Noei Stern Has Filled A Variety Of Important Roles The inauguration of Thomas Noel Stern as President of the West Chester State College will take place on December third, nineteen hundred and sixty. Dr. Stem was born in Pittsburgh in 1913, He is the son 01 Leon Thomas Stern, a sociologist and Elizabeth Gert- rude Stern, a freelance journalist and novelist. He attended Friends ' schools, but public school constituted the largest part of his pre-college training. While at Penn Graduate School, Dr. Stem held his first position with the Department of Forests and Waters in Harrisbvirg. From 1945-1953 he was a member of the Boston University faculty and a teacher of Political Science. He was the chairman of the Peace and Social Concerns Committee of New England Friends, president of a community credit union, and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the chapter of the American Asso- ciation of University Professors. Dr. Stern has also had experience as a professor at Rennes and Strasburg in France, and thf University College of Addi;- Ababa. From 1953-1956 Dr. Stern wa-- Director of the Foundation De.s Etats Unis at the University of Paris. The United States House took constructive steps in uniting more than forty countries. Novel- ists William Faulkner and Rich- ard Wright were among the speakers on the program who strived to present a clearer view of American culture. Serpentine The 1961 Serpentine will always hold the cherished memories of our years of work and fun at West Chester State College. The yearbook staff strove to record in this volume every aspect of college life — study, activities, clubs, sports, and special features. They sought to publish a tangible memory for us, so that in years to come we may remember college friends, faculty and administration, and the events of our life at West Chester. Without a doubt, the most memorable e ent of the ear was the inauguration of Dr. T. Noel Stern, the new president of the college. Three noteworthy additions were made on the campus. These were Swope Hall, the music educa- tion building; McCarthy ' Hall, the women ' s dormitory; and the New Men ' s Donnitor}-. All changes recorded, all business completed, and the class of 1961 has completed die 1961 Serpentine — its links in tlie history of WCSC.
