The freshmen get their first taste of the never-ending registration lines. The confused expressions topped by green dinks this fall belonged to the Freshman Class, who, led by their advisers, Mrs. I Iary Bliss and Dr. James Bonder, soon emerged from their quandary. The Dink Daze and St. Valentine ' s dances, along with a booth at tlie Hallowe ' en party, proved that the Class of ' 59 is an integral part of West Chester ' s campus. Three fresh- man members of the varsity football team gained recognition for the class. Freshmen meet the President. President and Mrs. Swope greet our incoming freshmen at Tanglewood. Under the able guidance of their advisers, Mrs. Elizabeth Sevier and Mr. Theodore Hallman, and their class officers, Philip Lchr, president ; Anthony Mcconi, vice-president ; Joan E. Anderson, secretary ; and Jack ' an Newkirk, treasurer, the class of ' 58 is proving to be a class of capable leaders at West Chester State. In the fall of the year it is initiation into the Valkyrie Club for these members of the Sophomore Class, as they exhibit one of the strange sights wliich can be seen on campus during those three days of club regs. CLASS OFFICERS: left to right — Jack VanNewkirk, treasurer; Joan Anderson, secretary; Tony Meconi, rice-president; Phil Lehr president. Mrs. Elizabeth Sevier and Mr. Theodore Hallman. mH Under the light of the harvest moon, the Sophomore Class sponsored a semi-formal dance, Autumn Leaves. Amid country splendor, the guests of the evening en- joyed dancing to the enchanting music of the Criterions. I I Juniors As juniors, the Class of 1957 accepted addi- tional responsibilities. Their activities included the selection of a class ring, the Hallowe ' en Party Target-Shooting Booth, and the spon- sorship of the Freshman Class. The highlight of the year was the Junior Prom, Paradise Island. The Mantle Ceremony ' , prior to Alumni Day, was an impressive occasion. It is in this fasliion that the Junior Class accepts the heavier burdens of seniority. Through the help and encouragement of their sponsors, Miss Jean Landis and Mr. William Landrum, the Junior Class has maintained a record of which it can be proud. ALL STAR CONCERTS Our All Star Series this year presented Walter Cassel, Jan Pcerce, the opera La Bolienie, and the National Symphony Orchestra. The artists who appear in our All Star programs arc carefully selected by a committee consisting of faculty members, students, and citizens of West Chester. The concerts are available to students at nominal cost covered by the student activity fee. 24 Convocation A chapel program that is always enjoyable is one presented by the Little Theater players. Here is a scene from the play Wurtzel - Flummery. Behind that monkey suit stands none other than Dr. McTavish of the Science Department. The Master of Ceremonies for the quiz show is John Hepp. The Campus Charities program was presented in the form of a Masquerade Party Show. The Collegettes did the singing commercials, and the panelists participating were representatives of the four curricula. Junior Prom Reservations for tlie cruise to Paradise Island aboard the S.S. West Chester State were filled well in advance of the sailing date of November nineteenth. After weeks of prep aration by various committees, the crew, made up of tlie Junior Class, provided a memorable trip to a make-believe isle. Dancers swayed to the smooth nmsic of the Criterions against a tropical back- ground of palm trees and sandy shore. The crowning of Carole Rupert as queen of the island added a regal note to the unforgettable occasion. As midnight approached, the dancers bade a sad farewell to Paradise Island. Vivacious, blue-eyed blonde, Carole Rupert reigned over this year ' s Junior Prom. Carole ' s many activities in- cluded cheerleading, Student Govern- ment, Student Council, Big-Little Sis- ter Committee, and the Women ' s Rec- reation Association. 26 The Queen of Paradise Island with her attendants and their escorts. Andrew Wilson. 27 Witches, goblins, and ghosts were special guests at the college on the twenty-fifth of October. From the countries of Frosh, Main, Barracks and Wayne, freakish animals and people mingled with glamorous personalities. Adding to the night ' s merri- ment were games of skill found in varied booths along the Midway, and highlighting the festivities was a variety dance in the Quad. From the darkest regions of Africa came tribal hunters, while several angels floated among the crowd which gathered on the Quad for this year ' s All-College Hallo- we ' en Party. Coeds grouped around the mysterious panel of jurists to witness an evening of entertainment which was presented by members of the student body. J; we en Party fn t Mardi Gras As the doors swing open to the dimly lighted dining room, we see future teachers emerge as debutantes. The Christmas tree in the lobby of Main Dorm filled the room with a scent of pine, adding to the holiday spirit. The Annual White Supper with the glow of candlelight was the highpoint of the pre-Christmas festivities. The smiles of the underclassmen reveal their approval and enjoyment of the custom. Yutetide 30 The Christmas Spirit arrived on campus dressed in annual caroling, decorated dormitories, and glittering Christmas trees. An informal dance featured candy canes for hundreds who crowded into Recreation Hall. The Christmas festivities ended with the traditional White Supper, after which all gathered in the auditorium to hear the beautiful Carol Service. The picturesque processional of the music groups pre- ceded the annual Carol Ser- The honor soloist, Janet Ingham, a senior music stu- dent, is rendering O Holy Night. Holiday decorations expressed the festive spirit in Main Dorm. The fleecy white of the women ' s gowns was accented by holly and mistletoe, while ornamental mobiles gave a sparkle to the doorways. ' ' ' P li 31 January Graduates On January 1-1 a nicmorablc diiiner-tlanco and cordial were held in honor of the fifty-four January graduates. Many seniors were present at the dinner whicli was served in the college dining room. Honored guests were President Swope; Miss Caton, Dean of Women; and the senior class officers. Bon Voyage, an appropriate farewell theme for the semi-formal dance, was held in Recreation Hall following the dinner. The starry-eyed couple is Ralph Whittakcr and Roberta Smith as they enjoyed the music and dancing at the Bon Voyage dance. The photographer catches these January gradu- ates and their dates as they finish dinner. Later a cordial was held in the Facuhy Lounge, giving the final touch to a gala affair. Mr. and Mrs. James Argires are pictured in the atmo- sphere of the sea theme set by the star fish and coraL Karl Gudenberg, class president, expresses his congratulations and appreciation to the graduates for their services to the class. Senior Weekend Striking a happy but sentimental note in our closing days at West Cliester was the Senior Weekend of May 11 and 12. The Senior Ball at the Penn-Shcrwood Hotel in Philadelphia opened the weekend ' s activities, which had long been planned by a class committee under the direction of vice-president Richard Wuest. Saturday night found us dining and dancing in the Golden Ball- room of the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. Pictured above are the dining room and the ball room of the Penn-Sherwood Hotel where the class gathered for the first night of the eagerly awaited weekend. Richard Charles and Robert Rickcnbach, the aforementioned crown-holders, led the way as the netmen racked up a total of eight wins against only one setback, that being a whitewashing a t the hands of the Swarthmore College garnet, by 9-0. A combination of strong serving strategy and excellent net play both in the singles and doubles sets made this season one of the most successful in court records at West Chester. The squad, captained by Richard Bingaman, was well-balanced, and competition for positions was keen through- out the entire schedule. Although bad weather hampered the playing of many- early matches, when the T-nicn played, they burned up the courts. By the score of 9-0 they trounced Temple University, Kutztown State Teachers, St. Joseph ' s twice, LaSalle College, University of Delaware, and Albright College. In the engagement with Drexel they won by a 6-3 margin. Seniors on the squad were Captain Richard Bingaman, James Rich and Manager Vincent Trombetta.
