Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1962 volume:

The members of the 1962 Garnet and White staff are proud to introduce you to the War- rior, the symbol of the spirit of West Chester Senior High School. The Warrior has left many trail mar- kers along the pathway through the school year, and it is his pleasure to guide you down this marked trail of memories. 4 9n Jhibids. It is with respect and admiration that we pay formal tribute to Mr. Harry E. Carroll, for his retirement in June of 1962 will mark the end of twenty-four years of service to West Chester Senior High School. Mr. Carroll received his B. S. from Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania and since that time has taken several additional courses at Shippensburg College, West Chester State College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. During his stay here Mr. Carroll has taught both general science and biology. He has also coached Junior and Senior High football and has acted as assistant coach in Senior High basketball. Mr. Carroll has always been a steady, dependable teacher and has had no regrets about having made “no speeches in assemblies.” As for the future he seems to have a desire for travel, but he does have definite plans to “just loaf, that’s all.” 9n VlfbLMtfVLaM On March 16, 1961, West Chester High School lost one of its most faithful and beloved faculty members, Mr. Ivan D. Neidermyer. Mr. Neidermyer came to our school in 1946 as Head of the Latin Department and held that position for fifteen years. Throughout these years he also served as a class sponsor and sponsor of the Latin and German Clubs. Those who knew him best will remember his quiet sense of humor and his sincerity in helping every one of his students. All who understood his love for German and the classical languages will recall his enthusiasm when German was intro- duced into the school system. A memorial Latin Cup and German Award have been established in his honor, and it is with the same respect and esteem that we retain the memorv of such a devoted man. 6 (bsidkaiion The members of the 1962 Garnet and White staff are proud to dedicate this yearbook to West Chester’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. G. Arthur Stetson. Dr. Stetson has held this position since 1938, and his retirement in June of this year marks the end of twenty-four years as head of the school system. Throughout the years Dr. Stetson has introduced many new programs into both the elementary and secondary schools, effecting a type of educational revolution within the structure of the system. The completion of integration, the establishment of the jointure in 1948, the introduction of the concept of the small school within the school, and the addition of advanced classes are only a few examples of Dr. Stetson’s achievements at West Chester. In addition to executing his duties as superintendent. Dr. Stetson has participated in many church activities and has served on several state educa- tional committees. A past president of Rotary, he has worked on the local Y.M.C.A. and Tuberculosis Boards and has been appointed a life member of tbe National Education Association. These additional activities will continue to take up much of Dr. Stetson’s time; however, he insists that he will now be able to do “those things I’ve never had time to do.’ 7 Sitting: Mr. David R. Barrett, Administrative Assistant; Mr. Harold H. Wingerd, Assistant Superintendent of Schools; Mr. Robert B. McCarter, Principal; Mr. David C. Fray, Assistant Principal. Standing: Dr. G. Arthur Stetson, Superintendent of Schools. flDminiSTRRTion DR. ELLWOOD SPELLMAN President of fVest Chester Joint Junior-Senior High School Hoard. We wish to thank our faculty, administrators, and school hoard for their guidance and leadership in directing us toward our future goals. Throughout the 1961-1962 school year these few people took upon themselves the responsibility of stimulating, enrich- ing, and guiding the lives of many students. Their lot was not an easy one in this year of the school’s evaluation. We meet these people every day — in the classroom, at school events, during extracurricular activities — and remem- ber how the “ruling elders” have strengthened the characters of all of us, even if it has been in only one small way. As we follow the paths of our own choosing, we realize that the journey wall be made easier because of their influence. Librarian Miss Florence E. Schmidt Dietician Mrs. Claire S. The approach of graduation naturally causes all of us to reflect upon the days here at West Chester Senior High School. As we ponder over our countless experiences, which of these will truly remain a significant part of our treasured remem- brances? To some it will be the experience of having achieved honor roll status as a result of diligent study. To others it will mean having scored a touchdown or taken an active part in sports. To the less athletic, but equally spirited, the fun-filled shouting of cheers will always convey a special importance. Some will never forget the weary pleasure of decorating for the long awaited prom. The musically-inclined will recall the rhythmic steps of the marching band and the gentle reverence of the Christmas program. Many, however, will need only the cherished reminder that they were once seniors — a time of life that comes just once. Surely we, as seniors, have received in high school an education that will prepare us for the future. But, more important than this, we have achieved the mental and moral soundness that is so vital to success in today’s troubled world. JOHN D. ROSS President—Class of 1962 JOHN A. The cheerleading squad, headed by co-captains Judy Klein and Elaina McCartney, was under the stimulating supervision of Miss Dixon. They helped to strengthen school spirit by organizing pep rallies, intro- ducing new cheers, and promoting the distribution of “pep tags.” Both the Majorettes and Colorguard, led by drum majorette Judy Harris, head majorette Nancy Taylor, and colorguard captain Gail Holgren, helped to add color, variety, and excitement to half-time shows and parades. The band’s entertaining pre-game per- formances and half-time shows con- tributed a great deal to our