“To everything there is a SEASON and a time to every purpose under the Heaven.” Ecc. 3:1 WEST CHESTER JOINT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WEST CHESTER, PA. A brisk autumn atmosphere and thoughts of the new school year summon us from our lazy summer vacation to the Senior High School fold. Friendships are made and re- newed. Chilly, bright days motivate fall sports and activities, and the multitude of flaming fall colors have a special significance to those in their senior year. This season moves as rapily and as sharply as the drum beat of our band; collections for the United Fund, Thanksgiving festivities, vigorous studying, and happy cheers in the clear sky re- mind us all of the busy fall months. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Teachers' characteristics and classroom person- alities ore as varied as those of us who daily sit before them. Some are inveterate homework col- lectors; others are not. Some are immune to the evils of chewing gum; others seethe at its sight. Some are devotees of the surprise quiz, while others overawe us with the power of the six weeks’ test. One wanders restlessly about and another stands rapt as he pours out the knowledge that is his. For some, education is a grim business and the classroom a solemn spot; for others, education is enhanced, not lessened, by a ready wit or a glint in the eye. Some of us may find only amusement or annoyance in these, our teachers; but those who will — find, more importantly — instruction, stimu- lation, and inspiration. However, our faculty members are occupied with many things other than teaching. To us, Mr. Lady means class rings as well as history. We see Miss Jenny planning for a Future Nurses' meeting, while Miss Lewis completes arrangements for the Honors Banquet, and Mr. Gambone chases that final Indianhead deadline all the way to the printers. And so each has his job beyond the classroom and thus contributes not only to our academic education but also to the many activities which we enjoy. These, our teachers, are but a tiny segment of humanity, as varied as life itself. In some way, the life of each one of us, has been significantly touched by the life of some of them. The members of the 1961 Sarnef and White staff have planned and experimented in an effort to create a unique record of this school year. The success of those plans and experiments is a result of the guidance of several people. They include the faculty advisers, Miss Trapnell, Mrs. Weiss- man, and Mr. Lear, and our capable editor, Betsy Bullock. This year's Garnet and White is the product of the com- bined skills of the art, business, editorial, photography, and typing staffs. The result is an account of life at West Chester Joint Senior High School throughout the seasons. Typists: S. Blei, H. Capanna, C. Rosenberry, G. Rosenberry. This year was a very successful one for Sfudent Council, under the direction of our guidance counselors, Miss Dixon and Mr. Labin. and the faculty adviser, Mrs. Ford. Council's officers, President Bruce Bonaventure, Vice- President Bruce Schaeffer, Secretary Elaine Powell, and Treasurer Jack Martens, capably governed the proceedings. Various committees were chosen to carry out the plans that Council formulated, and many new developments were made. Through- out the year the members of Student Council organized informal record hops, along with the usual formal dances, and the annual skating party. Codes for dances, school dress, and safe driving were adopted. The members of Student Council do much of the behind-the-scene work for our school, and we congratulate this year's members for their outstanding contributions. West Chester High School’s Cross Country team finished the I960 season with a very successful record of seven wins and two losses. This showing clinched third place in Ches-Mont League com- petition for the Warrior Harriers. They were led this year by their senior co-captains Jim Johnston and Randy Sweet. The two losses were to Coates- ville and Pottstown, but by only five points each. At the Pottstown meet, Jim Johnston and Junior George Wolfer both broke records previously set by Colin MacKinnon of Conestoga. George Wolfer also finished fourth in the Districts and qualified for the State Championships. Coach Ed Malikowski checks the time as cross-country co- captain Jim Johnston crosses the finish line to break another record. Ace runners Johnston and Wolfer, who both broke several records, led the squad through a successful season. Under the capable leadership of coaches Oliver and Serff and co-captains John Huber and Jim Facciolli the Warrior soccer team completed a most successful season by tying Pequea Valley for the Inter-district co-championship. Prior to this the Booters had beaten Kennett Square to become co-champions of the Southern Chester County League and captured the District crown by defeating Lower Merion. The Booters’ final record was twelve wins, three losses, and three ties and their league record was eight wins, one loss, and one tie. With only six seniors leaving the varsity team, the prospects for a successful 1961 season are very bright. SOCCER FRONT ROW: L. Wheeler, S. Dorsey, R. Wager, L. Gerhard, D. Russ, C. Fox, C. In the first game of the season they defeated Conestoga for the first time in five years. They went on to defeat Downing- town, Owen J. Roberts, Boyertown, Phoenixville, and Coatesville. The only defeat in league competition was Pottstown, 0-1. A combina- tion of outstanding teamwork and coaching made such a successful season possible. The final record was seven wins and one loss. Although many team members will grad- uate, coaches Clark and Weir feel that with the basis of a good junior varsity season the varsity can have a winning record in 1961. Mardell Rowland, senior warriorette, lunges to stop the surge tor goal made by an opponent, Mardell is one of the seniors who led the team in their many victories. 