' - • — « , . The Demonstration School Foreword The campus of our college is a part of the life of each student. Spacious buildings, accentuated by serpentine stone, are symbolic of the years gone by since the ' late 1 800 ' s when the first building was completed. The campus, its buildings nestled amid the shade of trees, portray many contrasts. Beauty is viewed in the arched entrances of Anderson Hall, in the huge pillars of the Francis Harvey Green Library and in the twin towers of Philips Memorial, while home-like qualities of the interior of Main Dorm and the many modern facets of the Field House are distinctive of these two buildings. While thoughts are concentrated on future development with the addition of new buildings and the expansion of old ones, we shall forever cherish our buildings of serpentine. Dedication In the quotation, Just as the twig is bent the tree ' s inclined, is prophesied the future of our lives. Are we, as students, not like branches or stems that continually grow and develop? The planter guides the growth of his tree, but who nurtures our growth so that it is inclined towards the right direction? As the teacher guides and advises, so the student grows and progresses. During the four-year stay of the class of ' 59 at West Chester, we have been guided by many teachers. We have, however, been helped greatly by two teachers, in particular, in solving various class problems. These two are, of course, our class advisors, Mrs. Bliss and Dr. Bonder. To you both, we dedicate this Serpentine in appreciation for the tireless assistance you have given us. Your concern for us did not stop in your classrooms, but was carried out onto the campus. Whether walking across the campus grounds or only standing out- side Anderson Hall, we could depend on you for an amicable smile or a friendly greeting of Hello, how are you? Thank you, .AArs. Bliss and Dr. Bonder! Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Bliss, stu- dents are carefully studying specimens under the microscope and noting their findings. Dr. Bonder, caught in a typical pose, is giving in- structions to Rams before they charge ahead to victory. administration and faculty - ? DR. CHARLES S. SWORE Our President We cannot leave West Chester State Teachers College without stopping to consider those who contributed to our happiness and welfare. Certainly, our president is one who had helped us feel welcome and happy at this college. As a former student and teacher at West Chester, our president is keenly aware of the needs and problems of the students enrolled today. He continually tries to improve our college in any way he can. He smiles sincerely at us when we pass him on campus; he joins us in cheering to victory our athletic teams, and he makes us feel important by shaking our hands when he greets us at his home and at college affairs. We offer our sincere appreciation along with our farewell to the president of West Chester State Teachers College— Dr. Charles S. Swope. Pictured here are Dr. and Mrs. Swope enjoying the delicious meal at the annual White Supper on December 7, 1958. A BUSY MAN on campus is Dr. L. Forrest Free, Dean of Instruc- tion. Tl iPli ' lMI - ;i - Tanglewood is noted in the east for its rare variety of shrubs and trees, one of which is a sophria japonica. There are only two or three such plants in the east. We can certainly be proud of the impressive residence of our president. At the corner of Rosedale Avenue and South Matlack Street lies the ofTicial residence of the President of West Ches- ter State Teachers College. President Charles S. Swope and his family are now the occupants of this beautiful home. For many years this home was known as the Thomas Darlington property. Only a shell of the original old stone mansion may now be seen, as roof and floors have been changed, and the present building overflows the space alloted to its predecessors. The first college president to live in Tanglewood was Dr. Norman W. Cameron who, with his family, occupied the home in 1930. These included In- herit The Wind in December, a children ' s play in January, Our Lady ' s Tumbler for Easter, and a play given in the round later in the spring. Though the work was exhausting, each player did a superior job. In October of 1958 the Little Theatre players, directed by Mr. McEntire, presented Light Up the Sky for Parents ' Weekend. In addition, outstand- ing campus soloists are given an opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra through special recitals sponsored by the group. Svniphonv Organized for the purpose of playing compositions written for a small orchestra is the Sinfonietta composed of thirty-three college musi- cians. Under the baton of Dr. Constantine Johns, the group in the past few years has included in its program various types of music including seventeenth century and contemporary pieces. Sinfonietta li i i ■1 m. i i 2 A i. Women ' s Chom Melodic perfection and beauty comes only from continued training. Our Women ' s Chorus, under the di- rection of Miss Sheppard, practices arduously and can indeed be proud of the impressive programs it has pre- sented. Men ' s (]liorus The echo which we hear in the Philips Memorial Auditorium in rich and mellow as the Men ' s Chorus, directed by Mr. Sweet, commences another session. It finds joy in singing; we find ours in the beauty created. West Chester State Teachers College has a fine College Choir. This organization is composed of one hundred and fifteen students and is under the very capable direction of Dr. Arthur Jones. The Choir was represented at the Pennsylvania Educator ' s Music Conven- tion held at Harrisburg and also assisted at the All-Star Program featuring the National Symphony Orchestra. These students sing at our annual Christmas Carol Service. Their inclusion on the program makes a quite enjoyable contribution to the large audience in attendance. Quality and quantity continue to be fine attributes of this musical organization. Oriterions One of our most poignant memories for many years to come will be the music of the Crites played on numerous occasions during our colle ge years. The Criterions, our own college dance band, not only provides music for formal and semi-formal dances, but also presents an annual convocation program which is thoroughly enjoyed by the entire