His years at West have filled the athletic programs and the classroom- with pride, ability, and caring. His j.V. football squad of '65 earned the number one position in the N.E.A.C. He followed these boys to varsity age and traveled with them to the state playoffs of '68 in Roxboro. His wrestlers have compiled an amazing string of 41 Wins against no defeats. But this man also teaches a full load of classes and therefore touches innumerable students daily. He cares for these students as he does for his athletic team members. It is for this quality of caring that we the Proclamation staff, do proudly dedicate this 1973 Proclamation to MR. A ' 'B ,, 'S AR TIMES GONE BY - Rod McKuen Remember how we spent the nighttime counting out the stars. Too late for the beach, too early for the bars. All of us together would raise our glasses high And drink a toast to times gone by. The times, oh we had some times When the world was the color of neon signs. Each of us and all of us killed our dreams with rye And tried to crowd a lifetime into times gone by. Remember how the Sunday morning bells were always ringing And out along the waterfront we'd hear the big men singing. In some long-forgotten time, some August or july, Even then weld talk about the times gone by. The times, oh we had some times When love cost only nickels and dimes. Always when our secret needs were hard to satisfy We'd talk of going back again to times gone by. Remember how we talked and laughed and cried into the dawning And the terrible taste of kisses in the morning. Crowed rooms and lonesome tunes and very little sky. Even then the better times were times gone by. The times, you know we had some times With gentle women and vintage wines. But that was when we didn't know our youth was passing by. Now all we have to think about are times gone by. VERMICELLI FAMILY Faculryfll It was to be a meeting of all meetings, the Vermicelli Family must take drastic measures against the Costanello Family who have been making costly Bits on the Vermicello Family recently. The Family members retired to the Venicelli Estate to regroup and begin retaliations on the Costanello Family. Only certain members of the Press were allowed on the premises. Some of the pictures they took show members of the Family who have not been seen in public in some time due to recent contract signings and killings. The girls receive one vote per penny collected for the Heart Fund. Each girl selects an escort to run with her for King of Hearts. The girls were first presented to the student body in an assembly on February 2. For the next two weeks those twenty-eight girls and their escorts canvasscd from door-to-door, had innumerable bake sales, and sold balloons. On February 19 the student body heard the amazing amount that this year's hard-working candidates raised - 36,149.21 Miss Cindy Hamilton and Mr. Cecil Harvell were announced as the 1973 Queen and King of Hearts. All candidates and students at West should be praised for their contribution to the Heart Fund. It hadn't been an easy war, but the Costancllo Family had come out ahead. This was the senior members' night to receive their recognition for a job well done. It was a night that each family member would always remember. As they left those familiar halls, they realized that they must face new jobs and contracts, but not before they take a brief retirement As the senior members marched down the aisle together for the last time, they could all take pride in their victory over the Vermicelli Family. A place many of us doubted four years ago we would see. Four years seemed an eternity to us when we were freshmen, and seniors seemed so grown- up and important. But, here we are. I must confess, however, that even during practice for graduation, I failed to see us as the grown-up, important seniors of previous years. This is the last time we, the graduating class of 1975, can look together at the world. Each of us must look out into the world, and realize that we owe the world something. It is that same world that has nurtured our minds through school and other educational activities, and our souls through meditations of many kinds. To most of us, life is really just getting started. Some of us will really leave home for the first time, some of us will marry. Others will seek full-time employment, and some of us will start to raise families. There are new dreams and new hopes to chase, but also new fears to face. However, we can be assured that we will not have to face them completely alone. There are always our friends, teachers, and parents to rely on. But, we must also realize that time and tide wait for no man. Let us not waste the time we have, or even wish it away. Man is so careless with everything - whether material or spiritual. But, let us not be wasteful with our time. For it is time that is the essence of life. And life is too short and time too precious to waste. Therefore, let us, the graduates of the class of 1973, go out into the world making the most of the talents we have - in the time we have - making each day, each hour, each minute of life count. Let each of us reach out and grasp every minute of each day. Reach out for new adventures, seek new experiences, and make everything we do count for something. As we break into the outside world, let us remember that You can't discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a ride as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark. For though from out our bourne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Trying to put a yearbook together is a great task and to make one different is hell. It takes a lot of long hours and hard work and a great group of people who enjoy raising hell, which all of us do. We, the 1973 Proclamation Staff, have many to thank for making this book as good as it is. We would like to thank Mr. Charles McNeil of the State Port, Chief Herbert Fulcher of the Morehead City Police Force, Mr. Bob Nelson, and Mr. Rush Morgan for the use of their boats, Mr. Wayne Beasley for the use of his cars, the many members of the Vermicelli Family who let us photograph them, and most of all, we want to thank Mr. john Nelson and Miss Lib Linville who helped us in many ways. The battle is overg if it keeps on it is up to those of you still at West Carteret. But don't let the fight get out of these pages. Thank you for buying this account of the battle between the families. Hope you enjoy this yearbook as much as we did putting it together for you. john JOHN WHEELER - Editor-in-Chief KAREN POLLARD - Assistant Editor MARILYN WILLIS - Public Relations DELORES RUSSEL Business Manager ,IACKIE CORDOVA Asst Business Manager DONNA PADGETT Asst Business Manager GENERAL STAFF Doug Campen Debbie Dixon Dee ,Iaye Femia Sandy Garner Jeffery Herring Robin Huling julia Murphy Debra O'Nea1 Sue Shelton Beatrice Thomas janet Willis Mike Willis i' Q N. ,ng n .. un i 6 .f -W., ,,,- .S A - ., ' A x .
