1963 GARNET am. WHITE west Chester joint high school west Chester, Pennsylvania CONTENTS Krene I — Spurts..................14 Mceiir II — 4f iriV V .v............34 fciic III — i'usi...................00 FOREWORD For the Clans of 1963 the drama of life has been divided into three parts, each having its share of comic and tragic elements which help us to become more fully developed characters. We are the protagonists who have approached the stage with an air of confidence and indecision. The conflicts of our fleeting high school days bring to an end the Second Act of our play, for our carefree childhood spent in grammar school was the setting for Act One. With our college educations and careers ahead of us. Act Three, has yet to commence. Soon Act Two will he brought to a climax, leaving us with only the memories of our years spent at West Chester High School. For this reason the 1963 Garnet and White Staff has observed from backstage the many actors and actresses performing their parts with care and precision before the final curtain. Producers ADMINISTRATION Mr. David C. Fray, Administrative Assistant to Superintendent; Mr. Harold H. Wingerd, Superintendent of Schools. DR. ELLWOOD SPELLMAN President of West Chester and Joint Junior-Senior High School Boards. We, the cast of W.C.H.S., present our producers: the administrators. Without their interest and support, our performance would be impossible. The task of thi s important group is to supervise the three years of rehearsals for our performance on the stage. They have selected and constructed our backdrops and scenery and controlled special effects. They have given us the props and publicity we need and allowed us to experi- ment with different types of acting. Hoping that their satisfaction is as great as our grat- itude, we shall strive to justify their efforts through our performance. 6 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Jacob Azain, Assistant Principal; Mr. Robert Mc- Carter, Principal; Mr. Walter Peters, Administrative Assist- ant. These men and women carefully scan our script and show us which lines of our play should be emphasized. Even the harsh lighting of the stage will reveal no glaring flaws in our character if we co-operate with our faculty and make constructive use of the make-up and props which they provide. 1 heir prompting helps mold our character for the parts we take. Following three years of rehearsals, we are ready to tread the boards. Directors World of Science from the Rosure Chest of Boo ENGLISH Sitting: Mis.- Aldine Gearhart, Miss Edythe M. Trapnell. The toe bone is connected to the foot bone . . .” ‘This is good”-ness on Mr. Zeiders face! Mr. Waxbom is doing one of those experi incuts again piano Clear that table, boy!” 1II give you one minute to wipe that smirk off your face.” “Boy, I wish something would work around here.” 12 IN TRIBUTE Mr. Russell W. Urich With the retirement of a true veteran of the teaching profession, Mr. Russell Urich, West Chester High School hears a great loss. His absence among the members of our faculty will leave a vacancy difficult to fill. Throughout his thirty-six years of teaching in the fields of English, science, and mathe- matics, he has possessed a rare talent of kindling in his students a desire and an eagerness for learning. An A.B. graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, Mr. Urich has served our school well as head of the Mathematics Depart- ment and as a dedicated teacher. The stage of West Chester High will seem empty without his presence, but his memory will remain in all our hearts. IN MEMORIAM Mr. Lowell H. Fisher On September 12, 1962, West Chester High School lost one of its most dedicated faculty members, Mr. Lowell H. Fisher. Educated at Downingtown High School and the Wharton School of the University of Penn- sylvania, Mr. Fisher began teaching at West Chester in 1927. He had served as head of the Business Education Department since 1931. Mr. Fisher was also supervisor of the school’s work- experience program and directed the placement service for the business education students. For many years this