BRIDGFGRD Professor R. O. Bridgford joined the staff of the West Central School and Ex- periment Station in August, 1918 as Station Agronomist. Since that time he has taught classes in crops, soils and plant diseases in addition to being in charge of all research work at the West Central Station dealing with these projects. As an excellent teacher, he has been well liked by his associates and students. His acting as toastmaster for student banquets has become a tradition at West Central, and as a crops judging coach he has made an enviable record, his teams having placed at or very near the top every year in the Crops Judging Contest of the Red River Valley Winter Shows. Off the West Central campus, he is best known for the large research program which he has conducted in a painstaking manner. His plots have always been in good order. The seventeen different experimental projects he has worked with in crops and soils have always been a credit to the University. Professor Bridgford has been very much in demand by farmers and seed producers of the area for his help in pure seed stock distribution. His help has been sought out in establishing the recommended varieties of crops for planting. The dollars and cents value to agriculture from this program has been tremendous indeed, through the years that Professor Bridgford has been a co- worker in this program. Professor Bridgford has judged grain crops at the state fair for many years and has also been very popular at the many county fairs which he has served. A graduate of Purdue University, he obtained his Masters' degree from the Uni- versity of Minnesota. The annual Station Day has been one of Professor Bridgford's most popular contacts with farmers and seed producers of the area. He has organized the program each year to show the varieties of grains and seeds under test and to display the crops, soils and weed research work that is in progress. Another day of education planned by Mr. Bridgford is the Hybrid Corn and Soybean Day. This day is scheduled at maturity time for these crops so that the public can review the progress made by the different varieties as they stand in the fields. Professor Bridgford has remained active up to the date of his retirement. His good humor and efficient work will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends at West Central and throughout the University. P. S. JQRDAN In the summer of 1915 Professor P. S. Jordan joined the staff of the West Central School and Experiment Station as an in- structor in animal husbandry. During these forty-one years as head of the Animal Husbandry Department of the station he has conducted many experiments in the feeding, breeding and management of livestock that have been beneficial to Minnesota farmers. Thirty-two years ago he started lamb feeding experiments at Morris and has conducted one or more of these trials each year since. The fifty-first trial is being conducted at the present time. The annual Lamb Feeders' Day program associated with these trials attracts lamb feeders from many states. Professor Jordan has taken an active part in the work of the Federal Swine Laboratory ever since it was organized. Professor Jordan has received renown for several phases of livestock work, and among them is the excellent dairy herd that has been developed under his leadership. As a public speaker and as a judge of livestock, Professor Jordan has been in demand at meetings of various livestock groups and at county fairs and other com- petitive showings. Alumni and former students remember the various courses taken under Professor Jordan. He taught with enthusiasm the practical phases of livestock problems, and a sizeable list of successful livestock producers in this area have taken instruction under Professor Jordan. Because of ill health the past two years, Professor Jordan has given up his class room teaching, but has continued his supervision of the work with livestock being conducted at the station. As often as he has been able, he has been in his office giving advice to the capable men working with him concerning ways to improve the station flocks and herds. His fine contributions toward the im- provement of livestock in Minnesota is recognized nationally. To his projects he has given unstintingly of his time and energy and from their success he has gained his greatest joy. We Dedicate . . .
