President Dr. H. La Rue Frain, Acting President, cheers nthusiastically for another Golden Ram Victory. Our introduction and association with Dr. Frain has been fleeting, but in this year we have realized his constructive leadership and calm counsel. The ofFice of the president is a combination of trivial busy work and unprecedented decisions necessary to the vast progressive improvements on our campus. As the times change, policies must be revised with expert guidance and keen foresight. The student body through representatives often present impulsive demands with fervor, but we have seen in the tranquil office of President Frain that He is indeed wise who does not bid you enter the house of knowledge, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own understanding. During our short association we have seen Dr. Frain as a ready participant in the various phases of campus life, and we are indeed grateful for this active interest. As we leave we say, Thank you. Dr. Frain, for your sincere participation, and friendship. With admiration and a warm glow we will always remember you and the innovations you brought to West Chester State Teachers College. 20

The twenty-four years of Dr. Charles S. Swope ' s presidency were marked by growth in all aspects of life at West Chester State Teachers College. Despite the influence of a tragic world war, the college saw the beginning of a tremendous building program designed to provide more adequate conditions for housing and education on campus. We ore witnessing a phase of this program today. Scholastic progress continued and reached on apex in the approval of the graduate program. West Chester State ' s reputation reached on all-time high. Dr. Swope was constantly in personal contact with college activities. Early each fall he and Mrs. Swope welcomed new students at a tea in Tonglewood. He enjoyed renewing these early acquaintances at various receptions and dinners, guiding us in planning major events, and joining with us to cheer the teams on to victory. His interests were those of a dedicated administrator and an ardent alumnus. We of West Chester State Teachers College are indeed fortunate that Dr. Swope spent his life for something lasting, the improvement of our beloved Alma Mater. His professional attitude was an outstanding quality of Dr. L. Forrest Free, Dean of Instruction at West Chester State Teachers College from 1951 to 1959. His desire to maintain and improve the high scholastic rating of the college was evidenced in endless hours of research and study and was realized in many curriculum improvements during his administration. Under his leadership the various departments performed an intense self-analysis in preparation for the evaluation in 1958 of college accrediting committees. This program demonstrated its success in the re- accrediting of the college by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Notional Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Dr. Free was an interested and tireless participant in community and campus activities. Although his duties as Dean demanded much of his time, he valued highly his opportunities to meet new people. Each semester he displayed his interest in the individual student by helping personally those with perplexing schedule adjustments. We of West Chester State Teachers College recognize the influence of Dr. Free. May we never foil to appreciate it. In memory of these fwo men who live in lives they leave behind we dedicate this SERPENTINE. 3G165 19
