Just so, we feel, it has taken our Destinies and re- shaped them, giving us new ideals and standards of perfection. With this humbly in mind, and with a keen sense of responsibility, as well as hopefulness, we dedicate this book to the Undying Spirit of Progress and the Future of this Institution as a College. jforrtoortr r |IO THE CLASS OF 1928: I A record of the things you and your classmates have done • , I during the past year, a record of the obstacles you have met and overcome, and a record of the goals you have struggled for and obtained — all are here, in this Serpentine, your College Annual. This year begins a new era for our College, holding unlimited possibilities and increased opportunities. When the now far-distant Future becomes the Present, when this book carries you in memory back to your Alma Mater days, we hope that it will afford you keen enjoyment. COLLEGE SONG Our hearts, overflowing with joy and with praise, Right lustily now we our voices will raise And laud thee, fair place we have learned to revere, Thou State Teachers College, to all of us dear. We look with devotion upon thy green walls; We lovingly linger within thy blest halls. Rare merrTries around thee shall ever abide; Thy name we shall chorus with gladness and pride. We cherish most fondly the red, white, and blue, Our country ' s choice colors to which we are true; But hoist we beside them, with glory untold, Our own lovely banner of purple and gold. We look upon blossoms in garden and field; Rejoice in the exquisite fragrance they yield; But none like our school-flower with meaning is fraught, The golden-eyed pansy, bright emblem of thought. To thee we ' ll be loyal, whatever betide; Thy lessons forever our conduct shall guide; Our thoughts will be with thee wherever we dwell; Thy virtues most gladly we always shall tell, Thy fame we shall foster, thine honor uphold, While proudly uplifting the purple and gold. Rich blessings rest on thee from Heaven above! We pledge thee our service, we give thee our love. Francis Harvey Green. WAYNE HALL RECITATION HALL MODEL SCHOOL 4; O DR. ANDREW THOMAS SMITH A.M., Lafayette College; Ph.D., New York University N THE evening of February 15, 1928, after a painful illness of many weeks, Dr. Andrew Thomas Smith, principal emeritus of the West Chester State Teachers College, passed into the life everlasting. Seldom is an individual connected with an institution by so many ties as bound Dr. Smith to this College. Not only was he an alumnus of the school in the Class of 1883, but he filled for longer or shorter terms the positions of teacher, vice- principal, acting-principal, principal, and principal emeritus. Even in the years when he was principal of another State Normal School, he was, in a way, unofficially connected with this school through the Board of Normal School Principals. In all these relationships he gave the school faithful and loyal service, spending himself and being spent for her final good. But faithfully and loyally as Dr. Smith served the school, his field of usefulness was not limited to this institution. At the Mansfield State Teachers College, where he was principal for seventeen years, he is gratefully remembered as an able administrator and one who played a large part in the develop- ment of the school. The West Chester Civic Association, the Lions Club, the Chester County Historical Association, and the Westminister Presbyterian Church, of which he was a charter member, all shared a part of Dr. Smith ' s time and attention. As a valued and experienced member of the Board of Normal School and Teacher College Principals, and par- ticularly as a membe r of the State Retirement Board, he served well the cause of education in the Commonwealth. Quiet, dignified, gracious, he gave all with whom he came in contact courteous consideration. In his passing the school and the community have lost a loyal friend, a faithful servant — one who has joined the choir invisible of those immortal dead who live again in lives made better by their presence. Grace D. McCarthy 16 ■v HP ilH ■r ■y H IQf. 9 . flf DR. ANDREW THOMAS SMITH D ' DR. NORMAN W. CAMERON R. NORMAN W. CAMERON, inaugurated February 6, 1928, as the sixth principal of the State Teachers College at West Chester, Pennsylvania, was born in Cecil County, Maryland, September 27, 1876, and passed with high rank through public schools, academy, college, and university, earning his A.B. and A.M. degrees from Washington College, Maryland, and his degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. Few school men have had such varied and valuable professional ex- perience as has Dr. Cameron. This ranges from teacher of rural schools to college principal. In fields outside of those in which he has been specifically employed, he has rendered extensive and valuable service, as lecturer at teachers ' institutes, as speaker on educational programs of national and state associations, and as writer for educational magazines. In addition, he has, from time to time, held membership on various im- portant committees connected with the National Educational Associa- tion of the United States, and also in various other organizations, edu- cational, civic, and fraternal. Extensive travel in foreign countries has provided Dr. Cameron with a wealth of knowledge and experience which makes him a most interest- ing and attractive