Cameron, on whom rests the responsibility of maintaining the college in the front rank of the teacher training institutions of the land. In both scholarship and experience. Dr. Cameron is the worthy successor of the able men who have presided over this institution. He earned the degrees of A.B. and A.M. at Washington College, Maryland, and the degree of Ph.D. at the University of Penn ' sylvania. Few other schoolmen have had such a varied and valuable professional experience as he has been privileged to have. This ranges from teacher in rural schools to college president. It is chiefly, however, in connection with teacher-training institu ' tions and supervisory work that he has become best known and his success in these fields made him the outstanding choice when a new head of the college was to be elected. During the last twenty years he has been in no other kind of professional work, and during that period has held the tollowing positions: Head of Department of Psychology, West Chester State Normal School. Head of Department of Education and Psychology, Western State Normal School, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Director of Training of Teachers, Baltimore, and Principal o( the Baltimore Normal Schools. Superintendent of Schools of Potts- town, Pennsylvania and of Chester, Pennsylvania. Instructor in Summer School at Pennsylvania State College. President of West Chester State Teachers College, West Chester, Pennsylvania. By this dedication we convey to President Norman W. Cameron our message of respect, esteem, and gratitude for the opportunities which we have enjoyed. It is our guarantee of ful cooperation with him in his work ot carrying on worthily. It is our expression of hope that his administration may be long and peaceful, and that It may bear fruitage corresponding to the faithful service which he everywhere and at all times devotedly renders. Class of 1930. Six [ I Sfi ' e Foreword TT IS the purpose of this ■- book to record the activi ' ties in which you were en- gaged while at this institution. Herein are depicted in both words and pictures your work, your pleasures and your ac- complishments. When mem- ory grows dim and the mind wanders back to the days when each moment was a song of joy and each day a bond drawing us nearer and dearer to each other, then turn the pages of this book and live, in memory, more vividly the triumphs and the friendships formed here. Twenty PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE -T EAR Friends of the Graduating Class: f J You have arrived at one of the most important crossroads of life ' s highway. From here your journey will be less guarded and guided, and hence its success will call for the exercise on your part of good judg ' ment, adequate knowledge, and sterling character. Suc- cess cannot be won by assuming a passive attitude toward the problems which will be yours. It is won, for the most part, by dynamic, far-seeing, independent, and intelligent action. Further, success is not measured in terms of personal advancement alone, but as well by the degree to which you create and support significant movements in society, such as will better conditions under which people live. It is such as you, above all others, who are expected to contribute something toward the progress of society. He lives most worthily who serves his fellowman best. In the days of Christ, ' W y ?ieighbor ' connoted every unit of human society. In the years in which your powers will be at their best, ' ' ' ' t v ?ieighbor wil connote not on y those of your community, state, and nation, but more and more those of every nation oi the globe. The more you concentrate your abilities and service to this broader social order, the greater will be your reward and the more surely wil you do credit and honor to those who have contributed to your development. With this thought, I wish for you all the joy that worthy living can bring you. Norman W. Cameron, Twenty-one MR. JOHN R. HOLLINGER N NOVEMBER 4th, the trustees of the college accepted with regret the resignation of Mr. - John R. HoUmger who for the past eighteen years has been closely identified with the business management of the school. An alumnus of the school in the Class of 1910, Mr. Hollinger has since 1911 filled in turn the positions of manager of the bookroom, steward, bursar and business manager. Long terms of service are the rule rather than the exception at West Chester and whole-hearted loyalty to the school has not been rare. Among the men and women to whom the college owes a debt of gratitude and effective service Mr. Hollinger stands conspicuous. His direct responsibility has always been the physical plant of the school and he can point with pride to the condition in which he leaves his work. No other State Teachers College has buildings in better repair or a campus in better condition. The Philips Memorial Building which was erected within the past few years is a substantial tribute to his pluck, perseverance, and money-raising ability. A memorial to a deeply admired principal of the school, this buildin;4 is also a monument to Mr. HoUinger ' s optimism, leadership and grateful affection for a man to whom he owed much. Never limited in his interests to the immediate work of his office and always striving for the