Religion is not taught to be left behind in the classroom but it must be carried out to other classes and, most important, to the world. This year, for the first time, the weekly magazine Hi-Time was used by all grades. This comprehensive magazine not only contains facts on religious doctrines, but brings decisive religious happenings throughout the world to light. The students of West Catholic's art department are striving to master these new channels of communication. Throughout the school year, with the aid of visual aids, the students are slowly instilled with the knowledge that for centuries has been a guide line of man's appreciation of beauty and design. Students are introduced to the appreciation of art and are also given a look to the practical side. Arts and crafts consist of everything from mak- ing candles to the actual finishing of furniture. Art students learn creative expression of ideas. Mechanical drawing teaches the fundamentals of design. Wonderland by Night climaxes Homecoming Homecoming 1966 had a spectacular beginning as queen Deenie, perched atop her float, en- chanted all the spectators at Houseman Field. With the victory over Union, 20-12, the spirits were high for the following night. Finally the long awaited night arrived and as the couples passed under the Flower-bedecked arbor, they entered into a star-studded Wonder- land by Night. They danced to the music of the Chaparalls, searched for their stars, and posed for pictures in the romantic garden setting. As the hour of l2 came upon them and the couples had departed the night was tar from for- gotten because of the happy memories formed. The Chaparalls set the tempo for the Queen's Dance. The cast was directed by Miss Pavlinek. The song Consider Yourself at West set the tempo for the program. The ioy of the song was then carried into a dance by the senior girls de- picting the happiness with which a freshman enters West. A short skit followed bringing to the stage for the first time the faculty. The skit ended with a GENEROUS senior showing his brotherly love for the GREEN freshman. The two squads of cheerleaders brought the assembly to a rousing finale by cheering West on to victory. Upperclassmen go all out to make CC Week a smashing success. Don't anybody move! Crush Cougar Week arouses spirit at West Crush Cougar Week was a new tradition instituted at West. The purpose of this event was to instill spirit in the student body in preparation for the Big Game, the game with Catholic Central. The entire week was filled with activities. Tues- day was designated as an ofticial Senior Dress-Up Day. One of the largest demonstrations ever held took place on Thursday. A caravan was formed of one hundred or more gaily decorated cars driven by upperclassmen. Leading the way was our assistant principal, Mr. Jack Morton, followed by a black hearse carrying the cougar casket. Freshmen and sophomores were given the honor of watching the cavalcade from the sidelines. Cougar week reached its peak at CI cheering pep rally which concluded with an effigy hanging followed by a dance. Saturday, the final day of the week, ended most fittingly with the students participating in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Greater love than this no team has Phantoms haunt the night The Great Pumpkin really exists! He presented himself to the students of West at a Halloween dance on October 29. The cafetorium was trans- formed into a pumpkin patch, where masquerad- ing students, along with Charlie Brown and other Peanut's characters, awaited the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. Costumes ranged from carrots and dice to con- victs and clowns. Cider, doughnuts, and cookies were served to hungry hobos and other famished masqueraders. Those who felt they wanted to work for their refreshments took part in the apple-dunking or marshmallow-chew booths. The senior class hopes that this will be the be- ginning ofa new tradition at West. but they said Come as you are! Masqueraders await the Great Pumpkin. Would you believe. . .? Formal dances g highlight second semester If you peeked through the keyhole of the cate- torium on the evening ot February 4, you saw a magnificent array of cupids, keys and hearts that enhanced the annual Here's My Heart dance. The keyhole of a gigantic heart formed the en- trance through which elegantly dressed couples passed. Couples swirled to the music of the Chaparalls and enioyed an assortment of refreshments. As the climax of the evening ap- proached, the music quieted and Linda Wysocki and Ken Saukas were crowned Sweetheart and Don Juan of the class of '67. A south Pacific breeze whispered through a grass hut and tropical palm trees to set the mood for Bali Hai, the iunior-senior prom which was held on April 22 at Aquinas Wege Center. King, Richard Margelis, and his queen, Judy Phillips, reigned over the festivities. The memories will be cherished forever by the upperclassmen. Hootenanny '67 provides an evening of fun For the third successive year the gym rang with the clapping and singing of another hoote- nanny on April 15. The performance was high- lighted by the return of some of the old favorites and the introduction of many new performers. The air was electrified by the enthusiasm of the audience as they ioined the performers in singing Rock My Soul and Tom Dooley. Terrific seems like the only word that could adequately describe an evening chuck full of fun. Sister Mary Claude has directed these 180 students onto success in the Christ- mas program and the spring concert. The Halleluiah Chorus culminated the Christmas program which exhibited the combined talents of the chorus and band. The spring concert consisted of several selections ranging from en- ioyable numbers such as, Had a lot o' help from the Lord and Fifty Nifty United States to more soul stirring