A happy day or a beautiful experience forgotten for the moment often is recalled by a tangible object that holds an element of association. From the tangible objects of West Chester State Teachers College is molded the theme of the 1960 Serpenfine. The community of West Chester is replete with traditions and is a living symbol of progress steeped in historical environment. This community is the home of a college that emerges from its environment as an institution nestled in tradition and eager for advancement. The advances of the college are both progressive and ambitious and add to previous accomplishments to form a wealth of symbols with character and reverence. As a state college West Chester has strong bonds with the Commonwealth — thus the name of the college in the form of the state symbol marks the symbolic beginning of the Serpenfine. Each study habit produces a meaningful symbol. Small elements of study — a desk, a chair, a quiet room, and an underlined text — may be recalled by a familiar room or building. The surroundings, the tangible objects, are personal; individuality originates in these specific signs, but by association v ith more general signs students are reminded of, and recall moments of tedious and self-satisfying study. « tuid(ji I u 3- r yALB ' « Cdo vJl ■ . Through conversation mingled with cokes and coffee many ties are formed and many lasting friendships initiated. The good will that is invoked through recreation is further strengthened by the guiding symbol of the Ram. The archway of Anderson Hall stands as a bulwark offering refuge for those eager for education. The entrances to each room of the library and the main entrance provoke learning and inject strength and encourage- ment as we pass through. The card catalogue pre- sents a staunch barricade on the one side of the library and bids all to enter, see, and find correct paths of study. Entrances symbolize the transition between seeking and finding, ignorance and educa- tion, until, through graduation, we pass the final Gateway to Knowledge. wet io rCvtWA;tGc(cr 13 :S; l M ). As progress is attained, students realize that the cycle of notetaking, reading, and research must be culminated. Theory begins all — then gradually activities begin to loom into the future until there is a merger of theory and practice. In the senior year the final application advances, and all theory, all activities, all practice is combined to form the final application of knowledge — student teaching. The union of all formal and acquired knowledge is finally realized as we are faced by a real teaching experience. 14 9 k J3 ' £ ' ■ J •« .■ , V ?t w- • Jf3 The barracks, home for many West Chester Men. Swope Dr. L. Forrest Free They are not dead who live in lives they leave behind; In those whom they have blessed, they live a life again. And shall live, through the years. Eternal life, and grow each day more beautiful As time declares their good. Forgets the rest, and proves their immortality. Hugh Robert Orr 18 The twenty-four years of Dr. Charles S. Swope ' s presidency were marked by growth in all aspects of life at West Chester State Teachers College. Despite the influence of a tragic world war, the college saw the beginning of a tremendous building program designed to provide more adequate conditions for housing and education on campus. We ore witnessing a phase of this program today. Scholastic progress continued and reached on apex in the approval of the graduate program. West Chester State ' s reputation reached on all-time high. Dr. Swope was constantly in personal contact with college activities. Early each fall he and Mrs. Swope welcomed new students at a tea in Tonglewood. He enjoyed renewing these early acquaintances at various receptions and dinners, guiding us in planning major events, and joining with us to cheer the teams on to victory. His interests were those of a dedicated administrator and an ardent alumnus. We of West Chester State Teachers College are indeed fortunate that Dr. Swope spent his life for something lasting, the improvement of our beloved Alma Mater. His professional attitude was an outstanding quality of Dr. L. Forrest Free, Dean of Instruction at West Chester State Teachers College from 1951 to 1959. His desire to maintain and improve the high scholastic rating of the college was evidenced in endless hours of research and study and was realized in many curriculum improvements during his administration. Under his leadership the various departments performed an intense self-analysis in preparation for the evaluation in 1958 of college accrediting committees. This program demonstrated its success in the re- accrediting of the college by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Notional Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Dr. Free was an interested and tireless participant in community and campus activities. Although his duties as Dean demanded much of his time, he valued highly his opportunities to meet new people. Each semester he displayed his interest in the individual student by helping personally those with perplexing schedule adjustments. We of West Chester State Teachers College recognize the influence of Dr. Free. May we never foil to appreciate it. In memory of these fwo men who live in lives they leave behind we dedicate this SERPENTINE. 