personality. No better characterization perhaps could be made than that given by Dr. Frank Pierrepont Graves, Com- missioner of Education of New York, who recently said of him : He is a man of great natural ability, has splendid training, a large and rich experience. He is to me a very attractive man personally and I know that he wins friends easily and retains their confidence in him as a man and educator. It is fortunate that almost at the outset of a new era in its history this time-honored institution has as its leader one of such broad experience who professionally stands so high, one who above all things else is human and is endowed with an abundance of good common sense. Under his guidance this College must quickly take rank in the very fore- front of teacher-training institutions. Dr. Cameron married Miss Lulu M. Serht, a former Baltimore teacher, and a member of an old and respected family of Baltimore. They have two children, Norman W., Jr., and Caroline, and now reside in West Chester. R. F. How was I expected to write an original class prophecy in four days, as busy as I was with lesson plans, notebooks, and what not? To my way of thinking it simply could not be done. All that day I pondered over the problem; bedtime arrived, and I was no nearer the solu- tion than before. I heard the lobby clock strike eleven, then half past, and still my mind was absolutely blank. Gracious, had I no ideas at all? Suddenly I was no longer staring into the blackness of the room but was in an altogether strange place. I was standing with a package of books on my arm at the kitchen door of a bungalow in the suburbs of some city. I had become a book-peddler. I knocked on the door, which opened with a jerk. Startled, I glanced up, and there, attired in a large white apron, sleeves rolled up, stood John Weir. A feminine voice just then rang through the house. I recognized it as belonging to Grace Hoopes, who was now Mrs. Weir, and editor of one of the city newspapers. As I reached the next house, a large automobile drew up, and out of it stepped a young woman whom I had once known as Beatrice Pursell. She said that she made a special trip up there to ask Dave ' Lewis to give a talk to the Easton Woman ' s Club, of which she was president. Mr. Lewis, I learned, was a prominent lawyer. Again the scene changed, and I was in the midst of Philadelphia ' s crowds. Not wishing to begin my work immediately, I entered the courthouse. To my surprise I saw that Midge Lynch was up for trial. I overheard someone say that she had been brought up for a too strict enforcement of the blue laws. I noticed that Berenice Sundel and Mattie Sacriste were members of the jury. Picking up a newspaper lying near me, I glanced at the society page. Here I saw a picture of a social gathering of Philadelphia ' s smart set and was delighted to find there the pictures of three girls I had known at College: Betty Haines, Lillian Keevil, and Lillian Jeffers. Leaving the courthouse, I wandered slowly along with the crowds, glanc- ing absent-mindedly into the shop windows. A striking ice-cream advertise- ment attracted my attention, and I stopped to examine it more closely. On investigation, I saw the name of the designer, Richard Head, signed in the corner. How odd that a talented artist such as Dick Head should so lower himself as to be a designer of ice-cream signs. I looked at the card. Ah, I need wonder no longer. It advertised the Creamless Ice Cream Company, owned and operated by Helen Weir. I now decided to visit West Chester, wishing to renew my acquaintance with my Alma Mater. My curiosity took me immediately to the Dean of 110 w (_ 1 ' : Women ' s office. There sat Toddy Meredith in the Dean ' s chair. In the ensuing conversation, she told me that Jack Stott was the coach of the victorious football team and Ruth Becker head of the History Department. After leaving the school, I visited the Opera House. The first act of vaudeville consisted of the antics of two colored comedians. Believing I knew their voices, I listened sharply, and recognized some of the wise cracks I had heard at the College from the lips of Ned Hopkins and Paul Troxell. In the next act was another colored gentleman who sang Giddy-up Napoleon, It Looks Like Rain. The identity of this person was not hard to guess. It was Frances Fearon. The landscape now took on a different aspect. I was confronted with a large, rambling farmhouse on the porch of which were gathered a large group of people, many of whom I recognized as West Chester Alumni. I was greeted by Ernest Smedley who, in partnership with Vernon Jackson, owned the farm. I saw Mickey Bales among the guests and was told that he was a famous pole-vaulter, having made the Olympic Team. Walter Trott was also among those present. He was now principal of Darlington Seminary. I accepted an invitation to stay for the evening, after learning that Les Garman ' s celebrated orchestra had been engaged for dancing, and Elsie Brenker, a Metropolitan Opera star, had graciously consented to sing for her former classmates. Unfortunately, I never witnessed this event, for again I was carried away to another scene. This time I was in the Reading Terminal, waiting for a train. All aboard for Phoenixville, Norristown, Reading, Hazleton — I started at the familiar sound of the voice. Ah, yes, I was right. Who but Alice Ferry could