21 The Warrior reserves watch an exciting play, hop- ing that the coach will soon send them into the game. Football is only one of Bruce's many and varied activities. Although the I960 football team's record is disappointing, o great deal of credit must be given to the players and coaches. Many people have made unjust criticisms without realizing that, in this year of rebuilding, more than 75% of the squad was composed of under- classmen and that next year there will be twenty varsity lettermen returning. Vince Giordano, a senior, was awarded the most valuable player trophy and made honorable mention on the All-Ches-Mont team. Many underclassmen also showed signs of promise, and we are looking forward to improvement next year. The athletic department and the student body were sorry to learn of the resignation of head coach Glenn Von Stetten. Mr. Von Stetten has held the position of head coach for the past four years, and his successor will find it difficult to fill the position as well. A colorful attraction at our football games is the Marching Band, including the Majorettes and the Color Guard, which gives a magnificent performance before each game and at half-time, not mentioning the many songs it plays during the game itself fi 7X JJ to arouse the team s spirits. Besides appearing at the football games, rain or shine, it is also seen in school assemblies and in a number of parades; among these are the Hallowe'en Parade and the Veterans' Day Parade. This year the band had a new addi- tion, an all-girl color guard. We certainly enjoy watching and listening to the band as it executes many routines, thus earning our fullest acknowledgment as rendering an unlimited contribu- tion to our school. The smart looking color guard, for the first time consisting of girls, is led by Marcy Thomas: and the perky majorettes are led by Sandy Hickman and Jayne Jamieson and coached by Miss Edwards. We certainly thank these girls for their contribution to our school spirit this year. Our rhythmic majorettes and color guard add luster to our fall Saturdays. CHEERLEADERS Left to right: C. Its members study music of various styles and forms ranging from Bach to Gershwin. Their main objective is performing for the annual Spring Concert. Individuality is a key word in the orchestra. To be honored this year in the District Orchestra are the following: Polly Middleton, cello; Patricia Fletcher, viola; Mary Mullison. violin; and Jim Sinclair, trumpet. The members of the concert orchestra receive course credit and gain a wide knowledge and appreciation of expression through music. INDIANHEAD Our school paper, The Indianhead, is one of the many things West Chester High students can be justifiably proud of. The superior quality of news reporting, the wonderful regular features, and the sports articles all combine to make the paper a true reflection of school life. Much of the credit for this success goes to the faculty adviser, Mr. Kenneth Gambone, editors Kenneth Jones and Debra Goodridge, and their fine staff of assistant editors and reporters. Assisting with the financial aspects of the publication are Miss Louise West, faculty adviser, and business managers Tom Priest and Roland Stern, and an active corps of homeroom representatives. For students, this long season is an important one, both academically and socially. In spite of shivery snows, wintertime has a special charm; Christmas takes the form of happy spirit at the annual dance and re- ligious calm at the annual choral program. The sharp contrast of walk- ing into the bright, warm gymnasium from the dark, cold air for a night basketball game, vital council meet- ings, and the many senior obligations help constitute the affairs for this time of the year. Any sophomore, junior, or senior readily admits that hibernation is practically impossible. The Warriors are a team of hustling ballplayers who have learned how to stay together under pressure and pull out thrilling, last second victories. By mid-season the Warriors had posted a 10-4 record in overall action and had finished third in the first half of the Ches-Mont league with a record of 6-3. With high scorers Phil Evoli, Joe Facciolli, and Dave Dupree supported by the rest of the team, the Warriors should improve their first half stand- ings and finish in the thick of the Ches-Mont race. Their most spectacular win was against Westtown (44-17), a team which West Chester had failed to beat for several years. According to our new coach, Mrs. Clark, the secret of this year's victories has been a shifting zone defense, excellently executed by guards, Ann McNeil, Donna Smith, and Rosemary Drewes. Co-captains Mardell Rowland and Ann McNeil have held the squad together for some fine ball playing. High scorers at mid-season were Barbara Leighton, Susie Marinofsky, Mardell Rowland, and Kathy Facciolli. Barbara Leighton jumps for a high pass as Susie Marinofsky stands by for a fast play. 43 Co-captain Bruce Bonaventure demonstrates a hold on John Pyle in the Wrestling Assembly. The wrestling team captained by Bruce Bona- venture and Maurice