school spirit, and the band members with their jubilant support of the cheer- leaders were really the Warriors’ greatest fans. When new hear! coach John Serff took over the reins of the soccer team this year, it was readily apparent that West Chester High would uphold its reputation as a soccer hotbed. Headed by seniors Joe Facciolli and Bill Powell, a group of boys with plenty of game experience and a tremendous desire to play soccer delivered their usual, fine season record. FOOTBALL “Go on out there, have some fun, and knock somebody down.” These words stimulated the West Chester High football squad, under new head coach A1 Bruno, to begin the 1961 season with a 20-13 victory over Ambler. The gridiron Warriors under co-captains Dick Nast, Jack Owens, and Bob Thomas continued to follow' the advice of Coach Bruno, ending the season with a record of three wins, six losses, and one tie. The additional aid given by assistant coaches Joe Smida and John Johnson and a strong desire to win enabled the Warriors to post victories over Owen J. Roberts and Boyertown. For the first time in many years something called “football spirit” was rejuvenated at W est Chester. 70 Tight hold hy Warriors fells an enemy brave. The Indianhead has been a vital part of our school life for only four years, but during that time it has developed into one of the most active extracurricular organizations. On the printed pages of each monthly edition is found news coverage of every phase of our high school activity. Important events are noted in full; current fads and interests are entertainingly presented; sports and sports personalities are carefully analyzed; and the gentle banter of familiar issues is ever-present. This year’s editors, Debbie Goodridge and Eileen Bonar, worked continually to organize, assign, and proof-read the paper’s articles. Month by month the Indianhead serves the school in the best interests of all concerned, earning the position only through the careful supervision of faculty advisor, Mr. Kenneth Gambone. 76 DEBRTMG CLUB Front Row: J. West Chester High turns out to be a hot contender for the Ches-Mont crown. This year was no exception as the Warriors came in a close third in the first half race. In doing this the team presented Coach Jack McClellan with his 100th victory since his taking over the mentorship at West Chester. With Jay Levine earning the Most Valuable Player trophy and Joe Facciolli and Levine being named to the all-tournament team. West Chester also won the American Legion Invita- tional Christmas Tournament. Entering into the second half competition, the scalp-hungrv Warriors trampled Boyertown. This fact has been proven by the spunky Warriorettes who have kept right on win- ning games. The girls smothered all opposition this year until they dropped a heart-breaker to a powerful Boyertown club hv only five points. They quickly rebounded from their defeat and got back on the winning track, where, with Sue Marinofsky and Marion Rush consistently ripping the cords from the outside and Kathy Facciolli bombing them in from all over the court, they are expected to stay. WRESTLIflG West Chester High grapplers, under the mentorship of Coach Jack Stahl, posted a res- pectable record despite the over-abundance of sophomores and the lack of experienced upper classmen. Led by co-captains Jerry Jenkins and Dave Shaffer the Warriors opened the season drubbing Unionville 52-0. Springfield, Marple- Newtown, and Ridley Township proved too strong competition for the Warriors, but with steady improvement the matmen rolled over their next opponents, Springford and Octorara. Sensing a chance for its first championship, a determined Warrior squad bowled over a good Coatesville team but could do little to thwart powerful Conestoga. The expected improvement of a dominant sophomore team should move West Chester High into contention for the Ches-Mont champ- ionship within the next two years. Front Row: D. Arvizu, G. Wheeler, J. FUTURE FRRmERS of nmcRicn The activities of the Future Farmers of America Club have proven to be extremely profitable during the past year according to faculty advisor, Mr. Stevens. Under the leadership of capable officers, F.F.A. has successfully effected many projects and field trips. The officers were as follows: President, John Reagan; Vice- President, William Brown; Secretary, Elwood Spriggs; Treas- urer, William Gillespie; Chaplain, Howard Brown. A tour of Apple Brook Farm, an annual excursion to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show, and participation in F.F.A. basketball games highlighted the year’s events. The club was financed by membership dues and various fund-raising projects. One of West Chester High School’s most active organizations is its dramatic club, the Sock and Buskin Club. Through the efforts of faculty advisor. Miss Ethel Reagan, the group’s conscientious members have learned many of the fine points of acting and have staged several enjoyable programs during the year. On November 17th and 18th the club presented its production of Ask Any Girl, a three-act comedy. This play was a great success, receiving much acclaim from its audiences. During the Christmas holidays the club prepared several tableaux for the Annual Christmas Program, given in co- operation with the choruses. The arrival of spring brought with it the traditional presentation of the three one- act plays; however, a “first” this year in the club’s activities, a one-act play was presented at the New Century Club in May. A crisis seems to have arisen between Sharyl Weeks and Alan Laudenslager as Wayne Long- acre watches intently during drama production. Student carolers pose during Tableaux scene of Christmas program. It was during the holiday season that the Advanced Chorus was invited to participate in the Student Carol Singing at the Philadelphia International Airport. This group participated in another exchange after their performance of Victor Herbert’s “The Fortune Teller,” and several of the outstanding members of the West Chester choral groups represented the choruses at District Chorus in the spring. The choral year culminated with the presentation of the Spring Concert, which was followed later by the Commencement program.
