In this year many responsibilities and important decisions have been placed on you. As you retrace your footsteps through these pages we hope that wherever your individual paths may lead, fond memories of this school year will follow. FACULTY To our school board, to our administrators, to our faculty— we say thank you for marking the path to on education that will help us take our place in this complex world. Yours has not been an easy task. Never before have the schools of our country been so freely criticized, both by word of mouth and in print. You have walked calmly forward through this crisis, having planned carefully the path you wished to take. This path has pro- vided for expansion of our building facilities and has emphasized the need for a challenging curriculum. It has made room for more science and mathematics without losing sight of the need for the arts and the humanities. By example and by teaching, you have shown us the need for self-discipline and moral integrity. We are proud to follow in your footsteps, and in the years ahead, may you be proud of us. DR. Ruth Pratt, Vivian Hash, and Lynn Robins looking forward to I960. 39 0 0 0 Smu iA Atcvrf oUihe hiqhi flooi As Bob Bunnell, president of the Class of 1959, draped the traditional garnet mantle over the shoulders of Juan Mejia, president of the Class of I960, a new group stepped into the foreground at West Chester High. But our class president was not the only one to receive a mantle at that Senior Assembly; while Bob passed on a cloak of cloth, his class bestowed one of responsibility. For the Seniors, being the leaders of the school can be quite pleasant. But we cannot forget what was entrusted to us by the departing Class of 1959: the responsibility to carry on all school customs, functions, and institutions. By this, we do not mean only the proms, field days, concerts, tag days, and other affairs which have been so successful and enjoyable in the past. The Class of I960 must maintain the same high standards of scholarship and sportsmanship that have been set by previous classes. It has been left to us, the seniors, to improve the appear- ance of our school, to be proud of our school, its students, and its activities, and to represent it honorably and conscientiously wherever we go. We shall continue to strive for excellence, both in the classroom and on the athletic field, with the hope that we may set a worthy example for the underclassmen to follow when they assume the leadership of the school. Assistant Coach Steyck, Assistant Coach McMahon, Coach Von Stetten. The year 1959 will not be remembered as one of the more successful football seasons at West Chester. The Warriors finished the season with a record of two wins and seven losses. The two wins were over Conshohocken and Pottstown, while the losses were to Coatesville. Boyertown, Phoenixville. Spring-Ford. Owen J. Roberts, Downingtown, and Conestoga. Although the Warriors lost the Conestoga game by a score of 18-0, it is generally conceded to be the best Warrior game of the 1959 season. Graduating seniors include co-captains Skip Moyer and Fred Sadler as well as Harry McVeigh, Dick Hall. Marvin Williams, Horace Webb, Brooke Davis, Bob Chester, and Tim Nanni. Carl Dahl and Gary Erb captained the Warriors to fourth place in the Ches-Mont Championships, and eighth in a field of sixteen in the District Champion- ships. Junior Jim Johnston placed eighteenth in the Districts, a very impressive showing. Although Coach Malikowski will lose such runners as Carl Dahl, Gary Erb, and Dave Slawek, returning letterman Randy Sweet, Jim Johnston, George Wolfer, Dave Closson, and Jon Morse will form a good nucleus for the I960 squad. Coach Malikowski and Co-Captain Carl Dahl discuss a meet as runners Slawek, Morse, Sweet, and Johnston look on. dtahJiWiA pace Asut jon 65 J'lsisd-faoisud dCocluuj. The Warriorettes of 1959 had a very success- ful season. They started slowly with losses to Conestoga and Downingtown, but came back with wins over Conshohocken and Owen J. Roberts. The game played with Phoenixville was the best example of our team's ability. A combination of spirit and team play aided them in their victory. The final record was 5 wins, I tie, and 2 losses. Coaches Bucks and Dalton have high hopes for next year's team with the graduation of only four varsity players: Jackie Winans, left wing: Barbara Jackson, left halfback; Edith Johnson, right halfback: and June Sturzebecker, fullback. Eoch section of the Garnet and White staff functions as o separate unit, but molding the finished product is a team project. The I960 year- book has been made possible by just such a team effort. We have had unlimited help from Mr. Ed- ward Ursprung of the Cooke Publishing Company, and from Mr. Millard Freeman, our photographer. We are grateful, too, to the Daily Local News for the use of several pictures. With much needed guidance from our own faculty advisors, Miss Trap- nell, Mrs. Weissman, and Mr. Lear, we of the I960 staff feel we have been able to produce an ex- ceptionally fine book. Under the direction of Miss Reagan these budding actors and actresses provided two enjoyable eve- nings of entertainment for the student body. Three •one-act plays— The Blue Teapot, A More Per- fect Union, and Patterns —were presented in November while an outstanding performance of Lost Horizon, a three-act play, was given in March. Not only the actors but also the committees— costumes, staging, properties, and make-up—are essential for a polished presentation. Working together, they made the dramatic club a real success!
