Art classes encourage creativity Words alone are not always sufficient for man to express himself. He seeks to cultivate new forms of creativity. The students of West Catholic's art department are striving to master these new channels of communication. Throughout the school year, with the aid of visual aids, the students are slowly instilled with the knowledge that for centuries has been a guide line of man's appreciation of beauty and design. Students are introduced to the appreciation of art and are also given a look to the practical side. Arts and crafts consist of everything from mak- ing candles to the actual finishing of furniture. Art students learn creative expression of ideas. Mechanical drawing teaches the fundamentals of design. Arts and crafts students learn the importance of precision in their work 27

Social Studies enrich knowledge of world events ln order for every student to take his proper place in American society, he must endeavor to become an in- formed citizen. The students at West are taking the initial step toward this goal. Geography, world history, American history, and sociology are courses which otter to the students the op- portunities to discover what has taken place in the world about them. lt is through these subiects that students become informed citizens of our country.
