Pats win title This year, the Patriot basketball team won the State 3A Basketball Championship. The Pats won 25 of 30 games, culminating with a 66-59 victory over Statesville. Led by seniors David Yancey, Mark Mansfield, Kelly Willis, Tim Williams, Kevin Jones, Gary McKeel, Vernon Patrick, and Brian Roberts, as well as juniors Sammy Gibson fstarting centerl, Win Neagle, Rodney Chambers and Patrick Fleming, the Patriots marched to an impressive 18-4 regular season record, losing only to ranked teams. The red and white lost to West Craven in the conference tournament, but rebounded to upend C.B. Aycock, Havelock and West Craven in the district tournament to earn a spot in the eastern regionals in Wilson. In Wilson, West overcame a gusty Burlington Cummings team to win 71-67 and then outmuscled a tall Warren County team. ln the title game the Pats took Statesville by storm, playing three quarters of the best high school basketball many fans will ever witness. In the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds made a charge, but the Pats regained composure in time to get the win, giving Coach Widgeon and West Carteret their first team state championship, in any sport.
