,V'- ' CO-EDITORS Sandy Potratz, Brenda Hurd FOREWORD Let us take you on a picture tour of the West Central Community Schools. The new district, now composed of the West Central High School, and the Maynard, Randalia, and Westgate Grade Schools, represents a forward step in education. We have endeavored to show the people, activities, and a few of the many accomplishments of the past year. It is the hope of the Blue Shadows Staff that in the years to come a glance at these pages will recall the many happy hours of work and play of our school days. BOARD of EDUCATION Wm. A. Tock. . .Superintendent Harry Arthur. . Paul Harrison . . . . Treasurer Emilie Bencke . . . . Secretary Lyle Lamphier . .... Director Edwin Decker. . James Hamilton .... Director John Ingels . . . SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE SUPERINTENDENT WILLIAM A. TOCK This has indeed been a most interesting christening year for the West Cen- tral Community School District. The academic endeavors have taken on new and added significance, the vocal and instrumental productions were outstanding, the athletic competition was keener, the dramatic productions developed some fine performers, and the work of school organizations was enhanced by wider participation. These gains are the beginning fruits of a school district of increased size. The larger district most certainly contributed much toward giving our children and young people a better education, but at the same time created some problems. These are problems of transportation, extra curricular activities, breaking old traditions, and other problems that can only be solved by time and labor. We will look to the future for improvement of the curricular offering, improved health and physical educaton programs and the installation of a fun- ctional guidance program. MRS. EMIUE BENCKE Secretary to Mr. Tock Secretary of the Board MISS MARGARET WHITNEY Assistant to Mrs. Bencke MR. MARK RISINGER Elementary Supervisor The greatest undeveloped territory in the world lies under your hat. WEST CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL AND MAYNARD GRADE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The first year of existence for the West Cen- tral High School was one of accomplishment. The reorganization of Maynard, Randalia, and Westgate provided many students with opportunities to study in new subject areas. A new world of acquaintances were available for the two hundred'plus students of West Central High. Improved music instruction was available this year, as both instrumental and vocal music had instructors who could specialize in their own music areas and were not called upon to teach additional classes. As a result of the increased efficiency resulting from reorganization, subject mat- ter teachers this year were not called upon to teach in four of five subject areas. MR. MELVIN KUPFERSCHMID The West Central High School was proud of Ronald Brockman and Donald Fish for winning cer- tificates of merit on the National Merit Scholar- ship Test last fall. Only seven thousand such sen- iors were awarded in the United States and pos- sessions. Athletics enjoyed a successful year as thp West Central girls won the state basketball cham- pionship and were semi-finalists in the summer and fall state softball tournaments. The boys won the Fayette County baseball league and were runners- up in Upper Iowa Conference Basketball. Floyd Buhr in wrestling and Jim Arthur in track were parti- cipants in Iowa State Tournaments this year. After having a year to reflect upon the 1957-58 school year and hav- ing an opportunity to iron out some of the difficulties that reorganization posed, we at West Central are eagerly looking forward to further improve- ments and accomplishments in the future.
