended upon our campus. In short time this group united itself and began to assume its position in campus life. Involuntarily joining in Frosh Regs the Freshmen overcame their first obstacle and bounced back for more. Rampage Week- end provided the first chance for the Class of 65 to demonstrate their abilities. Their contributions to this weekend marked the beginning of many equally successful endeavors on the part of the class. lMG Frosh Regs were a grueling test of endurance for the Class of ' 65. Catching our Frosh in moments of madness and mirth — to the victor go the spoils and to the others, someone ' s shoe. With a year s experience behind them, our Sophomores rallied to launch a year of bustling activity. First was ' September Song, a welcome back dance which provided an evening of enjoyment for all those returning to our campus for another year of study. Publicity for Rampage Weekend was handled in grand style by the diligent Sophomores. Joining in all phases of college life, the Class of 64 made its presence felt in practically every club and organization and at all social and academic affairs. The Sixty-fours toiled many hours to polish and perfect their Sophomore Show. This smashing suc- cess was a tribute to the Class and a fitting finale to a year of great achievement. Worc up to reality! Keeping that nose to the grindstone is a difficult task at 8 o clock Monday morning. Heavy eyelids and stifled yawns characterize these sophomores as drowsiness permeates the room and the lecturer drones on and on . . . Sophomore class officers — ]ohn Worthington, president; Kenneth Swope, vice-president; Jane Richards, secretary; George Golden, treasurer; and Mr. McDonnell, class advisor, piloted their class through a busy year. SOPHOMORES 20 The growth of bacterium on liquid evaporations proves negative. The growth of evaporated liquid on bacterium . . . What ' s the use . . . Dear Barb . . . ...DRAW NEAR The question is, Will he receive it on time? ' This and other cries of excitement, disappointment, and annoyance fill the air at any hour at the campus post-office —a bustling student activity center that keeps us happy . . . and solvent. You ' ll never blow our house down, was the theme of this bright Rampage float, one of many which helped make Homecoming Weekend a tremendous success. 21 JUNIORS •=.; The class ring, a symbol of earned status, represents three years of concentrated effort, persen ' erance, and hard won goals. This ring urill serve as a guide through the problems and decisions that the owner will encounter as a senior, and in the future a reminder of things past. Enthusiasm and zeal sparked the Class of 65. Juniors helped make Rampage Weekend a success by their active participation. Their Frosh Regs Com- mittee stimulated the Freshmen and excited their spirit, while the Junior Ring Dance celebrated the attainment or a prized possession. The Junior Show provided an evening or rollicking entertainment and reflected the fervor with which this class works. The culmination of this active and rewarding year was the Junior Prom. This delightful evening was one of gratification for a hardworking group i — small re- ward for their outstanding contributions. Igniting and initiating the Class of ' 63 in their many activities are president Al Jones, vice-president Bob Berardelli, treasurer Dan Carroll, class advisor Mr. Morgan, and secretary Dotty Egan. Chemisry lab affords this junior an opportunity to utilize his scientific knowledge for personal study and experimentation. Use of leisure time establishes a strong foundation for student teaching as well as future profes sional worh. Wouid-fce bright spot becomes solitary gloom — An empty mail box proves disheartening after a long day of classes. Letters are a welcome but often scarce diversion from routine. A Identifying these coeds would be a feat in itself. Amazing transformations take place in women s dormitories. Small wonder men are prohibited — they would never survive the shock. 23 Beware of the Cap Crew] The sight of a white cap strikes horror in the hearts of many freshmen during Regs. Here one class - member ' s sentence is carried out as decreed bv Frosh Court. ...ON THE VERGE Juniors wearing white caps are recognized as members of trie Cap Crew — organizers of Frosh Regs. This group clevises pep rallies, greeting groups and Frosh Frolics, for the harassment of the frosh. Voluntarily, and occasionally involuntarily, freshmen join in making Regs a barrel of fun and a help, not a hell week. 24 3F : A meefing of minds — Wnile shopping, five coeds gaze hungrily through a local bahery shop window. Making a selection from the variety of pastries on display is occasion for lengthy debate and long deliberation. Marveling at the unending stream of literature at his disposal, this man inspects each new-found treasure. Students take time out to enjoy a game of pool in the Rec. Observers as well as participants anxiously await the next shot. W iose favorite will it be •—• The juke box offers a variety of sounds. Trouble occurs when limited funds necessitate limited selections. Frosh Court judge beckons another reluctant freshman to appear before the tribunal. Court police escort her to the stand for sentencing. 