Arson was suspected in a fire that did an estimated $200,000 damage early this morning to the Bible Baptist Church and School, 1237 Paoli pike. West Goshen, ac- cording to police and fire officials. West Goshen police said the church had apparently been broken into and burglar- ized prior to the fire's outbreak. The inci- dent was under investigation by the state police fire marshal. West Goshen police and the Goshen Fire Co., which was called to the 6 30 a m blaze, said police. The church's minister, the Rev. Allen Griffith, said this morning that the 340- student church school was called off, at least for today. Police said firemen sent to investigate reports of smoke at the church found an office window air conditioner pushed in, the office ransacked and a safe opened. “The fire was definitely set, a police spokesman said. The fire itself was confined to a down- stairs office of the large brick church, said Goshen fire chief George Herzog, but much of the building sustained extensive heat and smoke damage. Herzog said the fire call came in at 6:26 a m. About 35 volunteer firemen respond- ed, he said. No injuries were reported. Herzog said at 8:30 a m. that arson in- vestigators were combing through the burned office and taking pictures of the scene. Police reportedly had no suspect in the case. Griffith declined to speculate on a mo- tive or suspect in the burglary or fire. He said the church operates a school for kindergarten through 12th grades. The school was established in 1972, Griffith said. About 600 persons attend the church, be said. According to the pastor, cleanup and re- pairs would begin today with the aim of putting the school back in business as soon Is possible. He said students were notified tujtajr borne today through an already- establisned telephone chain. We at West Chester Christian School have been blessed in all these areas by a lady who is not just a teacher, but also a friend, and by one who is always willing to give help and Christian encouragement to her students. She shows how much she cares through her continual sacrifice; her dedication to the school is exemplified in her willingness to teach almost any class that needs to be taught, as well as work with the students in after-school activities. We would like to dedicate the 1981 Conqueror to a lady who has been giving of herself from the beginning of West Chester Christian School, Mrs. Ann Murry.