industrious man had served as an advisor to the senior class and also aided the administration with commencement exercises. It is with great pride that we honor this man who had such enthusiasm for his work. 13 JV CHEERLEADERS Kneeling: S. Weir, Captain; S. Spellman. Back Bow: C. Ashton, J. Health L. Green, I). Dooley, C. Crcscentini, P. Jones, L. Stancato, P. Schott. Many a great play would fail on tin opening night if it were not for the faithfulness of its prompters. And so our cheerleaders, under the direction of Captain Sue Johnson and Co-Captains Judy McKenna and Pat Huss, prompt the students to cheer our various teams to victory. Faithful in this task, they also participate in pep rallies and assemblies throughout the year. Cummins.) Coaches: Mr. John Johnson, Mr. A1 Bruno, Mr. Joe Smida. Coach Bruno’s football team concluded the ’62 season with a record of three wins, six losses, and one tie but displayed some of the best football seen at W.C.H.S. in recent years. Headed by Co-Captains Mike Leighton and Boh Thomas, the Warriors defeated Ambler, arch rival Coatesville, Owen J. Roberts, and on Thanksgiving Day played a tremendous game before bowing to Conestoga 12-6. Football 17 Coatesville’s Paul Hudson is hauled down by a barrage of Warrior tacklcrs. Warrior opponent does a hasty ahout faec as Eric Sadler follows in hot pursuit. 18 Front Rote: A. Mosley, P. Bruno, D. Kirkner, G. Hutchinson, J. Gibson, C. Tomlinson, R. Haines, J. McElya. Second Row: P. Etough, F. Albertson, E. Coshy, B, Little, F. Donahoe, P. Deubler, J. Moore, M. Gerasim, J. Green, (Manager). Rack Row: R. Thomas, J. Sickler, B. Mitten. Anxious Warrior opponent finds himself being quickly rushed by Eric Sadler, 84, and Nelson Chambers, 40. Coatcsville’s Paul Lambert is suddenly tied up by Warrior Jim Hansen. West Chester’s Carrell Loper barely eludes outstretched arms of Coates villc player. Warrior’s Wayne Boggs, while falling, tightly clutches pigskin. 19 20 Front Row: M. Trcston, S. Mory, N. Curtis, S. Mar- inofsky, K. Facciolli, T. Myers, C. Crouse, M. Rush. Second Row: Coach J. Fry, A. Valentino, B. Woodrow, C. Henry, S. Ryan, C. Crescentini. Cindy Henry, 30, seeks possession of the hall. Warriorette, Sue Marinofsky, stands ready to defend West Chester goal. Beth Woodrow, left, watches Anna Valentino, right and opponent struggle for hall. Two new coaches and a revitalized spirit carried the 1962 hockey team to a season of triumph unequaled in recent years. Under the unerring hands of Miss Fry and Miss McKenna, the Warriorettes, led by Co-Captains Kathy Facciolli and Nancy Curtis, compiled a record of seven wins, two ties, and no defeats. Their team was a tribute to our school. Hockey Anna Valentino awaits a pass from a hurried teammate. Carol Crouse steals the hall from two Westtown players. Stephanie Mory bullies for hall with much deter- mination. Front Row: S. Smith, G. Valentino, R. Newton, J. Veser, C. Baldwin, C. Malavolta, S. McKenna, V. Conn, K. Hastings. Back Row: C. Veldhuis, S. Nyc, J. Esher, V. DiBonaventura, P. Schott, M. Penny, E. Giangiulio, Coach J. McKenna. Soccer Although winning the Southern Chester County League witli a fine record of thirteen wins and one tie, the Warrior Booters lost to Harriton in the District One Play-offs. Coach Serff thought that the team had an excellent season. Seven seniors, including Co- Captains Sam Dorsey and Joint Mila- nese, formed the nucleus of this year’s team. Every team has its star, and this team’s star was “teamwork”. West Chester’s Sam Dorsey struggles against Kennctt onrushers. After a disappointing season, Cross-Country Coach Ed Malikowski said, “All twenty-eight hoys worked hard, maintained good team spirit, and completed the entire season without quit- ting.” Co-Captained by Art Adams and Cliff Smith, the team concluded the year with a record of two wins and six losses. They placed seventh in the Ches-Mont Championships. In Section One of the District One Championships, Art Adams ran thirtieth in a field of one-hun- dred and fifty harriers, leading the boys to tenth place out of twenty-one teams. West Chester harriers Jim Milliken