Phantoms haunt the night The Great Pumpkin really exists! He presented himself to the students of West at a Halloween dance on October 29. The cafetorium was trans- formed into a pumpkin patch, where masquerad- ing students, along with Charlie Brown and other Peanut's characters, awaited the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. Costumes ranged from carrots and dice to con- victs and clowns. Cider, doughnuts, and cookies were served to hungry hobos and other famished masqueraders. Those who felt they wanted to work for their refreshments took part in the apple-dunking or marshmallow-chew booths. The senior class hopes that this will be the be- ginning ofa new tradition at West. but they said Come as you are! Masqueraders await the Great Pumpkin. Would you believe. . .? Upperclassmen go all out to make CC Week a smashing success. Don't anybody move! Crush Cougar Week arouses spirit at West Crush Cougar Week was a new tradition instituted at West. The purpose of this event was to instill spirit in the student body in preparation for the Big Game, the game with Catholic Central. The entire week was filled with activities. Tues- day was designated as an ofticial Senior Dress-Up Day. One of the largest demonstrations ever held took place on Thursday. A caravan was formed of one hundred or more gaily decorated cars driven by upperclassmen. Leading the way was our assistant principal, Mr. Jack Morton, followed by a black hearse carrying the cougar casket. Freshmen and sophomores were given the honor of watching the cavalcade from the sidelines. Cougar week reached its peak at CI cheering pep rally which concluded with an effigy hanging followed by a dance. Saturday, the final day of the week, ended most fittingly with the students participating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Greater love than this no team has

4 - '- l Friars Overcome An enthusiastic crowd was on hand to witness the first great upset in the history of the Priest- Faculty games. Lots of practice and hard work formed a winning combination for the Friars as they downed the faculty, 61-40. The faces of the faculty expressed bewilderment as during the plays, the ball was continuously snatched away from them by their overpowering opponents. Several attempts to rally were made by the de- fending champs but without success. Miss Pavlinek and Miss Wilder led the faculty supporters in cheers, while the Friar's fans were directed by gaudily dressed senior boys. The dance in the cafetorium which followed gave the finish- ing touch to an exciting evening. Mr. Schmiedicke attempts to snare a rebound.