Wesley, and coached by Mr. Jock Stahl, has made a very impressive show- ing this year. They defeated such rivals as Union- ville, William Tennent, Octarara, and Coatesville. The other seniors on the team are John Pyle, Tom Sicoli, Art Green, Dick Calhoun, Louis Scarfo, and Jerry Morrow. With many underclassmen on the team, the outlook for next year is very bright. Although wrestling is relatively unknown to the stu- dent body, this year's team has done a meritorious job in bringing honor to the name of West Chester High School. Front Row: M. Wesley, J. The Varsity Club is an organization to which every varsity player on every boys' team automatically belongs. This group with 30 members has Marshall Craw- ford as president, Vince Giordano as vice-president, Jon Morse as secretary, and Mills Davis as treasurer. The football and basketball programs at home games ore provided by the Varsity Club. The group meets with Mr. Stahl twice a month. One of its aims is to see each athlete who has played a varsity position for three years receive a blazer. The Varsity Club also sponsored record hops. At an informal noontime meeting, Mr. Stahl leads the Varsity Club discussion. VARSITY CLUB AC Maurice Wesley attempts to pin his opponent while team members look on from the sidelines. Barbara Leighton and Kathy Facciolli try to recover the ball as Mardell Rowland stands by. 46 SPORTS SNAPS Whistle in mouth, the ref, along with Kathy Facciolli, keeps an eye on Sue Marinofsky. Joe Facciolli does his best to evade his opponent's outstretched hand. Mr. Stratton Stevens and George Willenbroclc examine an ear of corn which is one item in which F.F.A. members are interested. George is president of the F.F.A. and Mr. Stevens is the group’s advisor. The Future Farmers of America is a national organ- ization of young men interested in the many facets of agriculture and enrolled in the vocational agriculture courses in our high schools. The purpose of this organ- ization is to instruct the members in public speaking and parliamentary procedure and to encourage and instruct them in keeping accurate farm records. The F.F.A. takes part in projects to improve the community and make rural life more enjoyable. It is a self-supporting organization. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Front Row: (sifting) R. Marron, E. Los Conquistadores meet on the first and third Thursday of each month to practice using the Spanish language and to become familiar with the customs, literature, and arts of Spain and Latin America. Miss Ethel Reagan is faculty adviser, and Connie Williams is president of the group which consists of forty-five members. One of the club's annual projects is a Spanish dinner. It is prepared by the club members; the menu consists of typical Latin American foods. Another of the club's social events is their Christmas party. Spanish games, music, and refreshments add to the evening's entertainment. Before Christmas, the club members also sing carols in the halls; the songs are sung in Spanish. The picture at right shows the group as they perform a carol. A Chilly White Winter Will Long Remember That West Chester 61 Wonderful, wonderful Spring comes to West Chester, and the campus is alive again with students racing from the cafeteria to favorite spots under the trees. All classes compete on Field Day, and there is always a special battle between the junior class and the senior class. Seniors in particular welcome this season, but for them, there is little time for spring fever. Leaves budding on the trees mean plans must be made for the prom, the unforget- table Senior Assembly, and the Senior Dinner Dance—delicious food, dreamy music, and the warm, sweet atmosphere of spring on the ride home. Laughter on Baby Day and exams are popular topics of con- versation. And finally, the most meaningful of all spring events, graduation. FRONT ROW: B. Brown. B. Leighton, N. Pleasants, S. High, L. We remember the excitement of the soccer games, and cheering ourselves hoarse at many other athletic events. We remember struggling with the slide rule in trig, slaving over our Shakespeare, and keeping up to date on world news and the latest scientific inventions. How we dreaded college board examinations and waited nervously for the results. How proud we were of the seniors who carried off honors in the speaking contests. We do not mean to give the impression that school was all study, for we had a lot of fun, too. Forgetting our dignity as seniors, we acted silly on Baby Day. The Senior Prom and the Senior Dinner Dance were nights we shall never forget. The road has been long and difficult, but we have succeeded in attain- ing our goal. This success would not have been possible without the assistance of our teachers, parents, guidance counselors, and administrators. Our educa- tion has helped prepare us for the challenges which must be met in life. What lies ahead of us on the road to follow? Some of us will go on to college; others will find work or enter the armed forces. Whatever our choice, West Chester High School will always remain a happy part of our memories. Early in our senior high school career, we were saddened by the death of two of our classmates, Richard Miller and Carl Hollagher. Their many friends will long remember the happy times they shared with us. —Edward Mandes “dio whom, the yod jjauifi, disA in youth” — PLATUS CARL HALLAGHER RICHARD MILLER 1940—1960 1941 — 1958 SENIOR CLASS ACTIVITIES The following activities were compiled as of January I, 1961.
