iim ' w M The hammer of education was lifted for the first letter of the Egyptian alphabet, then arched through the Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance periods, until it struck the serpentine stone with a broadening blow to imprint the Modern A in the progress of man on the cover of the 1957 SERPENTINE. Every period has found its spokesman in a great mind of that day who is represented in the brief endsheet portraits. Each of the five major divisions of this modern annal repre- sents the five stages of man ' s progress in accordance with the e title of the division. Thus, by blending the vast knowledge of the past with the numerous discoveries of the present, we have formed a picture of progress — THE EDUCATION OF MAN. The education of man is a long and an infricaie process, requiring the untiring efforts of devoted teachers. Thus it is that we, the Class of 1957, dedicate our SERPEN- TINE to the memory of Dr. Robert F. Anderson, a true interpreter of man ' s vast knov l- edge and a sympathetic adviser to thousands of West Chester students. Dr. Anderson, distinguished alumnus and Professor Emeritus, served the college from 1907 to the time of his death, August 30, 1956. Since his retirement in 1936, he held the position of Director of the Student Activities Association, guiding this body toward a sound and useful financial policy. He also influenced the future of the college in another direction as evidenced by the growing fund for the construction of the Veterans Me morial Building. A high tribute was paid to Dr. Anderson in May, 1946, when Education Hall was dedicated to him for his many years of service to the college. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, his constant interest in student wel- fare, and his unselfish education of his fellowman, we are proud to inscribe his name in the pages of the 1957 SERPENTINE. ml Education Hall, popularly known as Anderson Hall, is Ihe meeting place of all curricula. ANTONY LEO MARHEFKA Life crept away into the shadow, and in its place came bright Eternity. Eternity took him by the hand and led the student scientist and artist to the threshold of the greatest Teacher man has ever known. Only now will his educa- tion and destiny be complete. He walked the paths of nature and explored the riches this world had to offer. He left one rich legacy to his classmates. The cover and the end sheets of this yearbook are the products of his artistic genius. JOSEPH H. DAVISON Mr. Joseph H. Davison, supervisor of Second- ary Education student teaching at West Chester for ten years, was well known as a leader In the field of general education. On this campus he did much to inspire leadership among the students and to enrich their appreciation of the teaching profession. He was active as an edu- cator for nealy three decades, of which the first twenty years were spent in Ohio, where he served in many capacities, ranging from ele- mentary classroom teacher to superintendent of schools. Everyone who knew Mr. Davison respected him, not only as an exceptionally fine teacher, but also as a man who had a sympathetic un- derstanding of and a keen insight into the prob- lems of students. West Chester students and fa- culty alike will miss his guiding hand and will long remember him for his contribution to the professio nal development of those who will fol- low in his footsteps.
