Ivins and Mr. Emil H. Messikomer. Mrs. Ivins, a member of the Department of Social Studies, lias not con- fined her talents solely to the area of instruction. Through her advisory work with Neithian Club and Student Government Association, she has gained respect and admiration for her untiring efforts and even temperament. Mr. Messikomer, in his dual role as director of personnel and basket- ball coach, has so successfully combined his administrative duties with his coaching abilities that he is recognized equally by members of the faculty and by the student body. Together, they have become well known to us in their capacity as Class Advisers, for they have helped us to achieve success by their friendly assis- tance and wise encouragement. For these reasons, we, as potential graduates of West Chester State Teachers College, are proud to dedicate this book to Mrs. Ivins and Mr. Messikomer, two graduates of this college who have proved themselves to be our valuable leaders and friends. Students holding certain high oflicial positions in the leading campus organizations automatically become mem- bers of the Cabinet. Two of the important campus activities which are under the direction of student government are Freshman Regulations and the All-College Party. However, the major function of these organizations is to pass and reject legislation, most of which is submitted bv the student bodv. Seated: T. Clyde, A. Urbano, J. Collins, N. Swanson: Standing: R. The outstanding project of the Student Activities Association is the sponsorship of the celebrated .All-Star Programs. This year ' s presentations included Robert Merrill, Yehudi Menuhin, William Warfield, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The co-ordinating link between the Women ' s Day Student Council and the Dormitory Council is the Advis- ory Board. This important and active organization has sponsored a tea honoring the Seniors, the Mid-Winter Formal, the Big — Little Sister Picnic, the Council Ban- quet, and the festive event of decorating the lobby of Main Dormitory for the Christmas season. The accomplishments of this group under the leader- ship of Helen Dennis, president; Xatalie Turpin, vice- president; Joan Coolbaugh, secretary; and Dorothy Chambers, treasurer; have made the student body aware of the existence of this organization. This year the editors and the members of the staff have been very successful in printing the college paper every two weeks; formerly, it was a bi-monthly publication. Many changes have been made since the spring semester of 1953. The full four page publication of previous years has given way to a six page newspaper of better quality. This change has produced a finer campus news organ. These past years have witnessed major changes in the context of the paper, but tliese have in no way detracted from the high standards and reputation that are a part ot Quad. Fine editorials, feature articles, the very new and po)jular gossip column, sport stories, and a calendar of the week are but a few of the highlights of the ])aper. An added feature is a section devoted to former West Chester graduates, appropriately called News Briefs. Tuesday nights at the printers, last minute changes and revisions, endless proof reailing — all these are every day occurrences for the slalf of Quad Angles, an integral part of campus life. The editors and staff mem- bers, under the capable direction of Dr. Thomas K. Berry, endeavor to jiresent to the student issues of the most important events that take place in the various curricula — Secondary, Elementary, Music, and Health and Physical Education. Displaying its versatility. Quad acts as an advertis- ing agency. Without the advertisements we should never know what movies are playing up town. Since the size has been reduced, it has been necessary to cut some of the advertising. Who is responsible for seeing that the bills are paid? This responsibility rests with the Business Staff. Behind most organizations on campus there are a few loyal members who receive none of the glory, but who do a large share of the work. Quad Angles is no excep- tion to this rule. A little publicized, yet extremely hard working group, is the Business Staff of the college news- paper. It is they who make the publication of the paper possible by getting advertisements, straightening out the mailing list, juggl ing expenses, and doing all those imiumerable little jobs that publishing a newspaper entails. Although usually in the background, this part of the Quad, Angles staff decides such problems as the number of publications the budget can carry each year. The Quad Angles Business Staff holds the reins on the ambitious Editorial Staff, but their mutual harmonious attitude for the production of a worthwhile news organ has led to a highly successful and popular publication. The Valkyrie Club, comprised of sopho- more, junior, and