✓ ft; T r, June 4, 1964: a day long awaited by all of us. Yet now that it is here, it seems to have arrived all too soon. In just three short years the future has become the present and we are now leaving behind the friendships, the long hours of study, and the excitement which brought both happiness and heartache in our senior year. Dur- ing that time the Garnet and White Staff worked long and laboriously to preserve the memories that make us proud of our school; and there can be no better way to preserve these remembrances than through the words of our own Alma Mater, which we have chosen for this year’s theme. As you relive the moments of your high school year, by looking through the pages of the 1964 Garnet and White, we hope that the words of this song will have a deeper and more lasting meaning. In 1926 Samuel Barber answered the call to the colors by composing the music and writing the words to our Alma Mater. However, the lasting tribute which he expressed in such moving chords was only one of the many pieces composed by the talented Pulitzer Prize winner. Two of the com- positions on his long list of renowned works are “Prix de Rome” and “Adagio for String Orchestra.” LIFE AND TRUTH Newcomers and veterans For every teacher September beck- ons the recurring challenge of imparting basic understanding in a way that will interest every student. Because each stu- dent is an individual who has his own way of responding to instruction, teach- ers perennially face a gigantic task. Nevertheless, the faculty willingly be- gins anew the quest for more effective methods of teaching not only academics, but also lessons of life. Through determination and desire, the instructors have successfully con- tinued this search, thus making this year another interesting and reward- ing one. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Standing: Mrs. E. FOOTBALL Jim Hansen has a clear field and a possible touchdown ahead if he can snare John Thompson’s pass. The Downingtown back is about to come to an abrupt halt as Mike Haines hits from the front with Charlie Funk coming up to help. Touchdown! The Warriors score as Jim Hansen clutches the ball and falls into the end zone. John Thompson, Warrior quarterback, can’t find a re- ceiver open but picks up substantial yardage around end. Coach Bruno stresses teamwork The 1963-64 Warriors supplied many thrills and showed much spirit throughout the season. Injuries to key players handicapped the team at times but failed to snuff the determin- ation of the team or dampen the spirit of the student body. In spite of the many disappoint- ments, individuals displayed an applicable amount of talent. Many underclassmen who saw considerable action this year will return and hopefully lead the Warriors to the success that eluded them this season. Mr. J. Smida. Line Coach; Mr. A. Bruno. The opposing goalie crouches in readiness, attempting to stop a Warrior advance. Under Miss Fry and Miss McKenna the Warrior- ettes completed a difficult schedule with 4 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie with only three letter-winners returning. Of special note were Toni Hartshorne and goalie Marion Washington, both named to the All Chest-Mont Team. The Junior Varsity, under Miss McKenna, fought to a 5 won, 4 lost season and, with those girls coupled with the six returning varsity letter-winners. West Chester High may anticipate another successful season next year. VARSITY Row 1: C. Malavolta, A. Valentino. S. Ryan. M. Washington. C. Crescentini. B. Woodrow. P. Criddle. Back Row: Coach J. SOCCER Barry Hughes moves in for a shot. “This was the greatest team I ever coached.” These words were Mr. John Serff’s lasting tribute to the most spectacular soccer team that has ever played for West Chester High. On their way to compiling a record of 14 wins, no losses, and 2 ties, the Warriors won the District 1 Championship by thumping North Penn and then, a short week later, trouncing Upper Darby by identical 3-0 scores. The squad completed a sensational season by annexing the Inter- district Title, 1-0, in a hard-fought game with Northeastern. VARSITY Rotv I: G. Odyak. C. Dannenberg. R. Spadoni (Co-Capt.), M. Bill was a key figure in the squad’s winning season. This year Mr. James Facciolli took com- mand of the cross country squad. Sparked by Senior Bill Chamberlin and Sophomore Way- land Whittaker, the Warrior Harriers hustled to great success, winning 6 of their 8 meets. Many of their games were lost in the final minutes of play as the opposition took advantage of West Chester’s lack of depth. However, the Junior Varsity, under Miss Fry. posted a winning season, making next year’s Varsity prospects seem bright. VARSITY Row 1: J. Raymond. B. Ray. S. McKenna. S. Avyer. D. Diffenderfer, P. The Student Organization was composed of Student Council, the executive body and General As- sembly, the representative body. Under the guidance of Miss Patricia Dixon, Student Organization spon- sored dances and a skating party, debated on dress codes and parking regulations, conducted the United Fund drive, and kept the trophies gleaming. Student Organization also provided practical experience in self- government for every student. All interested students were invited to attend meetings or to make sugges- tions to their representatives. OFFICERS Sherry Turpin. Jane Heald. John Strauss. John Fry. Greg Marshall. Laura Stancato. FUTURE TEACHERS Members of Future Teachers of America gained “knowledge to serve” from meetings in which teachers from elementary and high schools discussed problems and techniques of teaching. The aspiring teachers applied this knowl- edge in their tutoring service, which gave them practice in their chosen profession and simultaneously helped students improve their understanding of difficult subjects. Throughout the year, the girls gained experience in entertaining and parliamentary procedure. At Christmas, they made favors for the patients’ trays at two boarding homes. Speakers at club meetings ranged from Chester County Hospital representatives, who ex- plained different training programs, to Mr. Wells and Mrs. Hickey who spoke respectively on the importance of chemistry and languages for nurses. A high point of the program was Future Nurses Day on May 15. which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday. FUTURE NURSES Row 1: L. Mejia, Y. Pence, S. Glassberg. P. Von Rembow. J. Martin. L. McKell, J. The group viewed slides and movies, heard speakers, and attended a play, “The Infernal Machine” by Jean Cocteau, which was presented at West Chester State College. To give practice in using the language, business meetings of the club were conducted entirely in French. 53 GERMAN CLUB German Club was established, with the encouragement of Mr. Eberhard Wolckenhaar. as a discussion group to enrich the regular German course.
