IN DEDICATION Upon arriving at West Charlotte in the fall of 1966, we as sophomores were met by a new principal, a new counselor, and a new class advisor. These three persons have followed us through our years at West Charlotte, and they have made it possible for us to make strides and improvements in our class and school. They have become dear friends whom we admire and respect. In sincere gratitude for their loyalty, subtle tack, and perceptive understanding; the senior class, therefore, dedicates the 1969 LION to Dr. Spencer E. Durante, Mrs. Marjorie R. Belton, and Mrs. Mary L. Hughes. Dr. Durante shared the experience of novice at West Charlotte with us for he had just become principal of the school. You might say that at the moment our class was introduced to him, we knew that we were to be “his class.” With a stem look that has won warm spots in our hearts, he has taught us the meaning of thoroughness and excellence. Dr. Durante, we say thank you. Mrs. Belton also came to West Charlotte with us. With her warm smile and jovial manner, she expressed her concern for our well-being. Many days seniors have beaten a path to her office to receive her warmth and understanding. We shared our many problems with her because we felt that she “really” understood. To Mrs. Belton, we say thank you. Mrs. Hughes must have been alarmed when she learned that she was to be our advisor or “mother.” With our wild ideas and high aspirations for change, the class found her a diligent and patient worker, we made many suggestions that were seriously considered and frequently implemented. She closely supervised us while we changed the design of our class ring and invitation. She also helped us to plan our special activities. None of us will forget her hard work and dedication with the prom and other activities. To Mrs. Hughes, we say thank you. Dr. Spencer E. Durante Principal 2
