Reflections • 1 “A generation goes, and a generation comes but the earth remains forever ... what has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done ... What is West Carrollton Senior High School? It is the people within. The 1983 Piratan is the latest chapter in our story, a story that continues to unfold and be told. This story reflects images of days done too soon and of a year just gone by ... No one word can fully explain or describe our school, the people within. A composition of words weave the fabric, paint our portrait, and tell the tale. Our story begins ... 1983 PIRATAN West Carrollton Senior High School Beginnings Experiences Challenges Commitments Realizations Preparations Participations Believing Sharing Giving Choosing Dreaming Questioning Exploring Interactions Fellowship Purpose Freedom Promises Doubt Criticism Competition Closeness Pressures Maturing Deliberating Creativity Human Drama 14 • That's Entertainment Court ’82 Introducing the 1982 Homecoming Court — Sophomores: Fred Harris, Dee Dee Gregory, Randy Ross; Juniors: Kathy Mahorney, Tim Clark, Mary Walker; Grand Marshal: Mr. David Glancy; Juniors: Jeff Michael, Becky Augusts-son, Pat Przyborowski; Sophomores: Sue Purnell, Tim Sizer, Diane Baer; Queen: Terri Right-myer; King: Scott Carmack; Seniors: Dave Sercu, Seth Morton, Mark O’Brien, Dana Owens, Dana Koopman, Kris Storms, Tammy Rightmyer, and Becky Clark. It was the team’s first year to win a league championship. The senior co-captains, Brian Bunn and Bart Nye, led their team to victory in the close race between Miamisburg and West Carrollton for the MML title. Coach Wendell Melton was also voted the MML Coach of the Year. This year was also a year for injuries for the Pirates; however, these unfortunate accidents neither hindered the Pirates’ spirits nor affected their determination to win. The reserve team finished their season of 10 wins, eight of which were shutouts, and six losses. The girls finished with a 2-10-3 record. The team defeated Fenwick and Springboro. They had a strong offensive game against Franklin and a strong defensive game against Alter on City League Night. The Pirates had only two returning let-termen, but were led by first team M.M.L. center Tom Weller, second team M.M.L. forward Chris Hollan, and Honorable Mention Rusty Melzoni. The highlights of the season were the two victories over Miamisburg, Mike Johnson's last second shot in overtime to give the Pirates a win over Bellbrook and Todd Haitz shooting in two free throws in the last four seconds of the Fairmont East game. The Varsity team ended the season with a 6-15 record and the Reserve team followed with an 8-12 record. The girls were certainly always “on the rebound”, winning only one game. The varsity, consisting of mostly sophomores, should have some good experience for the years to come. One of the major highlights was their transition into the Mid-Miami League Conference and the securing of the championship title. Another was Mike McManus's third place ranking in his weight class at District tournaments which led to his trip to State. The Pirate wrestlers had two goals which they aimed for throughout the season. The first goal was to win the league title and the second was to place 5th or higher in all tournaments in which they participated. The Pirates surpassed those goals and with the hard work of the Coaches Henderson and Poock they also placed first in the All-Area Wrestling Coaches Poll. Some of the highlights of the season included defeating last year’s Class A State Champions, Middletown Fenwick, and Coach Pack receiving the 100th victory of her career. One of the disappointing moments came late in the season as the Lady Pirates fell to defeat against the Carroll Patriots in the District tournament. Seniors who participated this year were Leslie Bauer, Miho Uchida, and Co-captains Jenny Davis and Kris Glass. The varsity highlight was beating Miamisburg, 9-8. Mike Johnson received MVP, Todd Marsh was awarded MIP, and Jim Worden was named Scholar Athlete. Todd Riley 138 • Exchange Students Mandy Kay Mandy Kay, all all-Australian girl, came to us from Tasmania, Australia. Mandy lives in a town called Hobart and felt the main difference between the students of West Carrollton and the students back home is that the kids of West Carrollton seem to be more affectionate toward one another.” Mandy didn’t experience any problems adapting to the American culture. While here, Mandy attended various sporting events and was a member of NHS. By the time Mandy reads this, she will be back in her home state, which according to Mandy, is the size of West Virginia. She probably will be found on the beach, the thing she missed most about home. During her stay in the USA, Mandy lived with the family of Sue and Neal Marsh. Mark Suonpaa Mark Suonpaa was this year’s Rotary exchange student from Salo, Finland. Mark decided to become an exchange student due to his father being one about 20 years ago. Mark became very involved in school-related activities. He played goalie in soccer, played trumpet in the band, was a member of NHS and Ski Club. When Mark returns to Finland, he’ll have two more years of school remaining. After school, Mark will serve in the Army for one year as part of Finland’s universal military services. Then he plans to go to