DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Dr. Earr F. Sykes, the Dean of Academic Affairs at West Chester State College, played an important role in the academic lives of the students. It was he who was re- sponsible for policies concerning the withdrawal from a course, the student absences, the change of curriculum in major and or minor fields, the College Scholarship Committee, and the system of de- termining grades. At the same time men and women students in need of employment to aid them in securing their education were re- ferred to Dr. Jack A. Owens, the Dean of Student Affairs. Through Dr. Owens many students secured work opportunities, scholarships, and loans. This rambling colonial style mansion is the president ' s residence, popularly referred to as TANGLEWOOD. The historic building was once a part of a ten-acre farm for the puipose of experimental farming in connection with an agriculture course offered in the fonnative years of the college. Since 1930, TANGLEWOOD has been converted into a luxurious home for the college presidents. The knarred branches of the weeping birches on the grounds gave the residence its name during Dr. Swope ' s occu- pancy. The central door opens into a large reception room, stairsvay and library of tlie spacious three-story home. Located a half block from the main campus. TANGLEWOOD lies nestled in the midst of a sweeping landscape. Seated before the fireplace at Tanglewood are Dr. Stem, Mrs. Stern, and children: Roland, Susan, Ellen, and Joan. E
