ADVERTISEMENTS 4 uakecafuf As the class of 1950 is graduated from West Chester High School, the staff of the Garnet and White endeavors to present in this yearbook a record of our school years. The most outstanding feature of our 1950 yearboolc is the combination of art and photography. With much patience and deliberation our art staff constructed the small, three-dimensional, paper sculpture figures which adorn the divider pages. Of course we liberally inserted the Warrior, our school symbol, throughout the boolc. It can easily be noticed that changes, enormous or minute, concerning artworlc or major problems, are necessary and must constantly be taking place. The experiences which the class of 1950 has thus far encountered in its three short years of high school are material proof of this fact. We were the last to have classes in the old senior high building, the lost to have the opportunity of malcing general bedlam in B-6 during lunch hour, to create extreme confusion in the loclcer rooms, and to resist the temptation of walking down the senior steps. After the fire it was neces- sary for us to adjust ourselves to new hours, heavier schedules, and the absence of many popular extra-curricular activities. We hope that the changes which we have experienced in the past three years will enable us to face with competence any new situations which we may encounter in the future. ARTHUR STETSON Superintendent of Schools You have completed a phase of your education, but, since education is a continuous process, do not stop. The importance of education is just two things: character and good manners. Any person who can develop these characteristics is educated. Be courteous and polite. That is a stage of civilization that all of us have not attained. Use your own mind for what it is worth, for you developed it. Do the best with what you have. The real tragedy of life is not being limited to one talent but failing to use that one talent. Start where you are with what you have and never be satisfied. Two forces worlcing to control your mind are fear and faith. Rather than fear, have faith in yourself, in your fellow man, and in God. Courtesy, politeness, energy, faith-culti- vate and practice these. B. REED HENDERSON. Superintendent. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 'l95Ol You are graduating in a year of stress and strain both at home and abroad, much of which is the result of a break-down in ethical standards. What is right? This is the question your genera- tion must answer. As citizens and future parents you must determine a mores for the community that will give you and yours a standard of conduct that is worthy of your inheritance, and on which you can depend with confidence. E DWIN GRANITE THE JUNIOR CLASS The members of the Junior Class have tried to be of service to the community and to the school. Because ol the present schedule ofthe school, we have not done much as a class. We have been ol service through the Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, Scouts, churches, and other organizations. By being of service through organizations out- side the school, we are practicing democracy and the responsibilities of citizens while in our classes learning the theories. We hope to continue being of service next year and for the rest of our lives. JUNIOR HOMEROOM TEACHERS MISS EMILY L. HOFFMEIER MR. IVAN D. NEIDERMYER MR. HERBERT E. PEARL MISS LETTIE I. KELLER MRS. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is, without a doubt, one ol the most important bodies oper- ating in our school. It is through the representatives ol the council, elected by their lellow students, that the views and ideas of the school body are voiced. The Council is an important factor in all school social events, sports programs, and other activities. This year Council exhibited its school spirit and stamina in the work on the Thanks- giving bontire. As the school year draws to a close, the Council ol 1949-50 hopes that it has helped to make our school a better organized,a more systematic place, and that future councils will accomplish even bigger and better things. 48 Un WLM 7fze Sfaow DRAMATIC CLUB First Row: Bussey, Farra, Hennicke, Parry, English, Lambert, Clifford, Smith, Trego, Dickinson, Holman, Baker. They hit their winning stride again in a win over Downingtown. The game was forfeited to West Chester in the middle of the last quarter because the crowd got out of hand. The Warriors suffered their first setback at the hands of a strong Pottstown combine, 13 to O. Then they lost two more decisions in a row to Coatesville and Medio, both by the same 7 to 6 score. They hit their winning ways a ain with a decisive victory over a highly touted Haverford team, winning by a 98 to 6 score. The Turkey Day game with Berwyn afforded thrills galore, but the score ended in a 6 to 6 deadlock. This year's team was greatly hampered by injuries, but their record of 5 wins, 2 ties, and 3 losses was a formidable one. The Warrior Maids started by chalking up the 'l4th straight victory. Ruthie Harrison, captain and veteran player, led West Chester to a decisive 7-O victory over Pottstown. Remember that Berwyn game? lt was at the hall that the score stood Q-'l in favor of Berwyn, but West Chester staged a fine comeback to win, when Woodie, our little left-inner, pulled us out of our tight spot by making two goals in the second half. Score: 3-Q. After a stiff annual battle with Spring City on October 13th, the Garnet and White added another victory with a score of 3-1. 