welfare of the school, many school projects have had Mr. HoUinger ' s support. He was for a number of years financial manager of the Amuht, a school publication whose name is familiar to all older alumni of the college. His business ability and ingenuity were actively engaged in the difficult task of financing this school paper. Closely identified with the life of the campus, it was inevitable that Mr. Hollinger should become deeply interested in individual students, and this has been the case. His friendly interest and financial help have made a college education, either at West Chester or elsewhere, possible for a number of boys. A man of extraordinary energy, Mr. HoUinger ' s interests have extended far beyond the campus, and in the furtherance of any number of civic projects in the borough, the county and the state he has willingly spent himself Eighteen years is a long time even among busy people where time moves swiftly. In so long a time ties of lasting affection are formed. All those who have known Mr. Hollinger and those of us who have worked with him through the years are unable to escape a feeling of sadness now that other duties and opportunities separate him from the life of the school of which he has for so long been a vital part. It is impossible that he should ever forget the years spent here with their experi- ences, humorous, successful, happy. It is impossible that the school and those who labor in its up- building should ever forget the faithful and efficient service which Mr. Hollinger has rendered here. To him and to his family we arc wishing happiness and success. The genial spirit, the ability to make friends, the business ability which he displayed here he carries with him as instruments and omens of success. And in all the good fortune which we are sure the years will bring him he may be sure that no one will enter more heartily than those who knew and labored with him here. Al- though he goes from West Chester to another field of endeavor, he holds, as he will always hold, his own place in our affectionate regard. Grace D. McCarthy Twenty-two JOHN R. It was indeed an expectant day when we met the Faculty that austere array of men and women who were to decide _ our destinies. That afternoon we embarked on a long journey, ready and | willing to man the ship of life in the years to come. The coxswain warned us that some would totter unless we started early to strengthen our hearts with life-saving study. The high seas and terrible storms, the days of anguish and darkness would claim its toll and at the home port there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Chapter II A much needed and desired vacation brought new vigor and lite and we returned with even more determination. The dangers ot the year were heralded by our predecessors and from the start we lived in fear. Class quiz! ' ' and a cold clammy sweat would appear on the foreheads of some five hundred students. It would require all the lavish prodigality ot thoughts ot a true intellectual anatomist to chronicle all the events of the passing few years; but let us look back to the time when life ' s embarrassing moments were intense and dramatic when the girls chasing around a corner bumped into a group of the male species trom Wayne Hall going nonchalantly into the New Chapel. Ah ! those were the good old days. The scene shifts —let us look back across the interminable chasms of anguish and bitterness of a most dismal sort to days when depression was intense and hearts were saddened, to days when we endeavored to realize that Dr. Smith, principal of our College, was gone forever. The year ended and we passed to the exalted throne of a Junior. One Hundred Thirty Chapter III Another year and out of the dark we emerged to greet the birth of a new hfe. The hardships of it all had been amehorated by advancement. The coveted goal was in sight. But lo! as the sunshine ot the brightest day casts the deepest shadow so the days of a Junior had their trials and tribulations. Weekly, we journeyed to the public schools to observe how this theory of psychology and that theory were practiced on the future men and women ot America. Success and success and success ! Such was our fall of 1929, for then it was that our football team was acclaimed the champion over all the State Teachers Colleges in Pennsylvania. To dwell further on this fruitful and enjoyable year would add length to a story known well to those who have experienced it. So let us go on and consider that majestic seniority. Chapter IV Class meetings, teaching and lectures, but alas, the last lap. Class elections were held, and a battle ensued which made the justly famous Democratic Convention seem like mere child s play. The good ship of state, however, was skippered by Andrew Bowdle who had for his mates and crew Charles Weidner, Louise Emerson and Lucille Fisch. Year books, rings, prom, and picture occupied the fore. Shortly, the final examinations were once more with us, and the solemn look upon the faces of our classmates, the burning of the midnight oil and nervous yet eager anticipation of the students themselves, announced in silent eloquence the incerity of our classmates in their school career. Dame rumor was with us and ' ' Say, have you heard the latest — five seniors are to be