3G165 19 President Dr. H. La Rue Frain, Acting President, cheers nthusiastically for another Golden Ram Victory. Our introduction and association with Dr. Frain has been fleeting, but in this year we have realized his constructive leadership and calm counsel. The ofFice of the president is a combination of trivial busy work and unprecedented decisions necessary to the vast progressive improvements on our campus. As the times change, policies must be revised with expert guidance and keen foresight. The student body through representatives often present impulsive demands with fervor, but we have seen in the tranquil office of President Frain that He is indeed wise who does not bid you enter the house of knowledge, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own understanding. During our short association we have seen Dr. Frain as a ready participant in the various phases of campus life, and we are indeed grateful for this active interest. As we leave we say, Thank you. Dr. Frain, for your sincere participation, and friendship. With admiration and a warm glow we will always remember you and the innovations you brought to West Chester State Teachers College. 20 DR. KA A i W f LOO IL All Star Events Issac Stern The same serious interest and intense concentration revealed in the face of Issac Stern, as he revises a violin score, were evidenced to an All Star audience on October 13, through his masterful handling of the instrument. As the moods of his selections changed from the grave andanfe temper of Schu- bert ' s Fanfasia in C Major to the gay revelry of Mozart ' s Rondo from the Concerfo in E Flaf Major some intangible power gripped the listeners, causing their moods also to soar and descend with the music. A rich bass-baritone voice undoubtedly commands the atten- tion of an audience, but when a personality such as that of George London projects itself through the medium of that voice, the hearers are helplessly captivated. Mr. London demonstrated his versatility to us on February 16, as he rendered arias from a variety of operas and a number of songs from the American lyric theatre. A phrase from the An die Musik of Schubert seemed to pervade the air during the entire program: O noble art . . . . George London 126 Paul Paray All Star Preferences in music differ; some are arrested by solemn spiritual themes, such as those in Cesar Franck ' s Symphony in D Minor; others prefer the simple melody of Greensleeves, a favorite English folk song revived by Ralph Vaughan-Williams, or Moussorgsky ' s fantastic musical portrayal of A Nighf on Bald Mountain; still others enjoy the liveliness of the Spanish Caprice by Rimsky-Korsakov. Christmas dance. The bright lights of the Quad Christmas tree typify the Christmas season at West Chester. Every year the day before Christmas vacation is a happy and busy day. The bustling begins as the girls dressing in white gowns and men in dark suits prepare for the caricTle- light White dinner followed by a relaxing seasonal song fest and an after dinner solo. Following dinner the host of young people take the path to Philips Memorial Auditorium for the Carol Service. All join in singing for a portion of the program, then musical organizations on the campus participate to add an air of perfection to the service. As a beautiful end the honor soloist always sings O Holy Night . A mood of reference and beauty is cast over the students and guests and all then procede in an atmosphere of serenity to the Christmas dance. Following the dance a reception is held in the lobby of Main Dorm. This day is indeed a memor- able one and this year West Chester ' s celebration of Christmas was wonderful as: Faith Strousser sang following dinner, as Etta Hershey sang O Holy Night , and as the Crites played for the dance and members of all classes joined in fellowship for the lobby reception. Christmas The Crites made the Christmas dance a success with their lively music. 132 Miss Etta Jean Hershey - honor soloist at the annual Christrr Carol Service. ' m. Football 134 Dr. W. The Golden Rams again reigned as State Teachers College Champions and were rated as one of the best small college teams in the nation. The Rams opened their season with a revenge victory over Villonovo University. Villanova was the only mar on West Chester ' s record last year, but this year the tables were turned by a 13-7 score. West Chester continued its winning way by defeating Mans- field and East Stroudsburg in the next two starts. In the fourth game of the season, the Golden Rams met a new- comer to the schedule in Northeastern University. West Chester continued to dominate the university rivals by trounc- ing N. E. U. 41-8. The Big Red from Shippensburg furnished the Rams with their toughest opposition thus for in the season, and the Rams were pushed before winning 14-0. After the Shippensburg victory only three gomes remained in the Ram ' s quest for an undefeated season. Millersville was the first opponent and West Chester responded by lac- ing their State Teachers College rivals 41-7. November 7, 1959, became the worst day of the year for the West Chester coaches, team, students, and followers. On this day Blooms- burg ended the Rams fifteen-game winning streak by up- setting them on Mt. Olympus by a 13-10 score. The Rams then ended their season with a 70-19 rout over Cheyney. At the close of the season Ram co-captains. Ken Campbell and Bill Shockley, were named to the All State Team; Shockley set several records in the conference and retained his title OS state scoring leader. Coach Killinger also an- nounced his retirement, and Coach Bonder was named head coach for 1960. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE West Chester 13 Villanova University ,. In defeating the Wildcats, the Rams started their 1959 season on a very successful note and made experts sit up and wonder what was in store for future West Chester opponents. Over 14,000 spectators filled Villanova ' s stadium to watch West Chester score two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 13-0 lead at halftime. As the second half began, Villanova started to move but a stubborn and determined West Chester eleven held the larger Villanova team to one touchdown and assured a West Chester victory. Senior co-captains Ken Campbell and Bill Shockley scored the two touchdowns in the win. Ken scored the first on a 3-yard pass from Ted Kowal. Shockley then added the conversion for an early 7-0 lead. Late in the second quarter. Bill rammed through Villanova ' s ten-man line and went 5 yofds for the touchdown. Bill ' s attempt was wide, but the Golden Rams led 13-0. Villanova ' s only moment of glory came when Bill Paczkowski went five yards for a touchdown and Larry Sopko added the extra point. Coach Lorback ' s team compiled a very impressive 9-0-1 record against such soccer greats as Penn State, Howard, Temple, and Elizabethtown. The Rams opened its 1959 season with a convincing 5-3 victory over a star-studded Alumni squad that was coached by Earle Muddy Waters. From that game on, the West Chester booters rolled over eight straight opponents before meeting undefeated Elizabethtown. This game was to be a battle of the unbeatens since Elizabethtown hod only a tie to mar its perfect record. The fourth quarter was played to a standstill but as the game drew to a close West Chester scored a goal to throw the game into a 2-2 tie. After the scoreless extra periods both teams still remained unbeaten and the Rams only needed a win over Temple to qualify for the NCAA play-offs. In the following game against Temple the Ram booters rose to the occasion and squeezed out a 1-0 victory. The University of Maryland furnished the opposition in the quarter finals of the NCAA tournament and the Rams, playing before home town fans, responded with a sensational win which enabled them to travel to Storrs, Connecticut, for the semi-finals of the tourney. The University of Bridgeport was drawn to oppose our Golden Rams and it was to hand us the only loss of the season. As the season progressed so did the Rams, and by the middle of the season they were in first place in the State Teachers Conference with a 5-2 record. The high point of the season came when West Chester was awarded a forfeit victory over arch rival Mansfield. Mansfield defeated the Ram courtmen earlier in the season by a 91-72 score, but when the second game started the tables were turned. Referee Lou Bonder awarded a forfeit victory to West Chester when the Mansfield team got out of hand and apparently had lost the desire to play basketball. The game was forfeited with six minutes remaining and West Chester ahead by 15 points. The Ram ' s 67-48 win over previously undefeated Kutztown was rated as another upset since Kutztown was picked to win the league championship. The Rams suffered greatly through graduation, but the returning lettermen and new sophomores formed a team which combined determination with a strong will to win. Co-captains Bill Hordison and Bob Davis, and juniors Joe Friedel and Dale Bonsall accumulated points for the Ram grapplers throughout the season. West Chester was beaten by a very strong St. Joseph ' s College squad. St. Joe is usually rated as one of the top eastern powers in both cross country and track. At the close of the season, West Chester participated in the college division of the Middle Atlantic States. The Rams defeated such teams as Lehigh, P. M. C, Swarth- more, Haverford, and Bucknell. Although unable to match their 15-1 record of the 1958 season, the diamond men under the direction of Coach Killinger compiled commendable 11-5 record. The five losses were inflicted by three powerful baseball teams. Temple and Villanova defeated the Rams twice while the University of Pennsylvania inflicted the other loss. The highlights of the season included the revenge win over Ship- pensburg and the trouncing of arch rivals St. Joe ' s and Millersville. Shippensburg handed the Rams their only loss last season in an extra inning affair, but the Rams gained revenge with a 9-3 victory in the 1959 season. Largely responsible for this season ' s success were outfielder Butch Shockley, catcher-outfielder Abe Weidman, and pitcher Paul Chen- ger. A two year veteran. Butch has been a consistent star for the Golden Rams whether it be in the outfield or at first base. Butch ' s hitting and tremendous power have aided in giving the Rams their winning touch. Newcomers to varsity baseball are sophomores Abe Weidman and Paul Chenger. Abe has developed into a first rate ball player and his long ball hitting has given the Rams much needed scoring punch. Abe led the team in home runs this season. Paul has become the Rams number one thrower in his first year of varsity competition, but he will be unable to play next year since he has signed a contract with the Milwaukee Braves. The 1959 lacrosse Ramettes completed their season with a 4-1 record under the able coaching of Miss Eleanor Pepper. They de- feated such highly spirited teams as the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore, Drexel, and Beaver, and lost only to Ursinus. Lacrosse is one of the roughest and most exciting sports offered at West Chester. Many freshmen each year try their luck at this relatively new sport; this is evidenced by the large reserve teams the Ramettes produce. In view of all the efforts put forth by the teams, it is hoped that lacrosse will gain the recognition that it deserves as a varsity sport in the years to come. •,  ..J , 160 The 1959 lacrosse team, captained by Joyce Williams, included; First Row: hit to right: M.