college. While here, he lived with the Tom Walther family in West Carrollton. Miho Uchida Miho Uchida was a Rotary exchange student from Fukuoka, Japan. Even though Miho had four years of English in Japan, she found that it was difficult to read, write, and speak the language due to the accent. During her stay here, her life centered around participation in girls' athletics. She said she “like” West Carrollton. After Miho graduated from West Carrollton, she returned to Japan to finish her junior and senior years. Miho’s host parents were John and Anne Moran. Commenting on her visit here, Miho said it was “fun and good experience.” Always Remembered • 139 Barry Norris “He was an ambitious person and he didn't get distracted by things that other students do,” recalls Mr. Stooksberry, instructor of aircraft mechanics. Barry Norris, a member of the Senior Class of 1983, died on December 25 due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Barry attended the Montgomery County Joint Vocational School his junior and senior years. He was enrolled in the Aircraft Mechanics program. “He had his goals set to be an aircraft mechanic by the way he always worked so hard,” said Mr. Stooksberry. Barry is remembered as a quiet person, but even though he was quiet, he was never a loner. Mark Cahall I never saw Mark without a smile on his face.” This year, that familiar smile was absent throughout the halls. Mark Cahall, a member of the Senior Class of 1983, died on August 15. In 18 years, Mark had undergone 16 major and minor surgeries. At nine-years-old, Mark received both of his kidney transplants. In his sophomore and junior years, he worked as a maintenance helper at the high school. Ever since Mark was in elementary school, Mark was in special education classes; however, he was scheduled to take all regular classes in his senior year. Mark never let his handicap get in his way ... ever. 140 • Senior Index ABBOTT, LANA Student Council 3; Carrolltones 1; PJA 3; Vice-President of Administration; Office Aide 1, 2. The two varsity squads combined their talents as one squad and were nominated to compete for district champions. All squads won the spirit stick, which is awarded to the most spirited and enthusiastic squads throughout the week. The varsity soccer basketball and the junior varsity squads competed at the Springboro Invitational. Varsity took sixth place and junior varsity placed second. The advisors this year were Nancy Christiansen — Football Wrestling and Connie Henry — Soccer Basketball. Lift That Spirit Up • 177 178 • Band The Best It’s All For Dedication, patience, determination, spirit, commitment, time, love, pride, family, sweat, and pain. It takes all of these to make up this precision marching unit. The highlight of this year was at the Kings Island contest where the band made it to the finals and placed fourth overall in a very tough field. The band also did well at the Valley View contest and also at the Middletown contest. Between band camp and Senior Night there were many good and bad times, but in the end it proved to be All for the Best. Together • 179 1 — Field Commanders: P. Clay, S. Young. Row 1: E. McClure. C. The Car-rolltones hosted their 5th Annual Drill Team Invitational on March 5. This year the flags and rifles got a new advisor; as the year progressed, she was unable to fulfill the obligations. Even without an advisor, the flags continued to wave and the rifles continued to twirl and a successful season was had by both. Carrolltones • 181 1 — 1982-83 Flags and Rifles: Row 1: G. Holbrook, M. Instead of getting just the basic reading, writing, and arithmetic, students are also exposed to training in their specific field of study. The juniors and seniors at J.V.S. are taking that first step to get ahead in the world. At J.V.S. there are many dif- ferent courses to study. Students can choose from veterinary medicine to electronic engineering and from horticulture to drafting. They are in a different school, but they are still involved in extra-curricular activities like band, sports, and cheerleading. This is why we say they are, “Apart: but Still a Part.” A Part • 183 1 — East Bldg. Sr. — Row 1: Bill Cecil. Scott Cross. Hope Wilson. Jodi Sabins. Sue Burnett. Donna Roark. Frank Massie. But by whatever name you recall it, this yearbook is the traveler's way back through time, to a time when childhood fantasies turned to youthful dreams, back into the memory of what we were which brought us to who we are. Sometimes memories may become a little dusty, but yet, we all journey on the roads of our experiences, of our sensations, of our interactions to keep close to these days gone by, of days which once were, days when we all made our way together, each on separate paths, yet all in the same direction. Some tomorrow, in days yet to come, you may feel like reaching back for this yesterday which is only a memory away. And when you do, you will recall that there is a peace of mind in knowing that some things which once were will always be, that the more things change, the more they stay the same. If you feel that time come, to harken back down the road to where our lives will cross once more, make your way to your bookcase, find the gray book on the shelf, the yearbook with the graduate on the cover, the ’83 Piratan and let the memory live again.