flunked? But finally, as a pleasant antidote to the final exams came the acme of ' 30 ' s social achievements - the long awaited Senior Week-End. Small wonder that the Senior Week-End of ' 30 was acclaimed West Chester ' s best, for the entrancing melodies of the orchestra, the charming favors and the all pervading spirit of joie de vivre wove a spell of blissful contentment over everyone present. Would that we could proceed, but this attempted history must now cease, leaving this chapter much unfinished while waiting patiently for destiny ' s stores. We solemnly charge our beneficiaries that they accept these bequests with due reverence, and, insofar as they are able, use them wisely and well. In the evening of their college day let them look back on us, their predecessors, with a kindly thought for memory ' s sake. Therefore, we the class of 1930, being of sound mind and unpre- judiced spirit, do make this our last will and testament. Section I Our robe of superior dignity and our cloaks of knowledge we bestow upon the Class of 1931, to be worn wisely and well at their discretion. Our desires and wishes for the welfare of the college we leave to the undergraduates with the hopes that in their possession these dreams may become realities. Section II To the incoming Freshmen we bequeath our knowledge and opinions of the present undergraduates that our beneficiaries in their traditional Greenness ' ' may overlook neither the faults nor the good qualities of the upper-classmen. To these same beneficiaries, the Class of 1934, we give our well- worn chapel seats and our ability to absorb knowledge emanated from that daily service. This bequest is made to the class of 1934 because we realize the present student body is unworthy of the gift. In the year 1927 this was the first class to enter the State Teachers College at West Chester, and the first to occupy, at the beginning of a new year, the Philips Memorial Building which had been dedicated the latter part of 1926. Not much time was lost in organizing. Profiting by our ancestral advice united we stand, divided we tall, the Junior Highs , Music Supervisors and Health Education students elected Robert C. Alex ' endar, president: Herbert Pearl, vice-president; Arvonia Humphreys, secretary; and Isabel Lamb, treasurer. The group, however, was unable to resist the freshman regulations. Green ribbons, black lisle stockings, and faces devoid of their usual country air decorations were tragic punishments inflicted upon the freshmen. The first year came to a close with the Freshman Folic on April twenty-eighth. With fond memories and eager expectations, the Class of 1931 left the college with a firm resolution to make the following year a more outstanding one. Under the capable leadership ot Robert Alexander as president; Herbert Pearl, vice-president; Ethel Breitinger as secretary, and Dorothy As nip, treasurer, the group remained organized. This year the football I team won the State Championship. Many sophomores displayed their loyalty by helping to fight with every muscle and sinew. Half the dream realized! William Donnelly, president; Charles Cunningham, vice-president; Herbert Pearl, treasurer, and Jennie Rovner, secretary, are carrying on the work this year. The third quarter of our college career is going at an unretarded velocity. The Junior High School group became organized under the name of the Secondary Education Group; the women athletes of the college organized the W. A. A. (Women ' s Athletic Association) under the able leadership of Julia Landis; there was a Junior Prom , a formal dance, followed by a cycle of inter- esting events. Three-quarters of the dream realized! The Class of 1931 is growing stronger, seeking new enterprises, making stronger the old organizations and creating new interests. Many in the class have distinguished them- selves in debating, athletics, music, Y work and other extra-curricular activities. The class is planning to make the senior year its best and to be one of the outstanding graduating classes of the State Teachers College at West Chester. Jennie Rovner. We had to sit back and watch something which we were denied. That something was watching the freshmen go through the regulations prescribed by the student council. At time, those things are a bore, and yet they are some- thing which carry with them tond memories of college days. What fun it was to yell, Hey frosh, where ' s your dink? The opening of college found most of the class back together again. Here and there some one was absent but only a few. The new ones who came in soon became acquainted, and the struggle for greater recognition socially, athletically, and intellectually was formally put under way. I The social activities of the class were mainly confined to acting as the big brothers of the freshmen. This along with the struggle with the other upper-classmen for the coveted position as Lobby leader, was all that took our attention, in a personal way. Of course, we attended the | proms. Why not? The athletic field found us ready to wave our flag and shout just as loud as any of the other classes. Just take a glance at the sophomores who competed on our varsity teams. Notice those boys who played alert foot- ball; who played consistent basketball; who helped the track squad