Lest We Forge ' On the evening of Monday December twenty thlrd the people of West Chester were horrmfled by the rapidly spreading news that tne l-llgh School was going up ID uncontrollable flames lncredulous, everyone who could wallc drive or totter hurrued to the scene, they and thelr cars DGClCIDQ the streets for bloclcs around Mules out rn the country hugh school students thelr famulres and nerghbors saw the glow of the fnre and receuved exclted telephone calls from frlends Scores of them managed to malce thelr way unto town We anhabltants of West Chester and rural areas had never turned out for anything In so bug a way as we turned out to witness that catas trophe Little of the fllppancy that mlght have been expected was evldent among the students and alumnr who stood paclced IU the crowds watchtng helpless as our school roared and craclcled an flames Some of us crled other of us made feeble efforts at levlty whale stall others stood qulet and expressronless but we all felt the some sense of very real and nrreparable loss Perhaps not too strangely It was the small seemingly trnflung things that frrst struck us as we gazed at the flre that had been our school a few days before our lnltrals carved on our deslts, the whispering and note passing and marble rolling ID B6 the quietness and semi gloom of the halls which echoed our footsteps as we wallced down the halls long after the dlsmussal bell, our prlde ID the long awalted prtvnlege of the sensor steps So many of those unforgettable parts of our school llfe were brought to our minds as we saw furst the glow and then the flames creep unto one room after another We watched the firemen and the engines In futnle actlvlty Wnndows were shattered as the water poured Into the building, the boys and men went again and again Into the blazing bulldlng to brlng out all the records and equlpment that could be salvaged After the shoutlng and the tumult dled It was the unpleasant duty of school offlclals to get an estimate of the damage done The awful results of the lnvestlga tlon show d that the approximate loss on the building was S340 OOO That plus the loss on the equnpment totaled S490 OOO It would cost over Sl OOO OOO to replace thus loss today While we were enjoying our Chrrstmas vacatnon, Dr Stetson gathered the admlnlstrators and faculty together to malce hurrled plans for our return When we staggered bleary eyed Into the Junlor l-llgh building at the practlcally nocturnal hour of eight a m on January sixth, we found that our new schedules had been efficiently planned and our classes readjusted to the JUDIOI' Hugh bulldlng As the day wore on our drgestlve systems hunted to us that our lunch time was due but we were denied even the dubious satisfaction of cloclc watching All day through and even now the cloclcs are stlcltlng stubbornly to that story that the time IS 6 QQ The new Senior l-llgh building which was to be bullt at leisure must now be erected with all possible speed The estnmated cost of the new bulldlng IS SQOO OOO and the soonest possible date for Its completion 'l95O When and how our school will acquire a new home only tame wall tell The class of 48, the last class to pass a part of a sensor year tn the old bunldtng feels grateful for that pruvrlege Regardless of the convenuence and attractiveness of the new bulldung that rs to be we doubt that any of us wrll forget the school for which we have all felt such affection 8 1 ' 1 .. , .