shout like that? I heard my train called, and as I was walking toward the door I met Pearl Rice. She said that she was teaching school in Easton. At last! A girl who was what she had set out to be — a school-teacher. I left her just in time to see my train pull out. But instead of the noise of the locomotive growing less distinct as the distance increased, it was be- coming more intense. I sleepily opened my eyes and listened. So that was it! I would be willing to wager that this was the first time the dinky was ever mistaken for a train. Well, my problem was solved at last, so I quickly reached for paper and pencil before I should forget my amusing and interesting experiences. Ill I CLASS WILL T is a scientific law that no matter can be created or destroyed; its form and the combinations it may take are infinite. In the whirligig of this cosmos, the Class of ' 28 was created. To everything comes an end. Father Time, with his scythe, takes toll; even the Class of ' 28 must yield. During our stay at our Alma Mater, in preparation for the life which we are about to take up we have developed traits both as a Class and as individuals; it is desirable that these be passed on to those qualified to uphold them in a manner befitting their station. Therefore, the Class of ' 28 makes the follow- ing bequests to the beneficiaries herein named: First: To our Alma Mater, our loyalty and everlasting friendship. Second: To the Class of ' 29 the privilege of sustaining the scholastic, social, and athletic record which we established. Third: To the Faculty, memories of our brilliancy and the unalloyed pleasure which they will undoubtedly bring them. Fourth: To the incoming Freshmen, the uncanny realization of their posi- tion (so pleasing in the Class of 31), the pleasures of entrance tests, psychol- ogy, and the development of a professional attitude. Fifth. To all those who are eligible, either by nature, good looks or ac- quired characteristics, our holdings in the Bank of the Campus and its minor subdivisions, such as the Model School, Lobby, Stadium, and Library. Sixth. To any who may be indebted to us intellectually, financially, or socially, we do hereby declare them absolved from any and all such obli- gations. Certain of our classmates have in their persons embodied virtues. We as a unit have decided that it is necessary for the welfare of the school that these virtues be handed down to those of the undergraduates most able to per- petuate them. Therefore, we will to the following these qualities; see that you keep them in their pristine glory. 1. Rambo, who, after a hard struggle with Thompson, was elected captain of the Lobby Team of ' 28, leaves the responsibility of captaining the Team of 20 to Leroy Dimm, Class of ' 31. 2. Nate Wagner leaves his talkativeness to Herb McCollom. 3. To Ginny Fry, Betty Haines popularity. 4. Mitzi Stryker leaves her brilliancy in astronomical science to June Keller. 112 5. To Gene Deakins, Dave Lewis ' place as the well ' dressed man of the school. 6. To Sammy Morrison, McGowan ' s self-appreciation. 7. Tony Angley ' s way with women to his roommate, Jimmy Aikms. 8. Midge Lynch ' s ability to keep the corridors clear to Billie Bray. 9. To Ida Phillips, a successor to Danny. 10. Trott ' s ability as a student to Kelly. n. Amnos Evans ' voice to Sil Siller. 12. Spector ' s assiduity in library work to Isaac Scott. 13. Troxell ' s technique on apparatus to Bill Jones. 14. Yocom ' s technique with the fair sex to Male Porter, i . Eddie Sones ' devotion to Terpsichore to Anita Guaico. 16. Alice Ferry leaves the song Broken-hearted to Dot Roper. 17. Virginia Kossifos leaves the leadership of the Girls ' Orchestra to Lois Leidich. After long and careful consideration these are the qualities which we have selected to be passed on; if anyone has been neglected ' tis not from lack of merit but from over-abundance. This is our final will and testament. May the provisions herein be faithfully and carefully carried out. Class of ' 28 113 WHO ' S WHO 114 ' I WHO ' S WHO IN THE SENIOR CLASS IN AN attempt to give merit where merit is due, the following have been selected as individuals most outstanding for their contribution to the Extra-Class Activities of the College, i. I • DEBATING INSTEAD of having a College Team carry our colors in the Inter-Normal Debates, the Moore and Aryan Societies each selected a team which represented West Chester State Teachers College. All three debates were on the question: Resolved, That the present petit jury system be abolished. The first was with Millersville, March 16. The Aryan Team, taking the negative side, consisted of: Samuel Morrison, Margaret Sorber, Irene Scarbonovitch, Elizabeth Russell, alternate. After a unanimous victory for West Chester, a small reception was held in the lobby of Old Main. The same evening the Moore team — upholding the affirmative side, was defeated at Shippensburg. Members of the team were: Bernice Jarman, Margaret Joyce, Elizabeth Eby, Margaret Connell, alternate. On April 27 the third debate with Stroudsburg was held. Our team, chosen from the two Society teams, included: Samuel Morrison, Margaret Joyce, Margaret Sorber, Elizabeth Russell, alternate. Never before has interest in debating been so great, and the year has given us some spirited and most interesting controversies. Faculty Committee Dr. Charles