25 BEGIjy ' Qr a dUa e s Three seniors take a break while enjoying a cup of coffee at the Pig. On October 27, we had a Golden Rampage Week-end. A steak or lob- ster banquet in honor of the queen candidates initiated the festivities. Following the dinner, Larry Elgart and his orchestra and Mike Davies ' Dixieland group provided the music for Cinderella s Ball. Saturday we watched athletic events, paraded through the streets of West Chester, and climaxed the day at a football game with Muskingum. The home- coming week-end closed with a Jazz Concert on Sunday afternoon. Larry Elgart featured on the saxophone and accompanied by his orchestra was the combination to put us in the mood for a gala evening. Dr. and Mrs. Syhes, with our class sponsors and professors, take time to relax with the Senior Class at the January Cordial. 131 CLASS PRODUCTIONS In March of 1 Q60, the senior class broke precedent by presenting a musical comedy in place of the traditional sophomore variety show. The class produced a second musical comedy the following year. Both Damn Yankees and Guys and Dolls were under the direction of Charles Lewis. Each production was motivated, planned, and exe- cuted entirely by members of the class of 1962. Damn Yankees shows the plight of a man who sold his soul to the Devil. ]oe Hardy {Bob Rimel) resists the advances of Lucifer ' s accomplice, Lola (Judy Weinberg). This affair topped the class of 1962s functions for their junior year. Juniors and tkeir guests spent An Evening in the Orient at the 1961 Junior Prom. Eastern atmos- phere prevailed, complete with colorful lanterns, scowling Buddahs, silk tapestries and volcanic mountains. Juniors danced to the music of the Cri- terions while geisha girls served refreshments. Anxiously awaited by all, the introduction of the Queen of the Junior Prom climaxed the dance as Betty Ann Weiser began her reign for the evening. The Eastern atmosphere begins to take form as jane Crumlish, Larry Kimmel, and ]udy Weinberg, members of the decorations committee, busily attempt to transform Hollinger Field House into an Oriental dreamland. The work of the various committees was a prime factor in the success of the dance. Sandra Davis, Elaine Scalise, Barbara Maerz, Lynn Fuss, Diane Behler, Janet Vogel. Mr. Clokey, head coach; Mr. Studemund, coach ; Mr. Morgan, coach: G. Fehr, trainer; K. Shumaker, V. Nelson. L. Anderson, N. Leberman, K. Montgomery, H. Dodson, W. Layer, D. Hoffman, R. Johnson, J. Hart, R. Hable, D. Kline, G. Levin, R. McKemey, D. Thomas, R. Rutt, L. Reed, H. Fritz. Easier seen than done is this feat performed by Bob McKemey as he clears the bar at 12 ' 6 . Despite the loss through graduation of many outstanding track stars. West Chester produced a fine team whose hurdlers, sprinters, field events men, and distance runners retained their powerful track reputation. 169 Captain Ken Hollinger forehands a stiff volley from the base line. Suffering a knee injury early in the season, Ken was unable to contribute his veteran knowledge and skill to the team ' s cause. Already lacking in experience and depth, the team suffered greatly from Ken ' s absence. TENNIS Trie 1961 Tennis Team drew its members from every class. Witn only two veterans playing, this year proved to be one for seasoning rather than pace setting. Front row: K. Hollinger, captain. ]. Harnish, M. Hoffner. Back row: B. Grove, manager, B. Williams, . Yeagfey, F. Kerwin, Coach Weagley. Bruce Williams sends a smashing serve whizzing across the net. Drives like this made Bruce a feared man on the courts and scored points for the team when needed. 170 Under the direction of Dr. Cottrell and Mr. Hopkins, the 1961 Golj Team completed another season. Returning lettermen R. Fielder, R. Durbano, and B. Remley sparked the Ram Linksmen to triumph over such teams as LaSalle, St. Joseph s, and Temple, losing only to such powerful clubs as Villanova and the University of Pennsylvania. Memoers of the team included R. Durbano, L. Henry, V. Lobb, C. Siscio, Mr. Hopkins, assistant coach; Dr. Cottrell, head coach; B. Remley, captain; J. Fipps, A. Jones, R. Fielder, and D. Forney. GOLF This senior trio demonstrates championship form on the campus fainuay; James Fipps, Richard Fielder, and Richard Durbano drive three potential holes-in-one. 171 War ends with peace; peace with war. Poets find precise rhymes to perfect their work; musicians search for chords. Books end, conven- tionally, with the cover. This is no different. But we go on now to begin again and, perhaps, again and again. No book can picture this beginning, so there are no predictions here. No book can picture the trials or wonder that the individuals mentioned here experienced; that is for them to know. But if the editorial staff has produced an aid to the individual and collective memory, it has succeeded. The Staff. Senior Directory Adams, J.