senior ' ' Phys. Ed. students, is one of the most active organizations on campus, and its ' members are easily recognized by their white blazers. An outstanding activity this year was the publishing of Newsletter. a bulletin containing Valkyrie alumnae news. It was edited bv the present mend)ers and circulated among alumnae. Another new feature was the awarding of a plaque to the outstanding Valkyrie member. Last, but not least, we cannot forget the major part the Valkyries played in the success of the { ' ircMs. The Heallh Eds congregate after a vielory. Sophomore Healtli Eds model the latest fashions. VALKYRIE CLUB FRIARS CLUB This organization during the past year has sponsored three dances, awarded a scholarship to a promising and needy male member of the Junior Class, and presented a trophy to the championship intramural basketball team. CONCERT BAND vX -f The Woodwind Quintet, a musical ensemble under the capable direction of Mr. Paul Carson, is one which is too often unrecognized on campus. The group consists of five instru- ments — flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and French horn, which are combined to offer unusual and melodic presentations. The Quintette performs at recitals and other musical functions of both civic and cultural natures. CHRISTMAS ON CAMPUS A vast audience listens to the Bible story of the first Christmas. THE COLLEGE CIRCUS Mr. Alvin Davis co-ordinates the form and rhythm of a dance routine. Perfect casting: Clowns Angelo, Kee- nan, Grossman, Kautter, and Uuft ' relax between scenes. With the coining of the animals and the call of the ringmaster, Robert Norris, this year ' s Physical Education Circus came to the new Field House. Stupendous! Colossal! Mammoth! shouted the spectators, as the base- ball tap, the crack freshman rhythm drill, and the inter- national dance extravaganza unfolded before the eyes of the thrilled onlookers. To capacity crowds this mass production made a two hour show one of abundant entertainment, while the jovial and jocund clowns hilariously frolicked to the delight of the fun-thrilled audience. The Circus Band literally pranced and romped with the clowns as they laughed through performances on April 7, 9, and 10. Meanwhile, in the ofTstage area, the hard-working circus directors and producers, Mr. Alvin Davis, and Miss Anne Schaub, with Nancy Snyder, Hazel Hendren, Nancy Vulich, and Robert Trimble, hustled the cast of three hundred fifty students in and out of their costumes. Through a combination of organization, originality, and an abundance of talent, the Circus was an outstand- ing event on the calendar of 1954. Sophomore girls use lemmy sticks to present an ex- hibition of rhythm and skill. The lumbering elephant cavorts with several monkeys in the gigantic animal parade which opens festivities. FOOTBALL Coach Glenn Killinger ' s 1953 Golden Rams opened an ambitious nine game schedule with the Fort Belvoir Army Engineers. The Rams gave an excellent account of them- selves against the ex-collegiate stars before bowing 21-6. Pennsylvania Military College moved into Wayne Field intent upon trampling the Purple and Gold. However, West Chester ' s bench strength was too much for the Cadets and the Rams triumphed 27-8. West Chester next entertained Drcxel ' s Dragons in a not-too-hospitable style. Drexel crumbled before a 27 point fourth period onslaught and absorbed a 47-12 drubbing. The game of the year was played on the University of Delaware ' s field in Newark, Delaware. The Golden Rams, after trailing at halftime by a score of 13-7, came roaring back to overpower the highly- favored Blue Hens and handed them their only defeat of the season by a 27-13 score. Lock Haven was no match for the visiting Rams squad which rolled up a 54-7 count by the time the final whistle sounded. West Chester suffered a loss in prestige when an inspired East Stroudsburg team held them scoreless in the first half before the Rams rallied in the second half for a 16-7 victory. Back on Wayne Field again, the Ram gridders trounced helpless Kutztown 53-6 even though coach Killinger cleared the bench in an effort to keep the score down. After the Millersville game was canceled because of snow, the Rams traveled to Bloomsburg to play the Huskies with the Teachers College Champion- ship hanging in the balance. The Rams closed out the seas on with a hard fought 20-7 triumph and captured their second consecutive championship. 