garner enough points to nose out our rivals. Yes, it ' s true that some of the outstanding athletes of the year were sophomores. In the classroom we have our outstanding representatives as does every other class. To mention names would require quite a bit of space, so in brief let us just say, Look at the records . We selected Robert Morrison as president and John Kenny as vice-president, the men to determine the destinies of our class. In ord er that the records of the class should be kept intact we elected Elisabeth Stewart as our secretary. We also elected Charlotte Zeamer, treasurer, to look after the financial affairs of the class. To these people we heartily offer our vote of thanks for the manner in which they have conducted themselves while in office. They have carried out their duties quite notably. Congratulations! Next year will see a new sophomore class. We shall be another junior class. Let us eagerly await to see if our T umbers will be intact, our l hilosophy exact. It is not yet known what has caused this great change -perhaps the soothing climate of West Chester is conducive to greater scholastic effort or perhaps the teachers have been more lenient than heretofore, and the studies s mp ' er. Whatever the cause, the results have been unprecedented. It was immediately noticed how quickly and easily the freshmen adapted themselves to college life. They became one of the happy mob who cheered our team to victory in football and basketball. They exulted in pie night or whispered to one another, We get cocoa today! They even — alas! — received deficient slips at Thanks- giving (of course only to prove their democracy). They accepted praise modestly, and rebuke, silently. They gossiped not, neither did they sin. And so it is fitting that their glorious achievements should be recorded on a tablet of gold, for all the other classes to reverence, and to imitate in vain. Florence H. rrity. ZAENGLE One Hundred J inety-two One Hundred yimetyihee Jamps MacGovern eOACH MacGOVERN, who for the past six years has been building up school tradition which we shall ever be proud of, plans to leave us at the end of the college year. It is rather futile for the student body to try to express their deep regret in his leaving or to express their keen appreciation of the fine influence he has had upon us in both the athletic and scholastic life of the campus. The stamp of his dynamic personahty will stay with us always. Here are some of the things which Coach ' ' thinks are the high ' lights of his six years of coaching at West Chester: 1924-25 In the football season of 1924 we can always point to a splendid victory over Temple University by the score 13-3. In basketball the same year we closed a very successful season with a 64-12 victory over Kutztown. During the last ten minutes we played with four men on the floor, all others being disqualified by personal fouls. This gave us the State title — a truly great team. 1925-26 Football 1925 marked the opening of football relations with Blooms ' burg. West Chester won 13-0. That year the gridmen started using the bright gold jerseys rather than the purple and were called the Yellow- jackets in the sport world. Millersville met defeat 76-0. 1926-27 Football West Chester, 19— Shippensburg, 15. Here was the battle of battles. The referee, now a renowned official, told Coach after the game that it was the greatest exhibition of fight and determination he had ever seen. There was never such evidence of school and community spirit as was exhibited at that game. B a One Hundred } inety-four I5 It does not seem fair to point to ,iny individual player. But Ned ' ' Hopkins ' generalship and all around playing; Jack Stott ' s tight and de- termination carrying on, though badly injured; Dalton ' s and Bales ' great end play and Herb Rathey ' s and Captain Bennett ' s line play will long be remembered. 1927 28 Football Captain Jack Stott ' s great team won seven out ot eight games to score 196 points as against 19 for the opponents. The most notable victory was against Shippensburg by the score of 21-0. Great support was given by the student body, band, and town folks. Over 200 telegrams were sent to the team, wishing for victory. To the Coach ' s way of thinking it was the greatest team we ever had, having speed, power and football sense. Though losing the state title to Stroudsburg, it was a great team. Basketball Our first year as a Teachers College and we won the state title. The outstanding game of the year was with Mansfield, winning 34-32 in an extra tive-minute period which decided the championship. 1928-29 Football Won the State title and had an undefeated tearn. West Chester, 13; Stroudsburg, 0. A very clean cut victory, but a hard-fought battle. 