WEST CHESTER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL We, the senior class of 1987, are proud to present to you the ’87 Conqueror. The theme of our book is a new direction. As we go on in our lives we will be constantly moving onward to different places and in new directions. We trust the Lord will guide us and help us as we strive to find His will in our choices ahead, and that everyone of us will have Him lead us through life. I THANKS MR. FISHER! We the seniors of 1987, would like to dedicate this year’s Conqueror to a man who has proven himself as a teacher and a friend. He has always been patient and understanding with us ■even in the worst of situations. His example of Christian character will not be forgotten as we move on in our lives. No senior will ever forget the way he tried to get us enthusiastic about senior sales, and projects to make money. His joyful spirit is shone to all whether on the soccer field, gym class, basketball court, or in the comput- er room. We all have been blessed in some way by him and his bit of accent he has brought to us. Therefore, with admiration and honor we dedicate the 1987 Conqueror to Mr. Ron Fisher. -me. May I remind you that whereas up til now most decisions have been made for you: in the future more and more decisions will be yours alone. I am sure you have experienced many occasions when you expressed what you would do if you could. You may at least con- sidered how you would act, where you would go, with whom you would spend your time and so on. You have no doubt had to do many things over the years you would have preferred not to do and on the other hand refrained from things you have wanted to do. Get ready for the future. The school administrator and teachers are no longer in the picture. Dad and Mom will now gradually be pulling back their authority. You will stand directly answerable to the Lord for those places, people, practices and plans you have thought about in the past and are now considering for the future. We hope and pray the training you have received will go a long way m helping you form the convictions that will determine the pattern of your adult life. We will observe out of love and interest, trusting your testimony from high school graduation to heavenly graduation will exalt the Lord Jesus Christ. Sincerely in Christ, E. Allen Griffith Pastor ii JAMES EMORY ALLEU FOLLOWING AFTER THE LORD ELIZABETH ANN BURKE DEVOTED ONE James is a fun and interesting person, his sense of humor differs from most others in a way that most people do not understand. Voyager is a flight of fancy, of quaint possibility. A round-the-world flight without stopping and without refu- eling is one of the last firsts of atmospheric aviation. Perhaps be- cause such a feat had become almost an anachronism, no one be- fore had tried to accomplish it. The night was always considered impossible because no plane could carry enough fuel to take it 23.000 miles. But last week, while the attention of the nation was directed toward weightier, more dispiriting matters in Washing- ton, Voyager sailed over the Pacific, over Africa and into the South Atlantic, more than halfway home, offering the world a needed distraction. Voyagers journey called to mind Charles Lindbergh's daring solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927, and last week the Lone Eagle’s widow was tracking the plane's progress. ‘T am hold- ing my breath for them.” said Anne Mor- row Lindbergh of the crew. “What they are doing takes great courage and faith.” The mission came about through the faith of three principals: the two pilots. Tracyann Dean JH SOCCER CHEERLEADING VOLLEYBALL Kim Allen ‘crucial’ to Conqueror lineup fiy Stuart London KlH W TV Mr In the year after a conference championship in girls volleyball, the Spotlight at West Chester Christian School has turned to the team's only returning starter, sophomore Kim Allen. “Kim is the one we look to when she Is on the front line, said coach Lor- raine CaldwelL “We're rebuilding this year and Kim's play is crucial until the other girls get experience. Last year, the Conquerors won the Atlantic Coast Christian Athletic Conference. Five of the six starters from that champion team have grad- ated. So far this year, the Conquerors are a surprising 2-3 after defeating Upper Bucks Christian Academy 3-1 on Tuesday. Their latest win was even more impressive considering Allen had to sit out the game with a Srained ankle. She will be ready for ly this week. Being the focus of attention on the volleyball team has left Allen unaf- fected. “It’s no big deal,” Allen said. “I just tell them (teammates) to hit and do their best. Allen, who lives in the Feltonvllle section of Chester, comes from an athletic family. Her father, Bill, played baseball at Chester High. Her mother, Ruth, played field hockey and basketball at Eddystone High School. And her brother, Ted, a 1980 graduate of West Chester Christian, was a starter on the soccer, basket- ball and baseball teams and the 1980 ACCAC basketball MVP. With, the tiny pool of players avail- able to the coaches at W.C. Christian — the school in West Goshen has fewer than students — there was no way Ted Allen’s sister was going to get away from playing. “The basketball coach (Matt Pol- lockl has known me for years since I'm in the same class as his brother” Kim Allen said. But 1 wanted to try 56 out anyhow. I like volleyball and 1 love basketball.” Nov. 3 is circled on the Allen calen- dar because that is