Volume ll of the Hk'tlllll7lL'l'U. It contains a pictorial record of the classmates who shared our high school days. In it the reader will find the contagious humor of the freshmen. always carefree, mingled with the deep sorrow of the seniors who are leaving the halls of West Carthage High forever. We hope we have succeeded in conveying to the reader the various emo- tions which we felt while participating i11 the important activities of our class. What senior will ever forget the thrill we experienced when we presented our Senior play? We shall all remember the almost paternal pride with which we regarded the school newspaper and our own yearbook. These extra-curricular activities brightened our school life, but we seniors never lost our dignity. No doubt, in the future, we shall be overcome by nos-talgia Wllell we read this. At present, we are only happy and proud to have completed successfully our high school career. Slflitv - -- Page ,5'c'UcuIcc1z History of the Class of 1951 ln a very short time, we the Class of '51, will leave our Alma Mater, to face the intricate social, economic. and political problems of the world. Four long years ago we were granted the privilege of high school life. Our sudden aware- ness of responsibility was tinged with dread of the future. ' During our freshman year we were ambitious - overly so. Although we were carrying a heavy scholastic burden, many of us went out for various social and athletic organizations. In our sophomore year we realized from experience that we would have to be very studious. It wasn't very easy, but everyone made the grade, and we became juniors. We expected our junior year to be a thrill as it was. We were constantly engrossed in various interests. In December we received our class rings just in time for Christmas. This was the highlight of the first semester. Almost immediately we were selling advertisements for the Class of '50's yearbook. Soon after this we prepared for our first prom. We deco-rated the gym as a rose garden. At the prom the first King and Queen of West Carthage, Bruce Dona- ghy and Shirley Winters, were crowned. They had been chosen by popular vote. Then came our big year. We were seniors. How we lorded it over our underclassmen! However, our egotism was soon forgotten as we started classes. We worked hard to be sure of graduation. We forgot the tedious grind of school work as we danced in a forest glade to the music of Wescott's band at our Senior Ball. We had worked for weeks planning and ar- ranging the sylvan scenery. r Another great event in our extra-curricular lives was the presentation of the Class Play on November 17. It was called The Chance of a Lifetime and was directed by Mrs. Stiles. The Class of '51 certainly had its share of social life. Nor were we deficient in athletic and sch-olastic stars. The honor roll always had names from the Class of '5l. Roger C-ook was the mainstay of the Quiz Team for two champion- ship years. Bruce Donaghy and Kenny Elliott are to be credited for many of the points scored by the basketball team. Dennis Wood pitched our baseball team to many victories. while Herb Freeman starred in the field and at bat. Bill Hemings and his trumpet were the pride of the band while several other seniors were in both band and chorus. Now we are rapidly approaching the end of our high school careers. There remain only a few short weeks, and we shall leave West Carthage High forever. However. before we leave our Alma Mater we sh-ould like to stop to thank those who have made our graduation possible - our parents and the members of the faculty. They have been patient and encouraging. Our final message is to the school itself, to the halls, and the classr'ooms where we studied. Farewell, West Carthage High, we shall remember you. Could you possibly be llerb Free- man, an old classmate of mine of the class of '51 of West Carthage lligh School? My name is Freeman. You say that you were a classmate of mine. l.et me think. Why, you must be Shirley Winters. You are married, I suppose. After completing a course in elementary work at Oswego State 'lleachers' College, I came here to teach. l met my husband at one of our conferences. Ile is an engineer at the Rock- efeller Foundation. Have you seen any other members of our class lately? A few weeks ago l met joe Luczycki. Ile is a fortune teller. He has a large studio in Atlan- tic City. He told me that Sally Tyner had married Chick and they are living on a turkey farm outside of Carthage. Ruth Dionne Elllfl her husband, Dave, are living in their new home on the Carthage-Deferiet road. Peg Myers and Ray are happily married and raising a fine family. Juanita Guyette, West Carthage High School's former majorette and cheerleader, married Rux Plott and they live in Watertown. 'llhose girls had their diamond rings during their senior year. We knew they would marry. Delana Bell is running her own accounting Hrrn here in New York. Her cousin, Bill Hem- ings, is a very successful engineer. He was graduated from Clarkson. Betty Prievo, Mar- lene Peck, and Sally Bushey are working with the State Department in Washington, D. C. VVhat's Dennis Wood doing now? Dennis is living in Florida teaching science and in his spare time coaches his baseball team. Did many of the boys go into the service? 'llhe majority of them did. 'llhey are all back in civilian life again. lien Elliott is still a Don juan with all his women. Roger Cook, now a great scientist, has recently discovered a new route to the moon. Don Hunkins, having traveled over Cook's route, has established an agri- cultural school up there. Bill Steele, a senator from New York, was on the floor during the winter Filibustering for farm improvement, while in the House. Don Hunkins testified con- cerning the restricted use of fertilizer before the Farm Activities Committee. Bill Steele owns a large farm near Black River, 'llhe other day I read in the paper that Lfldine Smith, a noted psychologist, is going to de- liver at Columbia a series of lectures on TEEN-AGE ISEHAYIDR. Also that Dr. Dan Gladle is giving a series of lectures at the Medical Center on his most outstanding cases. llis nurse, Bessie Stiner, assists in several demonstrations of operating technique. 'llhe guest speaker on the program is Eunice Merkley, head supervisor of the Roosevelt hospital. Do you know anything about Bruce Donaghy, our junior Prom King After serving in the Navy, he finished his engineering course. He is now head engineer on the St. Lawrence Seaway project. On the side he has been coaching an all-girls' basketball team to victory this last winter. Juanita Guyette Plott was high scorer and Eunice Merkley was captain. l saw them in the finals in Madison Square Garden. What became of Dick Russell? Page Thirty-two Shirley ' Herb: Shirley' llerh : Shirley ' Herb : Shirley ' llerb 3 Shirley ' Dick studied engineering at Clarkson and did so well that the Navy offered him an important engineering job as well as the commission of Lieutenant Commander. A week ago the Queen Margaret arrived from Egypt and docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. On board was a pla- toon of Waves under the command of Captain Patty Pfatt. Lieutenant Commander Russell reported that the crossing was uneventful. Did you read the article by Jacqueline Bintz, a teacher of Home liconomics? She, as presi- dent of the UTU, stated in a press conference yesterday that the aims of the United Teachers' Union were higher wages, longer vacations and shorter teaching hours. She was strongly backed by Barbara Wilton, First grade teacher, and Carol Rowley, a music teacher. lt is a wonder that the article didn't mention Eileen O'Connor, our gal Irish, who is an art teacher. Bill Hofer, a well known artist in his field. has been photographing some beautiful paintings done by Eileen. Did you know that Noreen Wilton was here in New York work- ing as a private secretary? She recently married her wealthy employer. Jane Peck became so famous for her designs in dressmaking that a French designer adopted some of them. Two years ago jane married the Frenchman in Paris. Rumor has it that she is divorcing him and will return to the States to marry her former sweetheart. john Moseley worked himself up to Admiral in the Navy and, hy the way. has a girl in every port. Carol Rowley and jean Sheldon are soloists at the Cotton Club, while jim johnson's spark- Img piano act is one you cannot afford to miss. 'He is hailed as one of the great jazz pianists of the day. 'I wonder if y-our husband and you would join me at the Cotton Club tonight. We should be glad to do so. Good! Since we have had such an interesting visit, there isn't any use in trying to talk busi- ness. I shall try my salesmanship next door. At nine o'clock then. Good-bye. Good-bye until nine.
