These three persons have followed us through our years at West Charlotte, and they have made it possible for us to make strides and improvements in our class and school. They have become dear friends whom we admire and respect. In sincere gratitude for their loyalty, subtle tack, and perceptive understanding; the senior class, therefore, dedicates the 1969 LION to Dr. Spencer E. Durante, Mrs. Marjorie R. Belton, and Mrs. Mary L. Hughes. Dr. Durante shared the experience of novice at West Charlotte with us for he had just become principal of the school. You might say that at the moment our class was introduced to him, we knew that we were to be “his class.” With a stem look that has won warm spots in our hearts, he has taught us the meaning of thoroughness and excellence. Dr. Durante, we say thank you. Mrs. Belton also came to West Charlotte with us. With her warm smile and jovial manner, she expressed her concern for our well-being. Many days seniors have beaten a path to her office to receive her warmth and understanding. We shared our many problems with her because we felt that she “really” understood. To Mrs. Belton, we say thank you. Mrs. Hughes must have been alarmed when she learned that she was to be our advisor or “mother.” With our wild ideas and high aspirations for change, the class found her a diligent and patient worker, we made many suggestions that were seriously considered and frequently implemented. She closely supervised us while we changed the design of our class ring and invitation. She also helped us to plan our special activities. None of us will forget her hard work and dedication with the prom and other activities. To Mrs. Hughes, we say thank you. Dr. Spencer E. Durante Principal 2 3 Mrs. Mary L. There is much more, however. Our years at West Charlotte have been filled with joys, sorrows, pride, strife, friends, hopes, goals, and many experiences. When applied to the fullest, the human body can be exercised to do many things that may seem almost impossible. Physical Education helps to strengthen the body for the many pains that life brings. . . like school itself! Miss M.A. Blake Physical Education 23 APPLIED ARTS Home Economics classes in both foods and clothing are held daily at West Charlotte. Students in foods assist with preparation of foods for special activities. Students in cloth¬ ing classes make their own garments and proudly show them off in an annual fashion show. Included in the Applied Arts Department is driving. Actual on-the-road driving is under¬ taken only after a student has passed succesfully the pre¬ scribed theory course. West Charlotte has changed from a small, two-story building to a huge ten building plant. Thousands and thousands of people proudly call West Charlotte their alma mater, and each of these people knows what WEST CHARLOTTE IS. In W.C.’s many years of existence, the buildings have changed, the faculty has changed, the faces have changed, but it still is and always will be the same place of many happy memories for many people. We have merely attempted to preserve these memories for our class in this book. Every member of the senior class has had a hand in the production of the THE LION. We have received a multitude of suggestions from individuals. We have had our problems, too, for naturally so many different people could not always see eye to eye. But there has always been the reliable advice and the cooperation of considerate teachers and students. Approximately 450 of us will venture out from West Charlotte in June. Some of us will settle down to jobs, while many of us will continue in college, and still others will serve our country in the service, but there will always exist with us the unity and the spirit of ’69. We will carry with us the proud personalities that West Charlotte has helped to mold. We will always retain the memories of warm friendships, of advice, of jiving around, and of being together. We may forget names and times and details, but we will never forget what WEST CHARLOTTE IS. 199 • Winston-Salem HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY • North Carolina CHARLES L HUNTS . WINSTON-SALEM. N C