W. Heathcote, Chairman Miss M. ADVISOR-ADVISEE SYSTEM ADVISOR-ADVISEE RECEPTION, SEPTEMBER 16 This year, in order to make all new girls feel at home and to prevent a serious epidemic of homesickness, each upper classman was asked to advise or look after a Freshman girl. This Senior Advisor was to see that her Advisee was at College at the designated time, was properly enrolled, settled in her room, learned a few of the more important rules by reading her Handbook, and, in general, got acquainted with the place. To further this getting acquainted idea, a reception was given in the Gymnasium. Each Advisor acted as the escort to her Advisee, made out a dance program for her, saw that she met her partners and introduced her to everyone she knew. Of course, there was the long reception line, which gave the new girls a chance to meet the Faculty and important members of the student body. There were trick dances and clever ways of meeting new people, as well as delicious punch and cookies. It was a huge success and the new girls left with the idea that College wasn ' t such a cold, cruel, place after all. FRESHMAN RULES, SEPTEMBER 26-OCTOBER 10 PAJAMA PARADE, OCTOBER 6 Girls — No dates! — No cosmetics! — No hairpins! — Black stockings! — No hats! — Green Bands! Men! — No dates! — Black socks! — Black ties! — No cigarettes (for self)! The Everlasting Dink! Yes! Nothing but West Chester ' s Freshman Rules! Quite a serious matter to some who disobeyed — er-er-now, why bring that up? The bans were finally lifted and Green Bands became but a part of Memory Books although the Dink goes on forever. Hear, and attend, and listen!! The Freshmen of Wayne Hall were going to do something besides sit in the Lobby and look scared. One lovely starlit evening they, clad in luscious and exotically colored pajamas, preceded by the College band playing Lydia Pinkham and other college songs, paraded up town, around the main streets, and then wended their weary way homeward to Wayne Field and a gorgeous bon- fire. The men, particularly Seniors, enjoyed it heaps; the girls did nothing but bewail the manifold Fates that kept them inside Old Main, and raced from one end of the building to the other, trying to see everything. 150 VESPER SERVICES, EVERY SUNDAY AT 4 P.M. Our loveliest innovation, and one worthy of cur highest commendation, is the weekly Vesper Service held m our Chapel. The Y. W. C. A. has charge of it and has introduced to those who attend, many noteworthy speakers, soloists, and organists, among whom are : Speakers — The Rev. Mr. John Hart, unofficial chaplain of the University of Pennsylvania. The Rev. Mr. Evans, from Hyattsville, Md. Dr. Reuben E. Harkness, Crozer Theological Seminary. The Rev. Mr. Milton H. Nichols, Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Pa. Miss Margaret Blaine, Secretary of the Student Volunteer Movement. Soloists — Clyde R. Dengler of University of Pennsylvania Quartet. Larry Ginter, West Chester. Organists — Sam Barber, West Chester. One of the most impressive services was held on March 4. It was dedicated to the memory of our beloved Dr. Andrew Thomas Smith, and was a fitting tribute to him. Mr. William E. Bretz was at the organ while Miss Catharine Knoll was the soloist. The Chorus of Music Supervisors sang the anthems. The service was as follows: Organ: Largo Handel-Kraft Hymn 77 Anthem: Oh, Taste and See Goss Scripture Reading: The Rev. Mr. Williamson Solo: Oh, Rest in the Lord Mendelssohn Prayer: The Rev. Mr. Williamson Anthem: Ave Maria Abt Organ : In Death ' s Strong Grasp Bach Anthem: Oh, Savior of the World Coss Hymn 48 Anthem: Lead, Kindly Light Smith Organ: Andante Francl{ TROPHY NIGHT, JANUARY 7 Instead of the old system of handing out athletically awarded letters individually in Chapel, each team received its letters as a group, at an evening set aside for the event. Various Faculty members, the College Band, and Cheer Leaders, were all assembled on the stage. The program consisted of a band selection, several College songs, after which Coach MacGovern introduced Miss Elizabeth Mans, Chairman ot the American Association of Field Hockey, who gave a very interesting talk on the history of this sport. Mr. Charles Steele, coach of Athletics at Bellville, N. J., spoke o f the values 151 w of athletics. Mr. Swope presented the awards to the winners of the Freshman Song and Cheer Contest held last fall. They both received appropriately engraved gold pencils, Mr. Harry Haig for his cleverly written song and Miss Anna Coyne for her peppy cheer. Mr. Waters awarded the college W ' s to Captain Smedley and thirteen members of the soccer team. Since Miss Schriver had been called away, Coach Mac- Govern presented letters to the winning hockey team — the freshman Health Education Girls. Numerals awarded to the other four teams were presented to the captains. Coach MacGovern then told several famous football jokes which were followed by the presentation of the gold footballs. Frank Bennett ' s excellent work was acknowledged and the entire College extended Captain John Stott and Captain-Elect Ned Hopkins its best wishes. The program ended with a band selection, the Fight Song, and Alma Mater. A greater success for any event, in its debut, cannot be imagined, and this is sure to become a tradition of West Chester. At the end of the next semester there will be a second Trophy Night. SOCIETY NIGHTS-EVERY SATURDAY EVENING SOCIETY RUSH SEASON The improvement in the Society Weekly programs this year has been so marked that we consider them an innovation. Each Society has one meeting a month, the other Saturdays being appropriated by clubs of the College. Dancing in the Gymnasium from 6. jo to 8 p.m. just puts one in the mood for an entertaining evening. No one is disappointed, for such clever, original themes as well as remarkably carned-out programs prove to everyone that they are the product of true Literary Clubs. Just to mention a few: i . Aryan Scottish Evening. 