72 West Chester set a fast pace in the second half to trip Media by a Q-O score. With no score in the first half, Dot Benner and Jane Clifford scored the goals in the second half which represented West Chester's ultimate edge. On October 97 West Chester met Wilmington Friends in a thrilling match on the high school field. All of our scoring was done in the first half, while stiff competition was given us in the second half. The backfield playing was an important factor in holding back our foes to a 3-Q victory for the Warrior Maids. The team ended the longest winning streak of its history when we were beaten 3-1 by West- town. This was the first defeat of the year and our first after 18 straight triumphs over a span of three seasons. Probably the most logical reason for our defeat was that we lacked some of the smoothness of teamwork which marked our earlier tests. Keep those sticks down! Look up before you shoot! Passl Pass! Pass! With this advice we played a season of six wins and two losses. We wish to thank Mrs. Taylor for her splendid coaching and our loyal supporters for backing us. Twenty-nine of us will be grad- j uated tonight, the largest class in the history of the West Chester High School, and nine are young menl IU -in Q. 5 1 j My white dress and beautiful white gloves are ready. We are each going to carry a lovely bouquet and a white fan. The young men will do their best to look well in black suits. The Assembly Building is decorated with dwarf palms and floral designs. Blue and yellow, the class colors, are everywhere in evidence. We have rehearsed the program carefully, and l do hope everything will go well. lil i i ' U tjlihf. ' rv, i my rp' X l j l My graduation is a fitting climax to the nice time l have had this 'ijt year. Two days ago, June nineteenth, we held our class day 'lil exercises. At these we heard our history, prophecy, poem, and li ode. Many members of the class have had parties to which theothers have been invited. Parlor games, the waltz, and delicious re- freshments were enjoyed. The junior class, as usual, had charge of the annual school picnic at Lenape. Basketball, football, and baseball had their usual popularity in the school. While the young men engaged in these dangerous sports, we ladies had several stimulating and exciting games of croquet and tennis. The more serious side of my school life this year included algebra, Latin, and Greek. l believe Greek class to be the most enjoyable to me. As there was no teacher of Greek in the high school, each morning we took a brisk walk to the Normal School. Sometimes we would stop at homes of the class members for fresh strawberries and other delicacies. I did enjoy the bi-weekly meetings of the Girls' Literary Society. They were so up-lifting! The young men at this time attended Boys' Debating Club. Many scholastic contests were enjoyed by the entire student body. The D. Webster Meredith Gold Medal in Oratory was awarded to Charles l-lewson Canning for his stirring rendition of Patrick l-lenry's speech before the Virginia l-louse of Burgesses. Cornelia Marion Smith won the Joseph S. Evans Book Prize in Declamation. The William Dowlin Book prizes in English Composition were awarded as usual. The senior winner was Marian Virginia Pierce, who had the honor of being the valedictorian of the class. Manual training prizes were awarded in the fields of mechanical drawing, wood carving, and wood work. Ah, yes,,this school year has been exciting, but at last it draws to a close. Our class has upheld the standards expected, and the class of 1900 will not soon be forgotten. u A MEMBER OF THE CLASS OF 1900 92 Iiaflq Dear Diary, This has really been a wonderful yearl Tonight at gradua- tion it will be officially over, but for most of us it will mean only the end of classes, for we shall continue to see our friends and remember the good times we have had. None of us will soon forget the wonderful dances and the terrific parties which we attended. The whole school really joined in and made all the social events go over with a bang f 4 l' W that Hwhipper-do with Downingtown. The band with their new uniforms really dazzled us out on the field. But what could compare with that marvelous basketball team of oursl They r. H J' really had the old fight in them, and they showed it by playing l i w A V twice at the Palestra. We struggled with essays and all kinds of exams and heard endless speeches on preparing ourselves for next year. Then there were those everlasting homework assignments which came without fail on the night that something else was going on. Everyone was given a chance to participate in the talent shows and the speaking and spelling contests. ln the Boys' Speaking Contest, especially good, a selection from Tom Sawyer and also Patrick l lenry's speech before the House of Burgesses were given. The Late Christopher Bean was a huge success, The cast was made up entire- ly of seniors, making it more than ever our senior play. Then the Sesqui cannot be forgotten. Many of us took part in the pageant and the other activities, and we really got a taste of life in 1799. We're all sad, dear Diary, to be leaving West Chester High, but it is certain that we will never forget the class of 1950 and the wonderful times we've had.
