History of the Class of 1951 ln a very short time, we the Class of '51, will leave our Alma Mater, to face the intricate social, economic. and political problems of the world. Four long years ago we were granted the privilege of high school life. Our sudden aware- ness of responsibility was tinged with dread of the future. ' During our freshman year we were ambitious - overly so. Although we were carrying a heavy scholastic burden, many of us went out for various social and athletic organizations. In our sophomore year we realized from experience that we would have to be very studious. It wasn't very easy, but everyone made the grade, and we became juniors. We expected our junior year to be a thrill as it was. We were constantly engrossed in various interests. In December we received our class rings just in time for Christmas. This was the highlight of the first semester. Almost immediately we were selling advertisements for the Class of '50's yearbook. Soon after this we prepared for our first prom. We deco-rated the gym as a rose garden. At the prom the first King and Queen of West Carthage, Bruce Dona- ghy and Shirley Winters, were crowned. They had been chosen by popular vote. Then came our big year. We were seniors. How we lorded it over our underclassmen! However, our egotism was soon forgotten as we started classes. We worked hard to be sure of graduation. We forgot the tedious grind of school work as we danced in a forest glade to the music of Wescott's band at our Senior Ball. We had worked for weeks planning and ar- ranging the sylvan scenery. r Another great event in our extra-curricular lives was the presentation of the Class Play on November 17. It was called The Chance of a Lifetime and was directed by Mrs. Stiles. The Class of '51 certainly had its share of social life. Nor were we deficient in athletic and sch-olastic stars. The honor roll always had names from the Class of '5l. Roger C-ook was the mainstay of the Quiz Team for two champion- ship years. Bruce Donaghy and Kenny Elliott are to be credited for many of the points scored by the basketball team. Dennis Wood pitched our baseball team to many victories. while Herb Freeman starred in the field and at bat. Bill Hemings and his trumpet were the pride of the band while several other seniors were in both band and chorus. Now we are rapidly approaching the end of our high school careers. There remain only a few short weeks, and we shall leave West Carthage High forever. However. before we leave our Alma Mater we sh-ould like to stop to thank those who have made our graduation possible - our parents and the members of the faculty. They have been patient and encouraging. Our final message is to the school itself, to the halls, and the classr'ooms where we studied. Farewell, West Carthage High, we shall remember you.