2. Stephen Foster Evening, j. Moore Plays. (a) The Robbery by Samuel French. (b) The Mayor and the Manicurist by Samuel French. The Societies have developed along other lines as well, for this year they both conducted a Rush Season — almost like frat rushes. What a College we are getting to be!! One received invitations to a Moore Tea on January 24, a Moore Dance on January 27, and an Aryan Dance on January 26, not to mention the Smoker held in Wayne Hall. Rivalry was intense, but the climax was reached when the Moore banner hung from the top of the Chapel all day and when, at dinner, January 27, the Aryans appropriated the Annex Dining-room, decorated it, treated all old and new members with Chocopiks, and sang Aryan songs which were led by Mr. Forrest Free. Hu- man nature is prone towards feasting and dancing. Result — every student is now either a Moore or an Aryan. 152 INHERENTLY WEST CHESTER Our College prides itself upon the fact that it celebrates certain events just a bit differently from any other place, making them, thereby, West Chester ' s own. WHITE SUPPER— CAROL SERVICE— DECEMBER 21 White dresses! White candles! Christmas carols! All of the lovely parts of our White Supper! It originated in our College many years ago and is now one of our most prized traditions. Then, later, more wonderful than ever before in our new Chapel with our new organ, like a procession of white-robed taper-bearing priestesses, like a chorus of angel songs, like all the most sacred Chnstmasy things our traditions hold, was our unique Carol Service. This year, a boy soprano, Ross Fisher, of Harrisburg, sang the solo parts of Fall on Your Knees. He was ably assisted by the various choruses of the student body. Then, too, who can ever forget the lovely effect of Silent Night sung to represent a Symphony Orchestra? This evening, the last before our Christmas Recess, was just one more of those which we shall treasure in our hearts after we leave College. WASHINGTON RECEPTION— FEBRUARY 22 Come! Let us tread a measure. Grave! Haughty! Stately! Prim and slow! Just so was the minuet danced by the following members of the Senior Class: Edna Sones, Ruth Henry, Verna Knoll, Frances Johnson, Walter Trott, John Dalton, Benjamin Heathenngton, and William Benner. This lovely and appropriate observance of our great Washington ' s Birthday takes place at a tea at which, annually, the Senior Class entertain the College. A short program followed the minuet: (i) Knights and Ladies; Mid Sylvan Glories, Sextette of Music Supervisors; (2) Violin Solo, Souvenir, Norman Heintzelman. Many girls dressed as Colonial maids then served the large company with tea, punch, and cakes. The most thrilling part of all, however, was a mid-week dance in Recreation Hall in the evening at which, it is needless to say, with Les Garman ' s music, everyone enjoyed himself greatly. 153 COMMITTEE 154 MUSICAL EVENTS ELEANOR STARKEY CONCERT— NOVEMBER 10 A voice like a flute and a violin combined rang through our mind when we were en- tertained by our Eleanor Starkey. We have a perfect right to that possessive pronoun because not only is she the daughter of Professor Starkey, but also she was born here in Old Main and, not so very long ago, was a student in our Alma Mater. Her exquisite talent and marvelous technique overwhelmed our proprietary interest in her and we listened, enthralled, to a truly great voice. MOORE ANNIVERSARY— OCTOBER 5 Old college and Moore remmiscenses were surely in vogue on our campus when many of the Old Grads returned for the Annual Anniversary Concert of the Moore Literary Society. The artistes were: Arcadie Birkenholz, violinist; Genia Zielinski, coloratura soprano; Devora Nadworney, contralto; Guiseppe de Benedetto, tenor; Theodore Webb, baritone. They gave a most delightful concert which was greeted enthusiastically by a large audi- ence. A dance followed, in Recreation Hall, with music by Les Garman ' s Orchestra, giving a finesse to the evening nothing else could. FACULTY MUSIC CONCERT—JANUARY 20 Once a year, the Faculty of our Music Department give a concert in which they appear in evening clothes, display their talents, and lose the cognomen of Faculty in lieu of Ar- tistes. This year ' s Concert was even more delightful than ever before. During the year we have enjoyed a great many other musical concerts: i. Harmonica Concert, January iq. 2. Mr. Wolle ' s Organ Recital, January 27. Mr. Wolle was supported by Catharine Knoll, contralto, of Philadelphia. 3. Philadelphia Quartet, February 3. Helen Buchanan Hitner, Soprano; Marie Stone Langston, Contralto; Bernard Palona, Tenor; Helffenstein Mason, Basso; William Silvano Thunder, Accompanist. 4. Philadelphia String Quartet, February 17. Arthur B. Lipkin, First Violin; Stamslow Dabrowski, Second Violin; Philip Neeter, Viola; Milton Bnnz, Violoncello. 