West Carrollton Senior High School Piratan • 1981 Setting Sail As the dawn breaks over the horizon with the sun decorating the day, we stand on the dock preparing to begin our journey. With boldness and courage as our companions and the wind as a friend at our backs, we board ship, chart our course, setting sail on our adventure across the high seas. Each of us in our own personal way will captain the quest sailing toward the sunset. Our mark will be realized by others; our growth will be felt by ourselves. Sometimes the waves are rough and rocky; other times the ocean is smooth tranquil and calm. Sometimes the way is touched with tears and tragedy; other times the way is filled with smiles and serenity. Always along the way, we are filled with dreams and promises, and shining moments are our destiny. The day will come when we'll reach our destination, we'll dock, leave the ship, and take one more look back. We'll kiss today goodbye, point ourselves toward tomorrow, and graduate to a beginning, a new odyssey, awaiting our new adventure. The day will arrive when we'll take to the ocean again, refreshed and renewed with a firm sense of courage and spirit, well hoist anchor and push off, parting company with the shore, and continue setting sail over again. Let us begin . . . This year's American Field Service exchange student was Ramona Joseph, Ramona was from Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, Ramona stayed with the Michele Hedrick and Libbie Burton families while visiting West Carrollton. Ramona enjoys collecting picture post cards, writing to her pen pals, and making crafts. She was a member of the American Field Service Club and helped on the Homecoming Committee. Ramona hopes to become an accountant when she returns to Sri Lanka. We will miss Ramona's pleasant personality and smile. Her friendship will greatly be missed. The most memorable event during my high school here was the Homecoming Parade. The Homecoming game was something new and exciting for me. This made me to get to know many friends. I had a nice time. -Ramona Joseph Exchange Students . . . 1981 Leonardo Trujillo was this year's Rotary Club exchange student at West Carrollton. Leo lived with the Mike Sibert family while he visited West Carrollton from Venezuela. Leo played soccer this year and sang with the Mixed Choir. Leo would like to return to the U.S. after visiting with his family in Venezuela to attend college. Leo has been an asset to W.C. and his charm and friendship will be missed. I would like to thank everyone, my friends and teachers for the patience and help they gave me. the Siberts for taking me into their home and treating me like one of their own sons. -Leonardo Trujillo Chelley Seibert Piratan's Most Outstanding Senior Girl for 1981 is Michelle Seibert. Since busing served no educational purpose, it was the primary item to be cut from the school program so that academic programs could be maintained. The black ribbons which were tied around the mirrors of the buses symbolized the end of high school busing. Autumn assemblies were full of sports enthusiasts who came to acknowledge and acclaim our football, volleyball, and soccer teams. Spirit was at its peak especially at our Homecoming assembly when the student body finally realized we possess an Electrified Pride . Other assemblies brought another tone. Discussions of school levy failures and the possible end to the open lunch policy were part of our more serious assemblies. Our overall spirit and an electrified pride helped us cling together, and although we faced various problems, we met them head-on and pulled through. The West Rides Our Way The country-western boom that was sweeping the country made its way to West Carrollton Senior High in the early 1980's. Seeing someone wearing a cowboy hat wasn't unusual. The cowboy hats came in all shapes, sizes, colors, and not one had the same feather on it. The cowboy boots became a popular accessory with the hats. Some boots even had spurs to go with them. This western boom brought country music back. West Carrollton brought all their cowboys together for a day by making a western day” part of spirit week. Pic. 1: Kevin Clay mad as a bull! Every student experiences some kind of close encounter whether it be talking to a friend or hanging around the lounge. Most encounters happen in the parking lot, during lunch time, between classes, and after school. Close encounters make up much of the fun time in school. They add a sort of pleasant relief to the sometimes drab and dull days. For some students (not many, of course), the close encounters experienced here are the main reason for attendance. As we all know, school can't always be fun and games. Perfected drills, well executed dancing, and exciting music make for attention-getting entertainment between halves of the game. In truth, the band is more than that. Sweat and hard work go into bringing about a good show. Many long hours are involved from band camp in August to three hour rehearsals in the evenings. There are many moments of madness, utter confusion, struggling to memorize music, rushing to meet reporting times, and just pure exhaustion. One thing makes it all worthwhile-the love of a family. For the band truly is a family. When the year is over, one thing no one can take away from any band member is the feeling of accomplishment when the band has done well, and the feeling of knowing that every member of the family has helped in bringing it about. Because of the loss of field hockey teams in the league, the MCC dropped field hockey as a league sport; thus, the girls could not receive any points in the MCC. The girls faced a tough schedule, playing teams such as Fairmont West, state champs, 1979, and Fairmont East, state champs, 1980. The girls continued to battle throughout the year, defeating Fairborn Baker and Vandalia-Butler in scrimmages and tying Northridge and Vandalia-Butler during the season. With this last page, a small part of each of us pulls into port and docks, while another larger part climbs aboard a new ship ready to set sail. We'll each captain our own ship, chart our own course, and sail off, searching for tomorrow. Sketched in the sails will be that tomorrow; mirrored reflections in the water will be these yesterdays ... childhood companions, treasured friends, and dreams somewhere over the rainbow. On this journey, the prayer for each captain will be for red sunsets at night, peaceful waves, and a gentle wind to carry us to far-away shores. Sometimes the sea will slow the ship; we'll lay anchor and float on the water in quiet solitude. Memories will once again crystallize to a time we loved, glistening through these pages. As the moon begins to climb in the sky, we'll set sail again to strive, to seek, to find, and never to waver until we've reached our destiny, realized our vision, and found that place for each of us, called home. Come, come sail away ... -Mr. McCollum 240