arrangements as the chantey, Shenandoah and the Texan cowboy song, The Lone Prairie. Library Club works behind the scenes The Library Club, under the capable direction of Sister Mary Julian, has done much during the past year to improve the facilities and services of our library. Because of the large number of active members, the club was split into two smaller groups - the Junior-Senior Club and the Freshmen-Sophomore Club called the Bookies . This has made the preparing of work schedules and the holding of meetings much easier. Besides typing, filing, arranging books, and decorating bulletin boards, the Library Club members used their study periods to check out books and aid students in the selec- tion of reading material. Another proiect of the Library Club was the highly successful Book Fair that was held in January. Sister M. Julian and Mary Meistas check out books for Jane Kempker, Tom Szotko, and Chris Ambrose. Curious students gain insight into French culture Aside from the fact that membership in a club appeals strongly to most adolescents, there are cogent reasons for the existence of a French Club at West. The club enlivened the study of French for the students through many enioyable features of language study. These features in- cluded songs, games, slides ond plays. The club enacted favorites as Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, Au Cafe, and Guignol et Ses Amis. Under the guidance of Sister Marie Delourdes, the club met once a month and the meetings were conducted in French. Each meeting ended with a social of about ten minutes during which time the students were urged to speak in French. The club is divided into five Legions, each presided by two Senators. The activities of the different Legions are then co- ordinated by the consul. The plebians make up the body of each Legion and are served by the slaves who are candidates for admittance. Students advance from one level to another by earning points for various activities such as plays, reports, and proiects concerned with Roman life. l l Isn't he cool? exclaims Joe Schmitt. pf- if ,, W gr WWW hx 'w m9,,s?5w7?2ffmLsM22wlm13. . Y -seam-Wm x A promising Future lies ahead The goal of the Future Teachers Association is to give its members a more comprehensive insight into the teaching profession - its pros and cons, and the various fields that are open to a young person entering the occupation. This year, under the guidance of Miss Johnson and Mr. Stewart, the members have probed into the above and have gained practical experience by acting as teacher aids and by attending institutes such as the one given at Aquinas College. To provide practical experience as a secretary, Sister M. Lea has organized the future Secretaries Club. The services rendered the faculty members have been numerous- They range from the typing of tests to other supplementary materials needed for classroom use. One club which has had a strong existence at West for several years is the Future Nurses. Experience in nursing and its diFFerent fields is the most important aim ofthe club. Through the aid of their adviser, Sister M. Victor Rose, they managed to obtain over three hundred dollars for the Mus- cular Dystrophy Fund. They also added to the Christmas spirit by caroling to the children at St. Mary's Hospital. With this spirit of self-sacrifice the teaching, secre- tarial, and nursing professions will gain much in the future. Photography and science intrigue students A few Physics students have shown their interest in working proiects unable to be undertaken during class time, through the Physics Club. This year the Club, under the guidance of Sister Thomas Rose, has delved into a relatively new field-the science of subatomic particles. The members of the Camera Club have truly given their time and energy to the service of our school. All of the pictures for our newspaper and some of the pic- tures in our WEST yearbook were taken by these devoted photographers. They not only took the pictures, but developed them in our dark room, at West. They also spent sometime in the study of methods to keep improving their skill. Sister Marie DeLourdes, their adviser, can iustly be proud of them. Safety Council promotes school welfare This year, with the efforts of Mr. Spenski, the Safety Council has renewed its goal of keeping our community, as well as our school, safe. A great deal of time was spent in planning and carrying on the car check in our school parking lot. Each car was checked 'For such standard de- vices as turn signals, horn, and brake lights. The members also directed traH'ic after school to alleviate the congestion of incoming and outgoing cars and buses. These members could be spotted by their safety badges which gave them authority to take away I.D. cards whenever they saw students running in halls, using the courts in inclement weather, or doing anything that might be accident prone. Under the direction of Mr. Pettyplace, the Ski Club has tackled the slopes ot many Northern Michigan resorts. While some members show top ranking performance others iust plod along, but all enioy themselves in Michigan's Winter Wonderland. The Girls Tennis Club, not wanting to be outdone by any other club, swelled its membership, too. Judging by the enthusiasm and work put into this club, it is bound to have a successful season. Another girls sport club has been introduced to West this year. The Girls Volleyball Club, under the leadership of Miss Wilder, has defeated many teams of other schools. Our girls, not wishing to limit themselves to only a couple of sports, have formed the Girls Athletic Association through which many new sports will be taken up. During the following week, the tension became high at both schools in anticipation of the big game. The Falcons had to settle with a 13-13 tie with their little brothers from