5. Haverford College Combined Musical Clubs Concert, March 9. 155 CHRISTMAS PLAYS 156 PLAYS COLLEGE PLAYS THE CHRISTMAS PLAY AND PAGEANT, DECEMBER 20 The Christmas play, Why the Chimes Rang, was given in the auditorium of the Philips Memorial Building. The play was presented by the departments of Art, English, and Music, assisted by the York County Club, and was a memorial to Miss Cora E. Everett, for many years head of the department of oral English. It was hoped by those interested in the play that it might become an established tradition in the school and furnish a lasting memorial to one who as a member of the faculty played well her part for more than twenty-eight years and is remembered with gratitude and affection by hosts of alumni. The following persons took the principal parts: Theresa Wagman, Helen McCollam, Clarence Collins, Louise Muller, Benjamin Heathenngton, Wmfield Thompson, Louise Miller, Charlotte Bayer, Willard Campbell, and John Stott. Grace D. McCarthy THE FACULTY PLAY, NOVEMBER 17 One of the events to which the student body look forward with special anticipation of pleasure is the faculty play. This year the play was The First Year, by Frank Craven. The following persons composed the cast: Misses Dorothy Schmucker, Elsie O. Bull, Mar- garet Ruth Smith, and Mary Connell, Messrs. C. E. Hausknecht, Charles Swope, Clarence McKelvie, L. Forrest Free, J. Arthur Lewis. The auditorium of the Philips Memorial Building in which the play was given, furnished an opportunity for fine effect that was lived up to by the cast and enhanced by the skillful coaching of Mr. Arthur Lewis. In all respects it was a most satisfactory performance, clever play, good acting, appreciative audience. The faculty play of 1927-28 goes down in school history a pronounced success. Grace D. McCarthy During the year various clubs have given plays: Library Club Plays, January 28; Rural, combined with Delaware County Club Plays, March 10; Day Students ' Club, The Man Next Door, March 24; Y. W. C. A. and Y. M. C. A., The Color Line, March 22. OUTSIDE PLAYS THE POOR NUT, FEBRUARY 23 Editors talk, the faculty talks, we talk about college atmosphere but we had it on our campus the evening The Poor Nut was given in our Chapel by the Better Plays Ex- tension Company, Inc. Members of our student body assisted in scenes where quantity was needed. It was a remarkably staged, cleverly portrayed comedy. THE VISION, MARCH 14, 15 The Vision, the Passion Play given by the students of Villanova College, was a most beautiful event. It is a story of ancient Palestine having a deeply religious tone. The acting was superb and the whole effect of the play most inspiring. HEALTH EDUCATION PAGEANT, JANUARY 18 What a wonderful experience — to have the whole process and evolution of Education pass before one ' s eyes in less than two hours ' time. This pageant, The Heritage, showed also the contributions of Art and Music from every known source. The whole program was a truly educational as well as delightful one. 157 MISS CHERRYBLOSSOM, MARCH 28 Such a charming Japanese garden! What perfect cherry blossoms! Sweet voices, have they not? — all exclamations heard concerning this operetta given by the Music De- partment under the direction of Miss Tyson, Mr. Zimmer, and Miss Low. The principal characters were: Cherryblossoin Maxine Sweeley ]ac Smith Amnos Evans Ko emo Joseph Hanselman Jessica Vanderpool .... Verna Knoll Harry ] ones Charles Weidner Togo Clarence Collins Horace Worthington . . . Benjamin Hetherington Jarnes Young Walter Williams Samwho Samuel Morrison There was a chorus of Geisha girls and many American men and women, making up a cast which gave a most attractive performance. SENIOR CLASS PLAY, MAY 24 The Greek classic, Ulysses, describing the journey, trials, and ultimate return home of that hero was the play chosen to be given by the Senior Class. A very lovely performance was given by the well-selected cast including: Athene Elsie Brinker Penelope Mary Ward Calypso Jean Gilbert Phenius Frances Fearon Eurycleia Laura Wagner Ulysses Benjamin Hetherington Teleinachus Richard Head Eumalus Walter Liggett Antinous William Benner Ctesippus George Henderson Eurymochius Ronald Yocum Hermes Michael Bales 158 SOCIAL EVENTS FORMALS NEW YEAR DANCE Philips Memorial, January 14, 1928 Committee Charles Weidner, Chairman Gywnne Webster Mary Oyler Ida Phillips Walter Trott, Jr. Earl Laub Benjamin Hetherington Dorothy Stevenson Music by Les Garman and his Orchestra SENIOR PROM Philips Memorial, February 18, 1928 Committee Walter Trott, Jr., Chairman Edward Hopkins John Stott Helen Rosenberger Grace Hunter Lillian Keevil Jessie Ellinger Music by Ted Brownagle ' s Orchestra of Harnsburg, Pa. The results in the Grand March were ludicrous in some cases, delightful in others, and gratifying in all. Of course, there would be cider and cookies to reconcile those who didn ' t win prizes and refresh all who danced to Les Garman ' s peppy music. Then, too, there were clever dances and games, making it, in truth, an offering to the Season of Joy and Playfulness! CHRISTMAS DANCE, DECEMBER 19 Recreation Hall, with a huge Christmas Tree in the center, gorgeously decorated with lights and ornaments, exemplified Christmas. This, coupled with music and dancing, made up our Annual Christmas Dance. Contrary