1929-30 Football. This marked an entrance into College football world. No more prep schools by Colleges and Te achers Colleges. West Chester, 12; Drexel, 0; will long be remembered by all West Chester, adherents. Incidentally, Drexel had an undefeated team in ' 28 and had practically the same team back in ' 29. Captain Singer ' s, Atkinson ' s, Dimm ' s and Zaengle ' s plays were outstanding, though every man who saw service functioned beautifully. The victory over Stroudsburg, giving us the district title, was like- wise an outstanding one. The Coach trusts that we can always point to these highlights as real achievements and that they will be an incentive for greater deeds. Werdemoyer, D. Roper, P. Hawk, A. Gualco, M. Bass DREXEL T IGHT thousand roaring rooters packed the Drexel Stadium in r Philadelphia on Saturday, September 21 to see the Golden Avalanche of West Chester grind the Drexel Dragons unmercifully in the turf. This game was the official debut of West Chester into College Football ranks, which, incidentally, was carried on in a quite impressive fashion to the score of 12-0. A few minutes after the start, West Chester swung into high gear, with a powerful running attack. The backs, Zaengle, Dimm, Path and Atkinson pierced the Drexel ine and skirted the ends with furious thrusts. The drive terminated in a touchdown by Zaengle, West Chester ' s line cracker. West Chester again drew blood when action was resumed in the second half. Captain Motts Singer of West Chester who played fine ball all afternoon, shone with great br liancy when he intercepted a Drexel pass and ran seventy-five yards through a broken field to make the second and last touchdown of the day. m i VJJJS; One Hundred J metyseven r ' Vf i TRENTON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE y RENTON State Teachers College proved to be the second victim ot the onslaught of the Golden Avalanche line on Saturday, October 5. The boys from th e State of big and plentiful mosquitoes put up a great tight but were completely outclassed to the tune of 27-2. The visitors drew blood in the first period by recovering a blocked kick which resulted in a safety. However, West Chester would not be out-done in the halt. Dimm of West Chester swept around left end for sixty-eight yards and a touchdown, a beautiful exhibition of broken field running. The Golden Avalanche got down to the business of the day in the second halt. A series of end runs and line plunges netted some sixty yards for another touchdown. Shortly after, Zaengle, West Chester ' s hard-hitting back, tore twenty yards otf right tackle for another touchdown. Sasso completed the day ' s entertainment with a fifty-eight yard run around left end tor the fourth touchdown. One Hundred AJiiietv-cigfil BLOOMSBURG y HE boys from Bloomsbur g State Teachers College were the feature i_J attraction on Saturday, October 12. As this was the first Penn- sylvania State Teachers College game, one was ableto get a good line on the ability of the Golden Avalanche. Incidentally, the exhibition proved quite satisfactory, the score being 25-0, with West Chester on the long end. West Chester started a furious driving attack which they continued throughout the entire game. The first touchdown was a result ot a return of a punt some sixty-eight yards by Doyle, down into the promised land. Shortly after, another drive resulted n Dimm ' s crashing across Bloomburg ' s goal line tor the second touchdown. After the beginning of the second half Atkinson, West Chester ' s quarterback, reversed his field twice, then made twenty-eight yards for the third touchdown. The last drive of the day netted West Chester the fourth touchdown, the ball being carried over by Johnson. One HuiidreJ i it ' Iv inie GOLDEY ( HE Golden Avalanche completely smothered Goldey College of ( Wilmington here on Friday, October 18 in a rather one-sided affair. The game ended with West Chester far in the lead 41-0. Shortly after the beginning of the game. White of West Chester shot off tackle for the first touchdown. A safety followed closely on the heels of this touchdown. Path of West Chester com.pleted the scoring in the first halt with a plunge through the center of the line tor still another touchdown. Score 15-0. A few minutes after the engagement was resumed in the second half Zaengle threw a long pass to the waiting arms of Path tor the third touch- down tor West Chester. Sasso kept the good work up with a long run for the fourth touchdown ot the day. A few minutes later, Sasso again duplicated his performance with another touchdown. The sixth and last touchdown of the day for West Chester came as a result of a twenty-yard pass, Seldon to Johnson. Two Huniirei ST. JOSEPH 7 = HE Great Golden Avalanche swept into the City of Brotherly (O Love on Saturday, October 26, but for the first time in three years the grinding onslaught of the Ava ' anche was completely checked. Incidentally, this fact was accomplished by the clawing Hawks of St. Joseph ' s College. The engagement was marked with a great deal ot straight football with each team concentrating on a defensive game. However, St. Joe ' s came out of their shell m the third period and made a great drive which resulted in the lone touchdown of the day. The score was 6-0. Captain Motz ' Singer, Zaengle and Dimm played a great game for West Chester, while Walker, St. Joe ' s big line cracking fullback, bore the brunt of the offensive and defensive work. In the third period Captain Gricco and Walker of St. Joe ' s ripped and wriggled their way over some forty-five yards of hard-earned territory which resulted in Walker ' s garnering the lone touchdown. Tu.. Hundred One STROUDSBURG STROUDSBURG proved to be West Chester ' s fifth victim of the 1929 College football year in the annual classic of the Eastern Section ot State Teachers Colleges, on