when basketball season starts. Volleyball is her better sport, but basketball is her favorite to play. Her classmates have dubbed her Barkley,” after Charles Barkley of the 76ers. Allen, a 5-5 forward, averaged 5.5 points as a part-time starter last year. Her numbers should go up this year because the basketball team has lost three starters and she has been prac- ticing at home with her father atvl brother. The only problem Kira Allen has with Conqueror athletics is that the spring there is no sports team far girls. It's boring, she said. “I wbk they would start a softball team. Dan Oblnger made 18 saves in goal for WCC. “IN THE NEWS ...” Westtown and West Chester Chris- tian also could field strong squads this year. Westtown has added transfers from Chester High, Georgetown Prep in Washingtown, D.C., and two play- ers from Boston, including a 6-foot, 8- inch center, Tony Sachs, to go along With the only returning starter, tal- ented 6-6 forward Adam Bratis. Bra- tis averaged 19 points and 11 re- bounds as a junior. The bad news for West Chester Christian is that four starters gradu- ated. The good news is that coach Bill Muller is bringing in four sopho- mores that romped to a 17-0 junior- varsity record last year. Muller thinks the newcomers are better as sophomores than his graduated se- niors. It should be a competitive year in Chester County basketball. With the possible exception of Coatesville, there are no dominating teams. What there are are plenty of small, quick squads eager to prove that basketball belongs not only l! the big guys. | Girls’ basketball West Chester Christian School coach Matt Pollock is optimistic about the new season, but he defi- nitely does not want to see his girls pick up where they left off last sea- son. The Conquerors won their first 14 games in a row, and then dropped four of their last six to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Christian Athletic Conference. West Chester Christian’s offense will be paced this year by team captain Ginny Speaker, a 5-9 senior forward, one of two returning starters. The other returnee will be Julie Weldon, a 5-4 sophomore point guard. “Ginny Speaker is a good shooter and she will be our key scorer this year,” said Pollock. “Julie Weldon’s strengths are her defense and her ball-handling.” Other starters for the Conquerors this season will be: Jenine Faith, a 5- 4 junior guard; Deana DiSipio, a 5-11 sophomore center; and Kim Allen, a 5-9 sophomore forward. The West Chester Christian girls' basketball team dosed out its regular season yesterday with a 27-22 win over visiting Fairwinds Christian. Donna DiSipio led the Conquerors with 11 points and 12 rebounds as Kim Allen netted nine points and came down with 11 rebounds. The Conquerors finish at 7-9 on the year. Earlier in the season West Chester had lost to Fairwinds tat -this time out the Conquerors defense was able to shut down Mariene Herron. Her- ron had 18 against the Conquerors in the earlier meeting. Yesterday she could get only five. Teammate 1 Tammy Britton led with 11 points. J West Chester Christian won its first 14 games last season before an injury sidelined its top scorer, for- ward Joanna Pollock. The Conquer- ors ended the season at 16-4 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic Coast Chris- tian Conference. Pollock will not be back this year. Replacing the three-year team MVP is the major task facing second-year coach Matt Pollock, who also must replace point-guard Debbie Murray and forward Missy Jenkins. Sophomore Julie Weldon, who started at off-guard last season, will switch to point guard. The-other re- turning starter is senior captain Gin- ny Speaker, who will alternate be- tween guard and forward. “We’ll be a lot smaller this year and will have to scrap from the bot- tom up,” Pollock said. That's our weakness, but we’ll be a lot quicker, and that’s our strength. Pollock plans to go at the opposi- tion with a man-to-man defense, hop- ing to keep the ball from reaching bigger opponents in the forecourt. “We’ll try to win games with de- fense, and we're counting on our guards being able to apply good pres- sure,” Pollock said. Forward Kim Allen, a sophomore who was the club’s sixth player a year ago, will start this season, as will sophomore center Deana DiSipio (5-10), the tallest player on the team. Junior guard Jenine Faith and sen- ior guard Beth Burke will see a lot of playing time. Also available at guard are sophomore Jennifer Berardi and i freshman Tricia Shank. Mrs. Shank brought In some ol her lovely crafts to sell at Marathon Day This year our annual marathon was highly successful, despite heavy rain that kept everyone inside all day. That same rain, however, led to a marked increase in food sales! This year we raised over $6,000, our highest total ever, for use in the athletic program, the library, the vocational program, and purchasing science and physical education equipment. We'll never forget the memorable parent-teacher volleyball game that the teachers had to really fight to win. Meanwhile, the cheerleaders squished into the hallway between the locker rooms, but they still had fun. We will never forget the student win over the teachers in the foul-shooting contest, or the mental pictures of the Griffith family giving pony rides in the downpour. Don't forget our hot-shot shooting contest winners, Greg and Kevin Zern! Surely no one in the high school will forget the fun of our half- day off for a gym day, due to reaching our goal.