to the doctrines of many wordly wise cynics, we still believe in Santa Claus 160 because he came in the midst of the festivities and distributed most useful and appropriate gifts to various celebrated people of our College, with a charming speech for each. He then, very mysteriously, disappeared and the dance proceeded to its ultimate and sad consummation — the end. SENIOR SLEIGH RIDE, JANUARY 30 The quiet hamlet ( ! ! !???) of West Chester was awakened from its lethargy (usually beginning at 8 p.m.) by musical strains of most any selection from, Oh, Promise Me to Jingle Bells. The snow was just right, rendering conditions perfect for the Senior Sleigh Ride. The seventeen sleighs drove the crowd almost to Lenape then back to the Green Tree Inn. Here coffee, choco- late, and sandwiches were consumed in amazing quantities. The radio was slightly inadequate for dancing so each couple furnished their own music and danced accordingly. The effect was kaleidoscopic, to say the least. It was a perfect evening, however, and to quote a rather ungrammatical reveler, We had the ' knockoutest ' time ever! 161 4 BONFIRE 162 w m r i a wSt mf 2l 1 mMvvIhH 3 ' w °- — fe-4fc - 5 k i 7 ■; ,,«ri s .j. % t« -TtT : 1 rl Anglev, Hanky. Football season had already begun and everyone was anxious to show his wares. A few days later, fifty men clad in track uniforms reported on Wayne Field for the initial practice of the season. The squad was divided into three teams, after two weeks of intensive train ' ing in all forms of tactics. The schedule was arranged in a logical and scientific way. The hard games were well distributed so as to have all players in condition when these games were to be played. The school was beginning its first year as a Teachers College and it was natural to expect the athletics to be of a collegiate standard. Thus our games were arranged with teachers ' colleges and college Freshmen teams. The conduct and sportsmanship displayed by the men on the practice field and off was very gratifying. There was no shirking; everyone was of the same mind, working for the good of the team. October i found the team journeying to Hill School for the first game of the year. Instead of the old custom of having the Varsity begin the game, the second-string men were sent in. It was not known that this combination was later to become the famous Shock Troop of West Chester. The game was hard fought, but West Chester having the better edge of the fray, emerged victors. The score 12-6 showed evi ' dence that a powerful fighting machine was being built, and everyone looked forward with anticipation to a successful season. October 8. Franklin and Marshall Frosh at West Chester. The first home game made quite a hit. Although outplayed, the F. and M. boys fought very gamely. The visitors were sent home with the short end of a 41-0 score. It was a pleasing performance for the opening game at our College. October 15. Our new rival, Bloomsburg, proved to be the next victim. The Shock Troop, ' ' after a few minutes of play, pushed the pigskin across the line. Bloomsburg was defeated from the start; it was evident that the upstate eleven was no match for our boys. The score 40-0 only in part displayed the ability of the Yellow Jackets. October 22. Franklin and Marshall Academy traveled to West Chester only to be sent home in defeat. The game was utilized to build a strong offense to be used the following Saturday against our ancient rivals. Score 26-0. 165 October 29. Shippensburg, the biggest game of the year. The team traveled to Cumberland Valley to play its old and bitter rival. It was Home-coming Day at Shippensburg, and all looked forward to a victory. The game was on and the outset showed that a hard struggle was to ensue. Strategy was employed by both sides but did not prove effective. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The second half opened with a furious attack on Shippensburg and thrice did our team cross their line before they realized that we were the superior team. Shippensburg was now defeated and once more did West Chester assert its supremacy. It was a fitting close to the Athletic relations that existed between the two schools. Much of the success of the game was due to the loyal sup- port of the student body and our famous Lydia Pinkham band. November 5. Home again. Trenton proved to be a strong foe. For a long time it seemed as if it were anyone ' s game, but finally W. C. emerged at the top of a 7-0 score. November 12. Millersville — the last game at home. The score 430 indicated that we were easy winners. Everything was pointing to the coming game with great interest. November 19. The nemesis. The team traveled to Stroudsburg for the most decisive game of the year. Victory meant the State Champion- ship. Immediately after the start of the game the Shock Troops scored, then the Varsity was sent in. The first half ended in a 6-7 score. The second half was an exhibition of the most listless type of football ever played by our team. We had no spirit and defeat was inevitable. The game ended with Stroudsburg on the far end of a 13-6 score. Strouds- burg won the championship. To the victors belong the spoils. They fought the better fight and well deserved victory. Much credit must be given Coach MacGovern for his untiring ef- forts. The scrubs deserve mention for their work in building the fight- ing machine of Yellow Jackets. The team owes the greater part of its success to the excellent leadership of Captain Jack Stott. We com- mend faculty, student body, and band for their excellent support. With abundant material remaining and probably more to enter, we hope West Chester continues to hold its fame on the gridiron. 