across town. The Falcons showed great determination in the first half against Central, but the championship team over- powered the iniury--ridden Falcons, 32-13. Although the spirited West Catholic team outran and surpassed the Creston team, they could not take advantage of their breaks and bowed 19-7. Ottawa continued its domination over the west- siders by beating them 18-13 in a close game. The Falcons did their part in making the Homecoming a success by defeating Union 20-12. South completely dominated W.C. in their 34-7 victory over the dis- heartened Falcons. Showing new life and spirit, the Falcons whipped Muskegon Catholics, 33-14. Fine team spirit proved to be part of the West Catholic Harriers shine in regionals The hard work and effort of all members of the Cross Country Squad, combined with their precise team- work again reaped many benefits. As in the previous years, they continued to better their team reputation. Seemingly sparked by the hard running of Jim Bancuk, Bill Pelak and Jim Rittenhouse the team completely shattered last year's achievements. By finishing fourth in the overall city meet would have been enough to prove this, but their fine showing in the Regional Run which netted them a tenth place out of twenty-three teams competing, surely sets a high goal for next year's team. The team owes much of its success to Mr. Leonard Skrycki who has molded them into what may be termed a precision machine. Without his ability and know-how, such a year would not have been possible. O Falcons triumph as District Champions By pounding Union 64-44 in a non-league opener and up- setting Catholic Central early in the season, the Falcons began to look forward to great things. Although the Falcons were tipped, only by slight margins, in the next nine games they knew they were better than the record they had compiled. Catholic Central again gave the Falcons a chance to prove this as they went down in defeat a second time 7'l-68 and handed the Falcons another victory. The remainder of the season proved disastrous as the Green and White was defeated by Creston and Ottawa. ln the tournament play-offs the Falcons began to roll once again. By striking hard and fast their first opponent, Traverse City, was eliminated with a 64-62 victory. The next game with Union would decide who would become district champions. Al- though the Red Hawks fought galantly, the Falcons again emerged as victors and annihilated Union 5l-44. lt was all over before anyone realized that the youngest team in the league was now District Champions. The traditional Falcon drive and spirit were prevalent through- out the entire season. We here at West would like to extend our congratulations to Mr. Wagner and his District Champions. Coach Wagner hails his Falcons. I N i w S 4 5 3 th reglonol vlctory If they really wont to win they would put me in, says George bitterly. Reserve and freshman teams show potential The 1966-67 season was encouraging to Mr. Slowinski and his Junior Varsity basketball team. The reserves had to overcome from the start of the season the handicaplof having lost three players to the varsity. The outlook was bright after winning the first game ofthe season, 40-37 over Union. They managed to win three more games against Muskegon Catholic 74-59, Union 57-39, and Central 62-48. Bob Petronis provided the scoring for the sophs averaging l7.5 points a game. lnstead of being discouraged during a losing season, the team never lost its spirit. With the experience gained and the hustle and determination Mr. Slowinski instilled in them, these boys should be of great help to the varsity in the coming years. The Freshman Falcons had a heartbreaking season. Coached by Mr. Champion, the 'frosh finished with a deceiving 3-7 record. After two opening losses, the Little Falcons were determined to gain a victory. They played a strong game against Ottawa only to lose by one point. With each game the Freshmen gained con- fidence and valuable experience. As the season went on Coach Champion and his players were sure the elusive first win was within reach. Following another one point loss to Central, the Freshmen put forth a tremendous effort to win their first game, 24-22 over Union, and conquered Ottawa 32-29, and Central 59-48. Pat Fischer led the team in scoring while Rich Zambon and Rick De Vries led in rebounds. Last year the Falcons won the first city title for any varsity sport at West with a 39V2-V2 record. For the second year in a row the team finished second in the regionals to again win a trip to the state tournament where the boys finished in the top ten. Coach Al Slowinski is optimistic this year with the return of three lettermen, Chuck Rapolevich, Frank Kotarski and Tom Hardy. Kotarski, Hardy, and Rapolevich should be tops in the city. S. 97 West is best Throughout the year, West's cheerleaders have been one of the biggest sources of encouragement and support for all of the teams. This is due in large measure to the leadership of their director, Miss Wilder. These vivacious girls, of the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads, not only cheered for the team but won for them- selves and for West the honor of first place in the annual Godwin cheerleading clinic. The Freshman squad took second place. With this record, the students of WEST can well be proud of our girls in green and white. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS-FRONT: Pat Chilton, Kathy Sielawa. There are many privileges suddenly available and as the Class of '68 donned their class rings and title of upperclassmen, they proved more than willing to acccpt their role in building West. The Juniors enthusiastically dug into the work on Homecoming, Here's My Heart, and Prom as well as their own Christmas party and class play. With this kind of enthusiasm, their senior year is bound to be a success.