54 CO-C.4PTAIISS Alexander Neinian and David Dolbin SCORES West Chester Sept. 18 v. However, it was soon forgotten as Millersville and Baltimore both took the measure of West Chester by scores of 76-69 and 82-75 respectively. The Messikomer men finally got into the winning column with victories over Shippensburg by 85-78 and over Elizabethtown by 74-69. Drexel to])i)ed the Rams in the initial game in the new Field House by 66-58. West Chester then won eight consecutive games, five of them on the home floor, before bowing to Millersville for the second time by a score of 66-52. The Rams were not slowed by the defe at, and Kutztown 70-50, Denison 65-64, Baltimore 78-70, P.M.C. 67-58, and East Stroudsburg 83-56 lost before the local fans. Taking to the road for several of their games, the West Chester quintet joined forces to defeat Washington College by a score of 68-52, Bloomsburg by a score of 80-72, and Delaware by a score of 64-49. Co- captained by Theodore Beck and Sheldon Saffren, the Rams ran their winning streak to eight in a row at one time during the season before bowing to Millersville in the State Teachers College Conference title game. James Rick, Richard Miller, and Karl Shaffer, along with Beck and Saffren, comprised the starting team. The Rams, who had been a character build- ing team for the past few years, compiled an excellent 6-2 record. Mr. Hawthorne ' s proteges inaugurated the season by beating Lehigh University by the score of 25-34 (low score wins in cross country). Middle Atlantic Champion St. Joseph ' s College had too much for the Rams as they trounced West Chester by 43-16. LaSalle College had to go all out to shade the Rams by a 31-24 score. Freshman Jerry Baiikert set a new Washington College course record, when the Ram harriers stopped Washington by the score of 25-30. Bankert again broke a course record as the Rams romped over the Cheyney Team by a 15-45 score. Inevitably, the home course record fell as Jerry Bankert led West Chester to an 18-43 victory over visiting Howard University. Temple University was the next to fall before the surging Rams by a score of 25-35. The West Chester runners closed their season with a resounding 20-43 humbling of Albright College. When the final analysis was evaluated, the West Chester Stickmen had a 13 win — 2 lose record. Glen Kiliinger s swatters defeated some of the outstand- ing teams in the Philadelphia area. Their most noteworthy victory was an 8-6 win over a highly publicized Villanova nine. At one time during the season the Rams had nine straight victories, only to be stopped by a powerful Blooms- burg State Teachers College team. Once on the field, the Rams were led by their co- captains. Bill Munch and Fred Prender. Prender led the team in runs batted in, and Munch ' s spectacular plays gave West Chester one of the best defensive infields in the East. Throughout the 1953 season, Bob Quinn and Fred Hoffman aided the team tremendously with their hitting and pitching. When Quinn or Hoffman were not pitching, they played the outfield. Both men turned in one-hit perform- ances on the mound. In the hitting department every man on the West Chester team batted over .300. Bob Quinn won the team batting championship with an amazing .421 average. Hoffman finished second in the batting honors, followed by Murphy and Hendrickson. With the exception of one game, Cliff Hendrickson was the backstop for West Chester. Cliff batted well over the .350 mark and contributed greatly to the team ' s success with great defensive plays. The Rams have high hopes for the 1954 season. Through graduation the swatter ' s lost Captain Bill Munch and Charles Weber, who was runner-up for National Cham- pion in Wrestling. With a replacement for Munch in the West Chester infield. Coach Killinger will again have an error-tight infield. With two pitchers like Fred Hoffman and Bob Quinn returning, and a team which batted over .300 during the past season, the year of 1954 promises to be a rewarding one on the baseball diamond at West Chester. In fair weather they practiced on the archery range behind President ' s Swope home, while in poor weather the Old Gym provided a shelter for their practice. This year the Archery Club planned three meets with surrounding colleges and held one tournament at West Chester. ARCHERY B. Ford, Y. Trasalti, D. Rodgers, P. Pals, G. Larkin, J. Robinson, E. Meeting Temple at home and winning every set, the team then traveled to I rsinus where it again proved victorious. With approximately forty-five girls participating in the 1954 ladder tournament, competition was keen. Some of the girls who saw extramural action were Ann Feeney. Janet I ' ghes. and Jean Smedley. Manager Herma Freitag spent many hours giving instruction to those girls who wished to become more adept on the courts. In addition, a mixed doubles tournament was held which attracted both men and women tennis enthusiasts. 89 STUDENT BODY In his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, Dante has presented the drama of man ' s search for perfection. Just as this j reat poem is an adventure in search of freedom, so our four years at West Chester have been an adventure in search of truth, beauty, and harmony. 1 thou, he answered, ' ' ' ' follow hill thy star. Thou ranst not miss at last a glorious haven. CLASS AOyiSERS Mr. Arthur Hawthorne and Miss Ethel Keller. 