Saturday, November 2. West Chester played brilliant ball through the entire game. A powerful running and passing attack netted the Golden Avalanche fourteen points, while Stroudsburg, whose ground work was completely stopped through- out the entire game, took to the air in the fourth period to obtain their lone touchdown. The first whistle found West Chester well m the lead to the tune of 14-7- In about the middle of the first half with the ball in m d-field, West Chester drove down into Stroudsburg ' s territory with long runs and passes, and with the ball on the twenty-yard line Atkinson of West Chester sent a pretty pass into the waiting arms of Yaskewisz, West Chester ' s big end, for the first touchdown of the day. The second half found West Chester making another drive which started in midfield and ended over the line. Lots of straight football and a pass did the trick. The touchdown was made by Path. Stroudsburg retaliated, however, with a long pass by Nejoha to Roedel for a touchdown. I II Two Htijuiral Two MILLERSVILLE 7 HE defeat ot Millersville on Saturday, November 9, by the score ot 13-0 gave us the Eastern District State Teachers College Cham- pionship of Pennsylvania. The West Chester B team saw action the entire first half and made the game a nip-and-tuck affair. They juggled back and forth in midheld with neither team in very great danger. The First team was sent into the fray in the second half and from then on the game was never in doubt. The Golden Avalanche ripped their way down the field for some forty yards for the first touchdown which was made by Sasso, West Chester ' s clever fullback. Close on the heels of their first touchdown came another by West Chester as a result of a blocked punt by Cox, West Chester ' s guard. With the ball on Millers- ville ' s thirty-yard line Sasso sent a long pass into the arms of Trostle who was well in the promised land , for the second and last touchdown of the day. wo Hu7i(ired vrii SLIPPERY ROCK ( 7 ' HE Green and White of Slippery Rock played the Golden Ava ' l lanche of West Chester to a standstill in the grand finale of the year, Saturday, November 16, which incidentally was for the championship of the state. The hoys from the West unloosed one of the strongest attacks that West Chester had perhaps ever met. The backs, Gumbert, Hartman, Stoner and Lutz of Slippery Rock ripped and tore their way to a hard ' earned victory to the score of 13-6. It was a great game. Both teams drew blood in the first half. Slippery Rock drove down the field in series of line plunges and end runs terminated by Stover who dashed over the goal line. West Chester came back strong, however, with the aid of a beautiful eighty-yard return of a kick-off by Sasso. Atk nson took it over to tie the score. In the second half Slippery Rock started another great running attack from mid-tield, pounding the tackles with strong reverse plays which took the ball down the field. Lutz took it over for the touchdown through the center of the line. TiAo Kundred Vo AlKI N ' , MfUI FOOTBALL 1929 SEASON w. c. OPP. Coicli Basketball = HE lid was pried off West Chester ' s 1930 Basketball season at i_J Elizahethtown College on January 9, with a decisive victory for I Hij West Chester. The Purple and Gold passers got a commanding lead shortly after the opening whistle which was never threatened through ' out the entire game. Captain Herb Pearl and Connie ' ' Conrad led the West Chester scoring. West Chester ran into a tough one in Kutstown S. T. C. at Kutztown on January 18. The Purple and Gold outfit were completely swamped by a shower of points, some forty-one to West Chester ' s seventeen. This game was the first State Teachers College engagement of the year. Millersville proved to be a tartar for West Chester here on January 25, in the first home game of the year. Though Millersville was never headed off, the game was exceedingly fast and close. MacLean took the burden of the offensive for West Chester, caging tour field goals. Two Himdrcd Sv West Chester drew blood again by the means of a whirlwind finish at Edinboro S. T. C. at Edinboro on January 31. The Purple and Gold trailed the losers the entire first half. But ;n the second half MacLean and Conard, West Chester ' s eagle-eyed basketeers, got going, scoring from all angles. MacLean sewed up the game with a pretty double decker just as the whistle blew, giving West Chester a one-point lead 37 36. West Chester basketeers lost a heart breaker when they were nosed out in the last minute of play at Slippery Rock S. T. C. on February 1 to the tune of 29 28. The boys of the Purple and Gold kept in the lead almost the entire game with the aid of fine shooting by Captain Pearl, Conrad and MacLean, but it just wasn ' t West Chester ' s day. Trenton S. T. C. gave West Chester a lot of trouble at Trenton on February 8. The game was marked by close guarding and clever shooting. It was a fight to the finish, with Trenton doing the finishing in the latter part of the second half by getting a lead of four points bring- ing the score to 29-25. The Purple and Gold again were the victims ot Millersveill ' s clever aggregation at Millersvi le on February 15. (Incidentally the Millersville cagers won the State Teachers basketball championship and it was well deserved). The