audience. Under the direction of Michael Solick, the band transposes many favorite tunes to the original style of the band. The theme we hear often is Paoli Local. Our appreciation is extended to each member of the Criterions! The mellow notes of the Criterions provide a superb back- ground for dancing in the Philips Memorial Ballroom. Ram ' s Horn The Ram ' s Horn is the official athletic magazine published by the Varsity Club and sold on Wayne Field at all football games. This publication contains the evening ' s program, pictures of the football squads and coaches, probable starting line-ups and the rosters of both teams. The success of the magazine is attributed to the support of its patrons and the fine work of its editor, his staff, and the faculty advisor, John W. Clokey. Probably every yearbook staff goes to work with a commendable and fervid ambition to produce the most outstanding edition in the history of the school . . . and thus it has been with the 1959 Serpentine staff. Under the fine leadership of the Editor-in-Chief, Joan Schroeder, and the Business Manager, William V alters, definite plans for the yearbook were begun in the Spring semester of 1958. Since that time, many hours of hard work were given to the compila- tion of a well-directed, simplified, and coordinated plan. However, this plan could not have been carried through without the much-needed assistance given, by the entire staff of approximately seventy members headed by the nine assistant editors and two assist- ant business managers. A great deal of worthwhile guidance, based on experience, was also provided by the faculty advisors. With harmony and common purpose, all helped to produce a work of art that covers a four-year period. The results of the time, thought, talk, and effort applied by the staff have been portrayed in the unique contents of these pages. Hats off to the fine staff of the 1959 Serpentine!! The Serpentine In this area of Pennsylvania the green, spotted stone of serpentine is used for architectural and dec- orative purposes. It is a sturdy substantial stone and easily recognizable because of its color. Our Serpentine yearbook has adopted the sanne name. The wealth of history that these stones have enclosed in our campus buildings can be related to the epic of a class that is contained within the com- pleted yearbook. In following the tradition of other classes, our year- book attempts to be a receptacle of memories of our years spent at West Chester S ate Teachers College. 53 activities 1 Sparkling Bambi Linn and dashing Rod Alexander danced their way to thunderous applause on October sixth. ALlSTiR The gay, vibrant atmosphere on the stage con- trasted sharply to the silent, expectant mood in the audience. The pulsating performance of television ' s very famous dance team, Bambi Linn and Rod Alex- ander, captivated the All-Star audience on October Sixth and held them spellbound. Performing with this fascinating husband and wife dance team was a troupe of sixteen young dancers and singers, all vivacious and exciting. The title of the evening ' s program was Dance Jubilee. In George Bernard Shaw ' s play, Devil ' s Disciple, profligate Richard Dudgeon, who is sentenced to be hanged, finally wins over the friendship of Mrs. Anderson, wife of Anthony Anderson who saves Richard. The stupendous Canadian Players, under the excellent direc- tion of Dems Carey, presented this melodrama to an enthusiastic All-Star audience on Novem- ber Nineteenth in the Philips Memorial Audi- torium. These talented performers were tour- ing the United States and Canada in order to entertain hundreds of audiences with this play. Unlike another colonial suitor, Richard Dudgeon, played by Ted Follows, is speaking for himself as he wins over prudish Mrs. Anderson, played by Eleanor Nichols. El ' ESTS As knowledge is the nourishment of the mind, music is the nourishment of the heart. Beautiful tones sung by Brian Sullivan filled the audience with a sense of appreciation and awe for this operatic virtuoso. As Mr. Sulli- van walked on stage, his glowing, sincere personality reached out and enveloped the audience. As he sang aria after aria, the audi- ence seemed to be adopting him as its own,- so exquisite and unique was his singing. Handsome Metropolitan tenor, Brian Sullivan, with his rich, powerful voice, charmed and delighted his audience at the third All-Star, February tenth. Howard Mitchell, through his pro- ficient conducting, has helped educe the musical genius inherent in each musician of the National Symphony Orchestra. Each member of the or- chestra played as though inspired. The evening ' s program also included selections by the College Choir under the adept direction of Dr. Arthur Jones. The All-Star series terminated on April first with the execution of orchestral selections by the National Symphony Orchestra under the supeib conduction of Howard Mitchell. 57 esm When supplied with scissors, paints, and scrap materials elementary education students become creative wizards! Typical fan reaction to a victory such as this can be readily seen on the faces of the Ram supporters. 66 Led by co-captains, Don Bailey and John Rocco, the soccermen of coach, Mr. Lorbach, once more displayed the skill that has long established West Chester as a major soccer power in the East taking on a list of opponents that included such soccer greats as Penn State, Panzer, Baltimore, and Drexel. Year after year, under the expert tutelage of Coach Reese and his assistants, the Ram fledglings have offered a con- stant supply of talent to fill vacant varsity berths. From a family of seven brothers and sisters only she lives at home with her mother. Two reside in another village, two are at sea, and two dwell in God ' s Heavenly Kingdom. To the child, the family is not separated. We are seven, she insists. The class of ' 59 has four hundred fifty students present in the classroom and one in God ' s Heavenly Kingdom. But Harold is not separated from our class. He is with us always in spirit, mind, and memory. We are four hundred fifty- one, we insist. The Staff wishes to express its gratitude to the parents and business firms who have so thoughtfully and generously patronized The 7959 Serpentine. Mr. and Mrs. M. Abrams Chester, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. H.
