Weit Gh itesi cJlicjit School p ucionti 6 PjM-' V' v . A, Vo y ,tf v ' J' i« y A' ■ V.c met klKlte FOREWORD Flash! The shutter snaps, and the picture is taken. Simple? No, quite the contrary. The process of taking a picture is a complicated, detailed procedure. The process of obtaining a thorough high school education is equally complex. In the initial step the film enters the camera just as the students enter the school: relatively new and unexposed to light. There is, indeed, much to be learned. Before an image can be formed on the film, the light must pass through the lens, which concentrates the incoming rays and brings them into focus. Acting as the lens for the high school, the faculty concentrates the incoming light in the form of knowledge and brings it into focus in the form of learning. The light entering the camera is then flashed speedily and accurately onto the surface of the film. The same precision can be seen in any of the sports played at West Chester High School. As the light strikes the film, chemical activity surges; the students at West Chester show a similar vitality through their participation in many activities. After a complete roll of film has been exposed, a new one replaces it. This new film in the camera is represented by the underclassmen, who are poised and eagerly awaiting the exciting times ahead. The seniors, however, have already completed their years of high school life, and the knowledge and experiences have, for the most part, made a permanent impression upon them. Today, like negatives, they are taken from the camera and sent into the world to develop into pictures of the capable leadership so necessary in tomorrow’s volatile world. XX THE FACULTY act as the lens, focusing all the incom- ing light and knowledge and bring- ing them into clarity upon the film. STANDING: Mr. David Fray. Although the finished picture of the individual student will not be seen by the faculty, this does not diminish the im- portance of his part in its development. The faculty and administration act to guide the students and to help each one concentrate on - developing himself to full capacity. In addition to encouraging this nec- essary guidance, the educational program at West Chester High is specifically de- signed to set pupils on the road to inde- pendent thinking, a process prerequisite to a successful future. A tfand tf-aAeivell It is with respect and admiration that West Chester High pays tribute to two of its finest teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Ferris, who will retire this June. Mr. Ferris has taught at West Chester for fifteen years and is Director of the Trade and Technical Department, Practical Nursing, and Industrial Arts. He is a dedicated teacher and says he enjoys teaching because he likes young people. His wife, who is head of the Home Economics Department in the West Chester Secondary Schools, has taught at West Chester for eighteen years. Speaking for both of them, Mrs. Ferris says that they have enjoyed their work and have always been interested in improving their respective departments. Mr. and Mrs. Ferris plan to make Florida their permanent home. 19 FRONT ROW: Pete Oeubler, Ralph Haines, Bill Vosburgh, Jim McElya. In addition to these half-time performances at the football games, the band displayed its versatility in pep rallies and local parades. After football season, some members of the musical group concentrated their talents on con- cert style music, while others comprised a dance band. The culminating activity of the year was the annual Spring Concert. Mr. John Sepella, band director, this year accepted a special invitation for the band to play at the New York World's Fair. 3 FRONT ROW: Henri Bowser, Marianne Ruch, Alice Gose, Marianne McComsey, Pam Gose. Under the leadership of Mr. Michael Kostick, the orchestra participated in the Spring Concert. This year an innovation, the woodwind quintet, projected its attention on music com- posed by one of its members, John Suplee. 10 Displaying the symbols of country, state, and school, the Color Guard proudly preceded the march- ing band. After the band and Color Guard came to a halt, the majorettes entered the picture with their flashy routines. Indianhead In the eight issues of this year's Indian- head, Carol Hemphill, editor, and her staff, advised by Mr. Patrick McDaid, brought high- lights of school events into focus. The news- paper also served as a medium through which students could express their own ideas. The staff used constructive criticism of various school organizations to encourage self-evalu- ation, a progressive idea leading to self- improvement. A smaller staff increased the responsi- bilities of each member. By writing in various fields, participating in proofreading, make- up, and critique, each staff member was given a more extensive picture of newspaper pro- duction. Bringing a varied picture of Spanish life into the classroom atmosphere was the intent of the Spanish Club, assisted by Miss Ethel Reagan. The focal points of the organization this year were the Christmas party and the Spanish dinner. The French Club, advised by Mrs. Carolyn Bas- sett, attempted to develop an understanding of the people of the French-speaking world. Meeting twice monthly, the group frequently viewed slides and films and occasionally heard guest speakers. French Club 53 Idea-men Rick Glogau, Gordon Woodrow, and Paul Snyder ponder over possible Council projects. Functioning under a revised Constitution, this year's Student Council, aided by Miss Patricia Dixon, exposed a series of novel ideas promising to become tradition at West Chester. Examples of such accom- plishments were the activity cards and the faculty baby-picture contest. The Thanksgiving dance, the Christmas dance, and Field Day—all council-sponsored projects - were sights that only a shutter could pre- serve. BROWN ROBERT S. CLAY, JR. ROSS FRENCH MARK LaMARCH RICHARD L. MARCH MEREDITH M. MORROW LAWRENCE S. THOMAS, JR. RICHARD YERKES Acknowledgments: The film has been exposed, cut, spliced, and edited, and is now on its way to development; indeed, the scenes of the high school cinerama have come to an end. These scenes could not have been photographed without the assistance of many people. The Garnet and White staff wishes to thank Faith Lindley for her cover lettering and Tom Giunta for his cover design. Providing permanent remembrances of high school life were the Daily Local News and Mr. Millard Freeman, who has completed the last of many devoted years to aiding the Garnet and White. We extend our gratitude to Mrs. June Weissman, business adviser, and also to Mr. Edward Ursprung of the William T. Cooke Publishing Com- pany, who handled our technical problems. Only through the combined resources of all those involved is the photograph now complete. 123 Elliot Perlman, Editor 124 “Today, like negatives, they are taken from the camera and sent into the world to develop into pictures of the capable leadership so necessary in tomorrow's volatile world.” Wr r • 4. -i - v— ■• r - - A •f kU ►A lk' XTr«pk 1 . i •♦ • ■ .
