OUR PRESIDENT President T. Noel Stem is shown working in his study at Tanglewood. And it truly demands something godlike in him who has cast off the common motive of humanity, and has ventured to trust himself tor a taskmaster. On December 3, 1S60, Dr. T. Noel Stern, the compelling but impressive teacher and administrator, was inaugurated as President, succeeding the late Charles S. Swope. I am going to stress my conviction that there must be more intellectual content in college life. Modem techniques are fine but you have to teach the ability to think Indicative of this was the variety and vast superiority of Dr. Stern ' s previous record. An honor graduate of Swarthmore, a political science student of Lyons, France, graduate and doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, acting chief of the UN Public Administration Mission to Ethiopia and a lin- guist are a few of his many accomplishments.

This rambling colonial style mansion is the president ' s residence, popularly referred to as TANGLEWOOD. The historic building was once a part of a ten-acre farm for the puipose of experimental farming in connection with an agriculture course offered in the fonnative years of the college. Since 1930, TANGLEWOOD has been converted into a luxurious home for the college presidents. The knarred branches of the weeping birches on the grounds gave the residence its name during Dr. Swope ' s occu- pancy. The central door opens into a large reception room, stairsvay and library of tlie spacious three-story home. Located a half block from the main campus. TANGLEWOOD lies nestled in the midst of a sweeping landscape. Seated before the fireplace at Tanglewood are Dr. Stem, Mrs. Stern, and children: Roland, Susan, Ellen, and Joan. E
