THE LION 1963 8 Buildings 51 Teachers 1209 Students and still growing Published by The Journalism Department WEST CHARLOTTE HIGH SCHOOL West Charlotte had its beginnings in 1938 MR. CLINTON L. BLAKE Principal 1938 to present On September 6, 1938 West Charlott opened its doors to 39S students. The fi composed of fourteen members under the c ship of Clinton L. Blake as pi feature of the new school, in addition to its :quipment, was its location, 1415 Beatties Ford Road, address was then outside the city limits and back ' the highway thereby ridding students and teachers of c noises and annoyances. The West Charlotte of 1938. The 1939 Faculty. West Charlotte as it looked in 1950. Twelve years later . . . new buildings, new faces, new hopes and aspirations 1949 Auditorium Exterior. During the schoolyear of 1950, a classroom annex, a gym- nasium and an auditorium were added to the campus. That year the enrollment rocketed to 1100 as the curriculum included grades 7-12. 1950-51 Faculty 1949 Auditorium Interior West Charlotte 1954. A new and lonely lobby 1954. A dramatic beginning, steady growth, continued success . . . the school now lives Then a dream became a reality! The new senior high school was built and in September 1954, Mr. Blake, thirty-one teachers and 800 students heralded the opening of the NEW WEST CHARLOTTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. We left the cherished halls at 1415 Beatties Ford Road and moved to our present address. . .2219 Senior Drive. An EXTRA -A Student Center. The New Kitchen of the Cafeteria. Dedicated to the cause of education Views of the new gymnasium . In 1955, one year after the Rebirth of West Charlotte High School, three additional buildings were erected. . . the gymnasium, the mathematics building and the in- dustrial arts building. Looking north a view ofthe mathematics building, the industrial arts building, the administration building and the vocational arts building . ' 1 The school population continued to grow and another building was added. To date the school is composed of eight buildings and an athletic field situated on fifty acres of ground. Future plans call for a music building, an auditorium, another classroom building and a field house. The first Student Council was organized in 1946. Bryant George ' 46 was the first president. Last May they were hosts to the state convention. Mr. Bellinger and Mr. Wiggins are advisers to the group. Clubs are an integral part of school life TheY-Teens are an affiliate of the YWCA and are very active at school and in the community. Miss Fitts is adviser to the group. The New Homemakers of America prepare themselves for a niche in tomorrow ' s world of pleasant and comfortable living. The Red Cross attempts to bridge the gap between the privileged and the underprivileg ed . . . b r i n g s the overseas students closer to us through gift boxes and exchange letters. Organizations develop beginnings of mature and professional attitudes There were always pleasant moments when thoughts became too melancholy. We lost ourselves in our club activities. Each day was filled with little things . . . Teamwork, cooperation and a spirit of adventure helped us to inform the student body. The foreign languages offered include French I, II, III, and IV. . .Spanish I, II, III. Three teachers handle these classes. Here the drills, conversations and grammar essentials of the languages This was a typewriting class in 1941. A complete upsurge has taken place. From a handful of students in the library to a department that boasts of three fully equipped classrooms. . .eighty typewriters, adding machines, mimeograph machines, duplicator, copy machines and three teachers of business education. we have grown in many ways! To the curriculum have been added Shorthand I and II, Bookkeeping, Business Math, Typewriting II, General Business, and Office Practice. COSMETOLOGY. . .added to the curriculum in 1954.