score was even up in the first halt, but Mil ersville forged out into the lead in the second half to get a four point edge as the final whistle blew, 30-26. Hard luck seemed to be trailing close to West Chester when they dropped another exciting whirlwind finish game to Drexel College at Philadelphia on February 25. West Chester led right up to five minutes of the end of the game, when Drexel got away to win, 37-35. Donald of West Chester was high man for the evening with sixteen points. West Chester came back strong against Mansfield S. T. C. at Mans- field on March 1, with an impressive victory. The game was never in doubt, winding up 29-17 in the favor of West Chester. Donald again held the spotlight tor the evening. West Chester revenged an early season trouncing here on March 8 by taking Kutztown S. T. C. over to the tune of 38-35. The game was exceedingly tast and much spectacular shooting was in evidence on the part ot both sides. It was a great game to close the season with. Two Hundred Seven 1930 BASKETBALL W. C. OPP. WATERS, a graduate of Syracuse University and former coach ot West Hampton Beach High School, Long Island, entered our portals as a teacher in the Health Education Department and coach of Soccer and Track, in the fall of 1927. Since then he has established a fine record, turning out three crack soccer teams and three superb track teams, one ot which is in the making. He has to his credit two straight State Teachers College Champion- ships in track which is a feat in itself. Coupled with this, he has put on the field a winning soccer team, which is no mean accomplishment. His success in athletic competitions is characteristic of the man A fine personality and a hard worker both on the field and n his classes, he has gained the deep respect and keen appreciation of the student body. il Two Hundred T ine 1st Rom -Joe Kerr, A. The Normal boys showed the r appreci ' tion by taking three pieces of the cake of goals while West Chester obtained only one. But West Chester boys are perfect gentlemen, don ' t you know, and decided to do their kicking at the next party. On the following Saturday, West Chester again ran into some stiff opposition when they stacked up against a clever outfit from Girard College. The whole game was marked with br lliant play ng on the part of both teams. This, combined with the closeness of the scoring, made it a fine game. Each team sent a shot apiece through the bars in the first and second period and two in the third. But the fourth period proved to be West Chester ' s jinx when the Girard dribblers forged ahead and netted two counters before the final whistle. West Chester went down to the third defeat of the year in a hard fought contest with the University of Delaware here on Friday, October 25. The boys from Delaware sent three sizzling shots into the net; while West Chester succeeded in getting only one marker, which was made by Williams, West Chester ' s clever center forward. On Wednesday, November 9, we found the soccer men out for blood in an exciting fray with Haverford College. With the score a one-one tie at the close of the official game time an extra period was played in which West Chester kicked two shots through the bars to win the game. Captain Bowdle, Horn, and Allison played superb soccer for West Chester. Stroudsburg was the next of West Chester ' s victims in a fast and closely contested match here on Friday, November 15. The boys o[ the Purple and Gold booted two pretty shots into the net and succeeded in holding Stroudsburg scoreless throughout the entire game. Allison and Ottaviano of West Chester did the trick with a goal apiece. West Chester tasted defeat again in the last game of the season against the Penn J. V ' s at Philadelphia, on Wednesday, November 20. The game was hard fought, but Penn succeeded in clicking four times to West Chesters ' three. Allison, Horn, and Kelly played a bang-up game for West Chester. B Two Hundred Eleven tAf HuNSBtRGtR, Miiiuger SOCCER 1929 W. C. OPP. It is from the burning cinders set off by West Chester ' s track aspirants as they go through their paces under the careful tutelage and watchful eyes of Coach Waters. There are such men out there grinding away as Wilson, Schoff, Kunkle, MacLean and Seltzer in the track events; and George, Hohensheld, Hontz and Noe in the field events, all of last year ' s great team. Combined with the old timers is a wealth of new freshman material which looks good. Our worthy opponents may depend upon having lots of competition again this year. We are running into exceedingly strong opposition this year, with the Middle Atlantics being the biggest stake, and the S. T. C. Championship a close second. Without a doubt, the Purple and Gold harriers will push through for another successful season. Baseball Schedule for 1930 April 15— Goldey College at W. C. April 26— Washington College at W. C. Three years ago baseball was given up as a major sport, in favor of spring football, at this college. This year under the capable leadership oi Leo Atkinson we again challenge all comers for supremacy on the diamond. Baseball is in the air, and West Chester has again placed a team upon the field that promises to leave honorary marks in the baseball history of teachers ' colleges of this state. T. ..