166 West Chester West Chester West Chester West Chester West Chester West Chester West Chester RECORD West Grove . . Perkiomen . . . Beacom . . . . East Stroudsburg Beacom .... Hill School Westtown . . . FOR the first time at this school, Soccer is recognized as a minor sport in the field of athletics. Previous to this year, West Chester was represented by a soccer team, although there was no regular coach or a definite schedule. With the coming of Earle C. Waters, an experienced athletic coach, soccer became established as a permanent branch of athletics of the College. From the standpoint of the number of games won and lost, the team emerged with a mediocre record. However, if we are to consider some of the conditions under which the team played, the men must be commended for the fine spirit of play and sportsmanship. The outstanding players of the soccer season have been Captain Smedley, Jimmy Crawford, and Danny Rambo, although every member of the team deserves mention. Some day we hope this newly organized sport will have as many followers as football and basketball. 167 CONFERENCE CHAMPS Heintielman, Manager k m Hopkins BASKETBALL MacGovern, Coodi 169 i BASKETBALL THE HONOR of being the first State Teachers ' College basket- ball champions in Pennsylvania comes to West Chester. The team looked forward to earning this title at the very beginning of the season and did its utmost to get it. With practically every man back from the preceding year, and a wealth of new material, Coach MacGovern developed a fine aggrega- tion of basketball men. As in football, the schedule for the season was arranged with college teams. After several weeks of drill in the elements of the game, the team was prepared to face the most difficult schedule ever at- tempted by any Purple and Gold team. On January 14, the team opened its season by defeating the Schuylkill Javees. The score 37-24 indicated that a team of superior ability was in the process of being built. The following week, Keystone S. T. C. was given the short end of a 34-27 score. Then came the big upset. The team journeyed to the Palestra and gave the Penn. Javees their first defeat of the season. Penn., how- ever, atoned for its defeat several weeks later. F. and M. Frosh were next to bow to the Yellow Jackets. On February 25 the team registered its first victory against the ever-powerful Stroudsburg team. It was the first setback Stroudsburg ever received from West Chester in this sport. With Stroudsburg taken into camp, the state title was now within our grasp. The following Friday the team traveled to Mansfield and Lock Haven and gave the upstate boys a fine demonstration of basketball. The final game of the season was a classic, with Kutztown and the Yellow Jackets battling on even terms. The visitors had greatly im- proved since our last meeting and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that the Purple and Gold made victory sure. We were now State Champs ' in the true sense of the word. The team was built around the tall and rangy center, Smiling Cal Heller, Red Pearl and Ned Hopkins, two dead-shot forwards, Captain Dalton and Jack Stott, the guards. Heller and Pearl were the outstanding stars of the season. Others who saw service in many games were Donald, Moyer, Singer, Malloy, Minch, Troxell, and Dimm. With but a few men lost by graduation, the prospects for another championship seem excellent. 170 VARSITY BASKETBALL Singer, D;mm. Moyer. Troxell, Hemt:elman iMgr.i. Stott. About thirty men answered the call for track candidates in the latter part of February, and since then each has trained diligently. The team seems to be very well balanced, having good representation on both the field and cinder- path. The Varsity relay team has not been selected to date but several men loom up as the possible sprinters, namely: Captain Trott, Smedley, Kunkle, Schoff, Moyer, Seltzer, and Porter. The relay team will be entered in the Penn Relays for its initial event of the season. If we win this, West Chester will be recognized as having the best Teachers ' College relay team in the state. The distance runners, Dutchman, Schoff, Hunsberger, Jackson, and Zekas are gradually getting in trim for their part. In the field events, we will be represented by several competent men. Stott, George, and Bennett, a trio of weight men, are among our consistent point-winners. Hontz, the new high-jump man, seems to fill that place well. In the pole-vault, Mickey Bales is out again to break records. Mickey has gained an envious re- putation by establishing several marks in the past season. The team has been entered in several meets besides the Penn Relays. On May 19, the first Intercollegiate Track Meet of the Teachers ' College will be held on our own Wayne Field. We hope that on this day West Chester again will assert her supremacy in Athletics. Without any meets to date, we cannot predict success for the team, but with such a group of spikers, victory at any meet seems inevitable. 174 LETTER MEN Clark Allison Anthony A. Angley Leo F.
