SCHOOL BlEiLlLS Autumn, with its falling leaves and cool weather, was not always a sign that another year of school was beginning. ln fact, it wasn't until 1836 that a school law was adapted in Chester County. Despite the handicaps of defiant tax payers and inexperienced teachers, the West Chester schools were opened the following year. As education became more accepted, the need was felt for a consolidated building Barnard Street School was erected ln1841 ln186Q Church Street School was erected on the site of our recent high school building This was the first school containing the four upper grades as well as a few of grammar school level Since the first class, consisting of five girls, was graduated in 1866, manual training, vocal music, drawing, sewing, and other additions have been made to the curriculum Qver the span ofa century, our educational system has become one of which we can be proud Each generation has given its share to our present heritage It is the privilege of our generation to malce a large and lasting contribution to our school system that ofa new building Because of the unfortunate loss of our senior high school building it has been the duty of this present class to lceep up our high standard of achievement despite many obstacles as well as to anticipate our future school and build toward it On our frontlsplece we have portrayed the development of our school The Barnard Street School at the left the Church Street School at the right have been surpassed by our school of the future ln the foreground a boy and girl dressed IU the typical costume of 1849, personify the spirit of West Chester students which has prevailed over a century 40 K ' Aww!!