94 Sophomores of various curricula contribute to the social life of the campus. Reluming to West Chester in the fall, the Sophomore Class was eager to start on its second eventful year of col- lege life. With a hearty cry of Hail! Valkyrie. the Health and Physical Education women were the first to make the campus aware of this energetic class. In the field of sports, Robert Mosteller, Edward Conrad. James Fisher. Donald Gatski, and William Crozier were acclaimed by their fellow classmates, as Marguerite Crowley, Mary Lou Bigony, and Joan Miller cheered them on to victory from the side lines. The entire Sophomore Class combined talents and efforts on October 26, under the able guidance of Miss Ethel Keller and Mr. Arthur Hawthorne, to present the beautiful Twilight Terrace Dance in Ehinger Gymnasium. Elizabeth Gallery and many fellow classmates assisted in making the affair one of the gala events of the year. On April 24, 1954, the student body again praised this industrious class when another successful dance highlighted its array of varied activities. The Sophomore Class may indeed be proud of its officers: Karl (Judenberg, president; Muriel Winn, vice- president; Betsy Wallis, secretary; and Richard Wuest, treasurer. Through cooj)eration and hard work, the Class of ' 56 has made contributions — both academic and social — to cam- pus life. 95 T%X. w s x .: — -- — sr ■t. : 1 96 97 JUNIORS CLASS OFFICERS J. As the curtain falls on the final act of our college life, let us look back on the last few scenes of our production. Under the direction of Daniel Di Salvi, our cast has worked hard for the performance which has brought a round of applause from students, faculty, and friends. The last few scenes in which our members participated were the annual Hallowe ' en Party, the Senior Dinner, and Senior Week-end. In addition, we presented the Christmas tree in the Quad which has always been a highlight in our show. Yes, it can certainly be said that the cast of ' 54 brought down the curtain on a most successful production. SOCIAL COMMITTEE Seated, First Row: C. Steffa. Second Row: M. Brown, P. Yeagle, A. This year, a steady downpour forced party goers to abandon the Quad, usual scene of operations, and continue their merriment in Rec. Hall. Activities consisted of square dancing, entertain- ment, and refr eshments, with a costume parade climaxing festivities. Underclassmen contributed to the success of the venture by providing spe- cial iiooths which proved unique and entertainin?;. Joyce Swendsen and Jack Holmes entertain seniors with cur- rent song hits. An innovation this year on the somewhat traditional agenda of the Senior Class was the dinner honoring January graduates. This function, replacing the customary formal dance, was held in the college dining room on the evening of January 6, 1954. All seniors, both dormitory and day students, were invited to attend. Under the capable direction of the class officers and various class committees, the dinner was highlighted by an informal address given by the President of the College, Dr. Charles S. Swope. Members of the January graduating class also presented entertainment befitting the occasion. The Waynesmen, popular campus quar- tette, present their unique renditions to din- ner guests. DINNER FOR JANUARY GRADUATES Seniors give their attention to the remarks presented by President Swope. no THE MIDWINTER FORMAL The chief social event of the Second Semester at West Chester is the annual Mid-Winter Formal. Under the direction of the Advisory Board, the dance was held this year on Saturday, March 13, in Recreation Hall. Varying shades of blue and silver were used to create an atmosphere of charm and beauty in accordance with the Gershwin-inspired theme, Rhapsody in Blue. Helen Dennis, assisted by Gloria Fava, directed the committees of Day and Dormitory Councils, who combined efforts to contribute to the success of the dance. 112 ' HOTEL DuPONT, WILMINGTON, DELAWARE The Hotel DuPont, Wilmington, Delaware The Gold ' ' tao ttoie OuPo« ' oCvUe senior SENIOR WEEKEND The gala social event in the life of any graduating student at West Chester is Senior Weekend. Held this year on the evenings of April 30 and May 1, the weekend climaxed months of planning by committees composed of class members appointed by Chairman Donald Wright. Friday night, April 30, was the Senior Ball. This dance was held in the splendor of the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel DuPont, Wilmington, Delaware. On Saturday evening. May 1, Seniors again convened — this time at an informal dinner dance held at the Hotel Broadwood in downtown Philadelphia. Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner followed by an evening of dancing. Although Senior Weekend passed quickly, its memories will long remain with members of the Class of 1954. 113 ANN ADAMS . . . Annie-Boo . . .