and Clifford Smith, respectively, increase the pace for trailing opponent. Front Row: H. Dewees, D. Kirkner, J. Milliken, C. Smith, A. Adams, E. Weil, R. Erb, M. With tri-captains Bob Munck, Dick Jacobs, and Jan Twardowski leading an experienced Warrior band, Coach Jack Stahl’s grapplers appear destined to have a fine year on the mats. Against three losses, the Warriors have posted victories over Unionville, Phoenixville, and perennially powerful Ridley Township. Jan Twardowski and Boh Munck loosen up before the match. Wrestling Coach Jack McClellan’s Warriors, who ended up in third place in the first half of Ches-Mont action, have a good chance of capturing second place for the season. This year, McClellan is using two teams: a press team, consisting of Wayne Boggs, Jim Bond, Larry Smith, Bob Erb, Sam Dorsey, and Carrell Loper and a big team, consisting of Cliff Smith, Percy Dorsey, Dave Berkes, Norm Gommoll, Frank Bruno, and Ted Veit. Warrior’s Larry Smith drives past two Shanahan defenders towards the basket during the Christ- mas Tournament. High stepping Jim Bond and teammate Cliff Smith grab for the ball. 26 Basketball VARSITY Front Row: R. Erb, N. Gommoll, L. Smith, P. Dorsey, D. Berkos, F. Bruno. Rack Row: D. Kratz, J. Bond, T. SPORTS SHOTS 33 BAND As the curtain rises on the autumn reds and yellows, it reveals Mr. John Sepella and his marching band performing proudly in snappy garnet and white uniforms. Precision routines and the strains of ‘ On Warriors” add to the spirit of the spectators. In May, the concert band, under the direc- tion of Mr. Joseph Hanselman participates in the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Parade in Atlantic City, the Memorial Day Parade, and the annual Spring Concert. “On Warriors” echoes from the walls during one of the many pep rallies. We may be called starry-eyed idealists if we do, but what of it? If we do not aspire to achieve the greatest goals that we can possibly set and if we are not in some way made better persons by so doing, of what good is all the education that is avail- able to us? Each day should be an experience from which we learn from the past so that we may be more valuable to ourselves and to the world. Sports, music, clubs, Student Council and all the other activities in which students may engage take on deeper significance if we have a goal. Tests, homework, that book we read the night before book reports were due, and our daily relationships with one another—all of these experiences serve to remind us of our purpose. In short, this purpose is to improve ourselves for the present and for whatever lies ahead. As we walk through the door for the last time, let us remember the good times; but let us reflect also upon our personal gain and upon our usefulness to all mankind. If we do this, then surely we may consider it a privilege to have attended West Chester High School. Robert Micken President — Class of 1963 74 SHARYL L. Ill Acknowledgements As tin curtain falls oil our stage, a resurgence of excitement fills the audience: the third act is about to begin. Ahead lies the future with its hopes and dreams awaiting us. We have been trained and guided throughout two thirds of our lives, but the remainder must be traveled alone. Thus each of us must utilize his abilitv and assume his role in life. This brief glimpse of our days spent at W est Chester High could not have been accomplished without tin assistance of many people. The Garnet anti It life staff wishes to acknowledge the aid given to us by Mr. Millard I). Freeman and the Daily Local Aews. It was through these sources that we obtained excellent photographs, preserving our memories forever. As new obstacles arose we were given constant direction by Miss Mary Santilli, editorial advisor. Mrs. June W eissman, business advisor and Mr. W illiam P. Lear, advisor of the art staff. We sincerely thank William T. Cooke Publishing, Inc. for alleviating our technical problems. Through the combined efforts of all those involved, the stage has been set for the 1963 Garnet and White. Connie (larnecchia. Editor Schramm keeps pace with modern industry...
