The beginning of the next ONE HUNDRED YEARS amet | |i: m:itso SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL West Chester, Pennsylvania Dedication 4 WALTER L. PHILIPS Superintendent 1925-1938 - - to our educators of the last iOl yearn B. REED HENDERSON Principal 1924-1952 Just as each dawn is the start of a new day, full of new problems to be met and dreams to be realized, so each venture is a new beginning, as Thomas Stearns Eliot once said. Each step we take can be significant in the fulfillment or failure of a dream. Each decision we make can be the first step towards the attainment of an important goal in our lives. But only through the efforts of our minds and our hands can we reach that goal. Thus, we realize that a new venture is beginning. To make any under- taking worthwhile, we must strive for a good ending also. It is with these thoughts that we leave our school to face the challenges of the world. As we go, we would remember those who have set us an example in the century of education just completed. These people devoted their lives to building a good school system upon which we can build our future. 5 FOREWORD We have remembered the educational leaders of the past century. We have begun the work of a new century of education. We now view the year just ended: a faculty supplying the reservoirs of knowledge from which we learn and grow, the seniors who go forth to the many fields of the future, the athletic teams that have brought new ustre to our school, the activities that have enhanced our special in- terests and the underclassmen who will continue the task of preparation for a better future. CONTENTS SENIORS 24 7 ACTIVITIES •86 FACULTY UNDERCLASS ...... 110 Faculty SUPERINTENDENT HAROLD H. WINGERD, A.B., M.S. in Ed.; The Hill School, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania. Your future, like all futures, is uncer- tain and unknown. Your teachers have not been able to insulate you from the uncer- tainties of the world in which you live nor from the impact of the problems which will confront you. They have, however, tried to equip you with the basic skills and knowl- edge to meet these problems, to encour- age you to take part in civic responsibilities, and to strengthen those inner resources of character which are the mainstay of the American people. It is my hope that you will continue to grow in knowledge, in civic responsibilities and in moral integrity. In this way, you can adequately repay your parents, your teach- ers, your community for the efforts and the sacrifices which they have made for you. Harold H. Wingerd Superintendent DAVID C. ERAY, A.B., M.Ed.; Albright College, University of Pittsburgh, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. DESMOND J. NUNAN, A.B., A.M., Columbia College, Columbia University, Director of Curriculum. EDWARD A. HAGEL, B.S., M.S. in Ed., West Chester State College, Temple University, Assistant Superintendent (Business Affairs). PRINCIPAL ROBERT B. McCARTER, B.S., M.Ed., West Chester State College, Pennsylvania State University, Temple University Administrative Assistant WALTER K. PETERS, B.S., Indiana State College West Chester can be very proud of its high school and the quality of service it has given to the community for the past one hundred years. This issue of the Garnet and White honors all who have contributed to this excellent record. The life of our school cannot be put into a book. It is an active group of students and teachers who are dedicated to upholding our many fine customs and traditions. I hope that this yearbook will serve as a life- time reminder of your experiences at Henderson High School. May your happy senior days be a mere foretaste of your wonderful years ahead. For the first time in the history of West Chester High, the Warrior football team win the highly-coveted Ches-Mont cham- pionship. Culminating two years of intense training the Warriors, under the tutelage of Coach Robert McCoy and staff, completed a 9-1-1 record, the best in more than a decade. Coach McCoy attributed the championship to desire, hard and unselfish work and a willingness to learn. Coach McCoy also said, I think that teamwork was most evident and that everyone was pulling for everyone else. Dave Parsons, Bobby Owens, Mike Bannon and Jay March supplied most of the offensive drive while Captain Ed Gondolf, together with Charlie Funk, Dave Keller, Bill Worthington and Jeff Smith furnished most of the head clash- ing, blocking and tackling. This season marks the sixth consecutive year that Henderson soccer team won the Southern Chester County League championship. Although history was repeated, this year's players and their spirit gave this year’s team a personality all its own. Led by co- captains small, but powerful, Scott Conrad and all- time, high scoring Joe Milanese the booters showed versatility and strength in every area of play. Eric Pederson, Doug Cording and Mike Miller helped to maintain a tight defense while Joe Milanese, Scott Conrad, Charlie Spadoni and Bill Young led the scor- ing effort. Completing the team's defensive squad were John Rohde and Mike Romano, both rookie goalies. Nate Matthews exhibits fine ball control as he manipulates around three opponents. With major vic- tories over Great Valley and Spring-Ford, the team members displayed exceptional abilities in skills and teamwork. Coaches Joan Brinton and Barbara Leighton were pleased with the effort put forth by the girls. GIRLS' HOCKEY BASKETBALL Coach Jack McClellan's Warriors, who last season performed what sportswriters termed the impossible by beating a fast-moving Coatesville team three times in succession and winning the Ches-Mont championship, did the same thing this past February by defeating Coatesville, 65-59, at the Palestra and bringing the Ches- Mont crown home for the second consecutive year. The Warriors went to the District I finals in March, where they bowed to a strong Chester aggregation, 59-55. Tri- captains Andy Toth, who has practically rewritten the Ches-Mont record books and is one of the nation's top scorers; Bob Owens, team ball handler and play maker; Bert Henderson, a well-rounded player and team man, together with rebounding Mike Miller, Harry Nash and Tom Boyer compose the nucleus of this year's team.
